I made an appointment on their website in advance and got my hair cut and dyed by Moses. You can text the number on their website if you have any questions, and they're super helpful and quick to respond! The color ended up turning out super similar to the picture I showed. Moses also warned me that red can fall out pretty quickly and would need to be touched up every few month - I already knew this from previous experience, but definitely great that he gave a heads up for people who might not know! Throughout the process, Moses explained how he was cutting my hair and took into account how I wanted a low maintenance haircut as well. Overall experience was also relatively quick - under 3 hours for cut and dye (although a part of my hair was already lightened from a previous dye so could take longer with fully virgin black hair). It was $220 total before tip ($160 for dye and $60 for cut - initial quoted price on their website starts from $120 for dye and $70 for cut), which is a pretty good price for a full dye and cut in NYC especially considering the length of my hair. Moses can speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and English! Definitely recommend coming here for all your haircut and dye needs :) read more

Sheraton used to have a bunch of random shops but they've renovated the whole place and currently Nova Salon seems to be the only occupant. It's located in the lower level of the hotel which only two elevators go down to. I spent about an hour here getting a wash and cut. They do recommend making appointments but it wasn't too busy when I visited as a walk in on a weekday afternoon. First they did a short consultation (I asked for 1-2 inches off and long layers with curtain bangs) then I got my hair washed. It was okay, the typical scrub and a bit of a massage. After rinsing the shampoo out, they just wrapped my hair into a bun and only put a small towel around just the bun instead of my whole head (which was a first) so I had to walk over to the salon chair with water literally dripping down my head. I was assigned to Sam during this visit since I was a walk in. He even asked if I wanted any water or drinks which was a nice gesture. His station was very clean and the brushes were also clean and free of other people's hair which was a good sign. During the cut, Sam was very meticulous with trimming my wet hair. Then he blow dried it and trimmed and thinned it some more. This is honestly when I should've stopped him because it was thinned way too much for my liking. I had been growing out my hair for over a year and it had a lot of volume and dimension. But my final haircut, there's too many layers and my ponytail is measly and thin. The curtain bangs were the only thing I sort of liked about the cut. I was shocked at how much of my hair I saw on the floor...I won't be cutting my hair again anytime soon as I have to let this cut grow out. Hopefully it grows out well. For new visitors, I'd recommend that you go in with a picture so at least you won't walk out with half your hair gone. They allow you to pay via credit (2.5% charge) and add tip that way so no need to bring cash if you don't have any. There seemed to a lot of people dyeing their hair so that might be this salon's specialty. read more
