I wrote about this park last year and feel it is time for a whole new review. In my ongoing quest to chronicle all the great playgrounds in my area, this is definitely one of mine - and my 2 kids' favorites.
Northwest Park is located off of Dee Road and Northwest Highway, and runs all the way up to Franklin School at the north end near Manor. This gives it a total of not 1, not 2, not 3 - but FOUR playgrounds! The first one is in the middle of the park, just after the baseball fields. It stands out with its very unusual design. Hands down, this is the most unique playground I've seen anywhere. It consists of many curved and circular elements and epitomizes creative design. (See photos)
It features a series of climbing hoops, a rope climbing pyramid, a web-like climbing grid, and a curvy and slender, tongue-like slide that has no sides! You straddle it all the way down. This playground can challenge much older kids, though my 22-month old Stunt Baby wishes he had longer legs and better coordination to tackle some of these obstacles. Its other central feature is a fire truck with an old, shiny metal slide on back. My son likes that a lot, but it seems kind of treacherous for small kids to be climbing.
The other 3 playgrounds along the perimeter near Franklin School are nice, but rather tame compared to the brand new one I just described. The "red playground" seems to be geared towards smaller kids. It has a rickety balance beam bridge, a tunnel, short bridge, multiple slides, and swings.
The "green playground" across the lot from the red one is our favorite. There is a climbing setup shaped like a curvy "M" that is pretty challenging for little kids. There's an oddly-shaped balance beam, bridges to run across, and a roller slide. This one is definitely for the bigger kids as one slide is pretty steep and tall.
The paved lot between the red and green playgrounds has lots of letters, numbers, shapes, hopscotch grids and other activities that will fascinate kids and leave them running in circles.
Finally, there's a small "blue" playground near the rear parking lot of Franklin School. It's tiny compared to the other 3, but yet another place to run around. It too is meant for bigger kids, as the slides and platforms are pretty high off the ground.
The park also has a grove of old oak trees with picnic benches in the shade, but the area tends to be muddy with packed dirt and sparse grass. I'd rather have a picnic elsewhere instead. There is no sandbox, but near the baseball field there is usually a large mound of sand and kids play on it while their big brothers or sisters are playing or practicing on the field.
Overall, a great place to spend an hour playing. read more
