The biggest difference this time around was staying with two friends instead of solo and for two nights instead of one. We booked a larger room with two queen beds and a fold-out couch which gave us plenty of space to spread out. The bathroom was also a nice size, making it pretty easy for three people to get ready without being too cramped. Oh, and the robes! So relaxing. One of my favorite things about Emeline continues to be the common spaces. The lobby is gorgeous, the outdoor terrace is a wonderful place to relax especially in the evenings, and I still love having Clerks Coffee Co. and Frannie & The Fox right on the property. This visit, we also took advantage of the complimentary bicycles, which were easy to reserve and a fun way to explore Charleston early in the morning. We also used the free drink coupon at a sister hotel/bar. The staff was friendly throughout our stay and everything was and welcoming. My only minor complaint was that the elevator seemed a little... temperamental... at times, but nothing that significantly impacted our stay. The only thing I'd encourage future guests to be aware of is the parking fee. It's pretty standard for downtown Charleston, but definitely worth factoring into your budget ahead of time. Between the beautiful boutique atmosphere, unbeatable location, thoughtful amenities, and inviting common spaces, Emeline is a fantastic place to stay in Charleston. I wouldn't hesitate to book here again on my next visit.

The Mills House may be a beautiful historic hotel, but its hospitality, particularly among its…read moresenior leadership, is an absolute disgrace. My husband and I chose this property for our wedding weekend, expecting a memorable and welcoming experience, only to have what should have been one of the happiest occasions of our lives overshadowed by the appalling attitudes and conduct of multiple employees and managers. I live with serious medical conditions that require access to a microwave to warm medical devices and certain medications throughout the night. Rather than approaching this as a legitimate disability-related accommodation request, staff repeatedly treated it as an ordinary amenity issue. At 2 a.m. on our first night, my husband approached the overnight front desk employee to explain my needs. When he returned specifically to THANK her for attempting to help us, she rolled her eyes and sarcastically emphasized the word "need." The wedding coordinator also seemed visibly irritated by our questions about our wedding arrangements, and several members of senior management demonstrated an equally disappointing lack of compassion. Most astonishingly, General Manager Mr. Linder suggested that we relocate to another hotel THE DAY BEFORE OUR WEDDING to accommodate my medical needs. That this was considered an appropriate response by the person responsible for running the property speaks volumes about the standard of hospitality demonstrated by its leadership. I do want to recognize two employees who genuinely made us feel cared for: Mr. Paulussen, who helped facilitate getting my medical needs met, and Duwight, who graciously helped us record our wedding-day first look. Their kindness and professionalism stood in stark contrast to the treatment we received from others. What makes this experience particularly infuriating is that every one of our needs was ultimately met. The problem was never the outcome. It was the appalling manner in which we were treated while trying to get there. Simple requests became exhausting ordeals involving dismissive attitudes, unnecessary resistance, repeated explanations, and escalation through multiple members of management. Instead of enjoying the day before our wedding, my husband spent precious hours advocating for medical accommodations that ultimately proved entirely achievable, while I dealt with the additional physical and emotional toll of the situation. Perhaps most telling is that General Manager Mr. Linder has yet to offer a sincere apology for the unnecessary stress and disruption his handling of the situation caused during our wedding weekend. When the person responsible for setting the standard of hospitality cannot even acknowledge how his decisions affected his guests, it's hardly surprising that other members of his team demonstrate a similar lack of empathy and accountability. Based on my experience, I would strongly caution anyone with an "invisible" disability or chronic medical condition against staying at The Mills House. You may ultimately receive everything you need, as we did, but you should not have to endure disrespect, feel belittled, or be made to feel like an inconvenience simply because your medical needs require some flexibility and understanding. Meeting a guest's needs after making them fight for basic consideration is not exceptional hospitality. It is a failure of hospitality. Beautiful surroundings cannot compensate for leadership that has seemingly forgotten that treating people with dignity, compassion, and respect is the very foundation of this industry. Our wedding weekend deserved far better, and so does every guest who chooses to stay here.

It's a matter of details. As soon as we opened the door the musty smell hits you like a surprise left hook. And the air, though cool, felt muggy, not dry, like you would expect (more on this below). The kitchen and living area were nice and well appointed. There was plenty of silverware and plates. And I appreciated the desk as I did have to do some work. The view and proximity to the beach was also very good. However, it was not all unicorns and rainbows. Note to Vacasa: spend a little extra and provide a couple of premium rolls of both paper towels and toilet paper. And maybe provide more than the free Samsung TV (streaming apps are available too) A little goes a long way when forming impressions. It just gave off a "we are cheap and we're not trying to hide it" vibe. Also, ever heard of a Kureig? They're pretty popular and would be a very welcomed addition. Moving on...the fan in the bathroom didn't work. One of the towel bars was not affixed and threatened to fall off the wall if you so much as looked at it wrong. We would have called maintenance, however the second day we were there, we requested a second remote because there was only one for the living room and bedroom TV. The front office said they would let maintenance know and we never heard back so we didn't even bother with the other things. Customer service needs some work. On our last day maintenance did call us to come look at possible water damage the owner had noticed BEFORE we arrived four days prior. The wall next to the door was warped and had definitely gotten wet and we suspect that was the reason the room felt muggy during our entire stay. And prepare to live out of your luggage. I felt safe as both a lone female traveler and one with the desire to not be around the crowds of big hotels during these challenging times in our nation. I could truly relax. I stayed in the Palmetto which was a very kind upgrade as I booked the Indigo. The Palmetto is spacious enough for a seating area and has a great view of back garden. There is the sound of road traffic early evening but thereafter it is very peaceful. The wi-fi was great, the room was clean, there is an iron with an ironing board, hair dryer, lots of closet space and breakfast was perfect. The pool deck was so hot several of us burnt our feet. Or give more options for shade than just the towel and TV area... why were the TVs covered??? The room was nice. The only issues we had was where the TV was mounted and the room darkening shade. IF you mount a TV on a wall parallel to the bed, at least use a mount that you can turn toward the bed. We stayed at the Ashley for two nights last weekend when we were visiting Charleston for a friend's…read morebirthday. I chose the hotel, because I wanted to stay somewhere with historic charm (I wanted to feel I was in Charleston)! It was an all right stay. T he building (a historic house) was beautiful - especially the porch, where you can sit and enjoy your coffee in the morning. Our room was nice (it had the wallpaper and wood features I really wanted), especially the bathroom. But the room had seen better days (peeling wallpaper), wasn't the most functional (no outlets near the bed for charging phones), and had a strange basement room (down the stairs was a basement room with a TV, bar, and couch - it was a little creepy, but more than that, I just didn't think it was safe to have those steps so close to the bathroom door - someone who'd had a few too many drinks might just fall right down those steps. The location was okay/pretty good - not really in the heart of things, it was about a 15 minute walk to King Street. This worked for us on Saturday, because it was a lovely day and we had a chance to see a bit of the city (the 15 minutes is a great walk past restaurants and shops), but the weather on Sunday made the distance not so great. And FYI - the walk to the Battery would probably be an hour, but you can obviously Lyft/Uber or pedicab. The location was great if you want a little separation from the more touristy parts of downtown or a quieter neighborhood, but we did Uber more than we normally would on a weekend trip. My biggest gripe is that the hotel is a no-staff or self-service hotel (there's no one to check you in and you are sent the information you need to get into your room ahead of time by text). I've stayed in no-staff/self-service hotels on two other occasions. Sometimes it works out fine, but it really turns a hotel into an airbnb. You can't leave luggage with the front desk if you're checking out hours before your flight nor are there the amenities you might expect at a hotel with front desk staff. I didn't realize from the description on hotels.com that The Ashley was a no-staff/self-service hotel, and I probably wouldn't have booked it if I had known (because we had a 6pm flight and ended up having to store our bags in our friends' hotel). The staff (not on site but available by text) were responsive and helpful, but I think I just prefer a standard hotel. Overall, our stay was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay again.
