So, my wife and I made the Journey to the top of Stafford Heights to check out this store. I have only ever been in a framing store once before to pick up something for my mother, it was clean and everything was set on the walls. There was an air of don't you dare touch to that one. At Frames on Farrant, there ace frames of all textures, shapes, age and sizes around the place, all in handy spots to get a closer and more personal inspection of what was in store. On the walls there were paintings, photographs, posters and memorabilia that were framed in classic and creative ways. We were impressed. When we handed over our wedding photo the staff member took the time to talk about our wedding and find out what type of couple we are and chose a few frame examples to pick from. After a while we settled on something that, for us at the time, was kind of left field but made our photo pop.

Latrobe Artspace has been in Paddington for as long as I can remember. They sell framed art and…read moreprints, however their specialty is framing services. I know a few people who have used them, and it's the personal service that keeps customers returning. Only small, independent stores really have the time or inclination to compare 50 types of matt board and discuss the benefits of frame thickness in exhausting detail. You may pay a bit for their services, but if something is worth doing it's usually worth doing properly. This little local business is definitely worth supporting.

And that must mean something. Honestly, I'm not really big on picture frames. I have a blind spot when it comes to home decorating. Picture frames and me only ever come into contact whenever strictly necessary, e.g. when I can't think of what to give someone as a present. I suppose this has happened often enough for me to recognize a good picture frame deal when I see one, though, and the frames in the front window of Latrobe Art Space are ridiculously cheap for their quality, particularly given the store's Paddington location. Obviously the best deals are in the front window. Inside you can buy much more extravagant and larger frames, mirrors and paintings for very high prices. I imagine most of the clientele here are part of Paddington's richer crowd, because some of the frames look like they could only bear to live in mansions. Speaking of mansions, I do feel a bit like there's a slightly haughty quality to this store. I always feel like the shop assistant is watching me like I'm going to steal something. (It almost makes me want to do it.) There's also something vaguely creepy about the place - probably the silence inside and being surrounded by heavy dark furniture, Gothic frames and so many mirrors. It makes for a slightly "I'm in the final confrontation scene in some b-grade thriller" vibe. However, Latrobe Art Space's peers must be considered. Having seen what picture frames cost at art stores in Westfield shopping centres across Brisbane, the prices are insane. Smaller home ware stores seem to be a Picture Frame Rip-off Extravaganza, too. In a nutshell, if I were in the market for a decent or high-quality mirror, I'd definitely go here based on the price alone.

My partner and I recently had some old posters framed at The Framer and they did a beautiful job on…read moreboth. One is a rare WWII propaganda poster that my boyfriend wanted to keep well protected. Choosing the cheapest frame (75x100mm), but with gallery quality glass and UV protection, it set us back around $400. For another, less precious, slightly smaller poster we had it done in the same frame without the special glass and it cost $220. The woman who works there was really lovely to deal with, had both jobs done on time and they look great. The Framer also doubles as a gallery and rumour has it there's a cafe coming soon too.

It's more than just picture frames, which, to be fair, wouldn't have interested me for 30 seconds let alone 30 minutes. I loved the recycled trestle table (amusingly called an iTable) on sale for $250...which was long, but just wide enough for an iPad and a printer. I also loved the cute, sketches on canvas by Cary Davies - all little family tableaux; the antique style mirrors; and most especially the paintings for sale by mainly local artists (keep your eye out for the Brisbane cityscapes done by Vanda Hudson). All of that to look at, and I still managed to get the lovely store owner, Kerry Hart, to give me the right directions, too.

Being a fan of art and illustration, I find framing stores really appealing. The sample board across the back of the store showcases a range of materials, cuts and colours for frames so you can mix and match with what you need. I also like the prints they have on display of different posters and artwork. It is a nice place to browse and to keep in mind for your next potential masterpiece.

Now I haven't exactly frequented many framing shops, but maybe that's just because most of them…read moredon't place themselves as strategically as this place - in a busy shopping centre with an open store for everyone walking past to be able to get a good look inside and see exactly what they do. While I may not be an expert, these guys sure are. Every inch of the shop is covered with framed pictures showcasing the work they do, while half of one wall has a closely packed display of all the different types of frames on offer here. When I visited there were two people working, which might seem like an extravagance for this type of shop, but I guess that indicates just how busy they are.

Most framing shops will have art or decorations on offer but Picture Framing @ Kenmore Plaza has such a unique and diverse selection. If only I had a few hundred dollars to spare I would certainly invest it in some art. There was a wonderful rendition of the Indooroopilly bridge, funky stylised graffiti-style ladies' faces, serene impressionistic landscapes and much much more. I happily spent my time browsing and the staff were happy to let me do so even though I could not afford anything on offer. I love a place that supports artists and local artists and Picture Framing @ Kenmore Plaza is one of these places.

I recently had my finished very large hand-stitched tapestry framed by Keynote. Steven was very…read moreknowledgeable with his recommendations for frames and mounts. I went with his suggestions which proved to be an excellent choice, including the use of non-reflective glass. I couldn't be happier with the end result and the price was very reasonable, given the size of the tapestry (1m x 70cm). The work was completed promptly. It now hangs in pride of place in the lounge room of our new home.

I went to Keynote framing with a precious family artwork that needed re-framing and I've got…read morenothing but praise for Steven and his work. He respected the work and in spite of being a cheaper option (making him less money) recommended keeping the old mount to maintain the integrity of the art work, repairing it for me instead. He gave me options with the frame but really talked to me about each suggestion to make sure I got a fabulous result. I went with a frame I would never have chosen and the result is far beyond my expectations. I would not hesitate to recommend Keynote to anyone needing framing and can honesty say I found the pricing really reasonable and having the man giving you the suggestions be the one doing the work means you can rely on it being done. Oh and be prepared for some fabulously interesting conversations if your up for it, Steven is fascinated by history, philosophy and the world.

Buying a voucher for a business from one of those deal-a-day sites always tends to be done with…read moretrepidation. There's always a chance it is going to be a less than glowing experience. Thankfully, this wasn't the case when I purchased a $49 (for $200 value) voucher for Art Land. I'd purchased a print on my travels and it just wasn't a size that lent itself to a buy-off-the-shelf frame. I'd gotten many quotes in the couple of hundreds so has expected that I may need to pay somewhat more than the voucher amount. I was never made feel less of a customer because of the voucher and the staff took me through multiple framing options. In the end I decided on a simple black frame and paid a little more. They gave me a date it would be ready (2 weeks lead time. I wasn't in a rush so it suited me fine) and to the day they called to say it was ready. It was such a seamless transaction and I'd go back for any framing needs I have in the future.

When my sister brought me back a beautiful batik of a woman serenading some cows from Sri Lanka I…read morewanted nothing more than to have it hanging on my wall. Something so beautiful (my description does not do it justice but have a look at the picture) deserved to be framed. Now I shopped around a little for quotes because picture framing is not cheap and I suspected framing a cloth batik would take quite a bit of time, skill, and money. Walking into Art Land in Indooropilly I was impressed by the classy furniture and decour available for sale and the staff were very attentive and said hello and that they would be with me soon despite being already with a customer. I did not have to wait long until one was free to help me. I went through the process of choosing a frame or two that I liked and the customer service girl even went and got the framer to give advice since what I wanted was a little out of the ordinary. I did not want to cover up my batik with glass, instead opting for getting it stretched on a board and framed. I wanted it to stay tactile in a way and they were happy to help me with this. IN the end I got a very reasonable quote and went ahead with the framing. It was ready to pick up in two weeks and I am very very happy with the result and the whole process at Art Land.

This unassuming little shop is tucked in next to Cleveland Library, not exactly at the trendy end…read moreof the strip, so quite easily missed. It's been in the same spot for as long as I can remember, so maybe 15 years or more, and has changed hands once in that time. I liked the old owner and now I like the new owner. I've had a few pieces framed there and like the advice I get on complementary colours and styles etc. The last job was a really strange shape, looong and narrow, but turned out beautifully. It's not cheap, but no good framing place is.
