I saw Dr. Hackett because I had a noise in my ear (not ringing) that corresponded to my pulse. It sounded like an engine roaring. This caused me to not hear as well out of my left ear. Dr. Hackett's office gave me a hearing test which showed that I had indeed lost hearing in my ear. No surprise there. Then Dr. Hackett looked in my ears, said everything looked good, and then casually said, "I think you might have a benign brain tumor called acoustic neuroma." Huh? When I asked what the treatment was for it, he said, (in a "well duh" tone of voice) "Uh, brain surgery." I asked if there was any other options and he said "No, we really need to get it out of there, because it will just grow and can cause mini-strokes." FUN! He then gave me the number of a neurosurgeon who would perform the surgery. I asked, "What if it's not a brain tumor?" and he said, "Then the noise in your ear is just something you'll have to live with the rest of your life." (Translation: He didn't have a freaking clue.) He said someone would call me later to set up an MRI. As soon as I got home, I started Googling "acoustic neuroma" and discovered a place called CyberKnife that can just zap tumors without shaving your head and cutting your skull; a lot less messy than brain surgery with virtually no recovery time. They take most insurances. I quickly decided that Dr. Hackett's referral to the neurosurgeon was trash. The MRI came back clear. No tumor. Whew! I have a plump, juicy, healthy brain. So I was back to square 1, minus the $40 co-pay I had to give Dr. Hackett's office since he was considered a "specialist." I would have made out better being examined by a monkey since a monkey wouldn't have charged me $40 and wouldn't have told me I had a brain tumor when I didn't. (Freaked me and the whole family out. That was a bad week to put it mildly.) The story does have a happy ending though. A few months later I went to a Chiropractor who said I had an artery out of place in my neck, which was causing me to hear my pulse. He popped my neck a couple times, and I immediately noticed a reduction in the noise and my hearing went from hearing static in my cell phone (in the bad ear) to being able to hear exactly what the person was saying and knowing who was speaking, but the volume was still lower in that ear. He said my hearing would slowly return to normal and a few months later it did. I just had a hearing test today as a requirement for a new job and passed with flying colors. Next time I am faced with going to Dr. Hackett or a monkey, I'm choosing the monkey. read more
