Wow where to start? Stayed at the men's residence upstairs for short stent. It was like animal House in there literally but no college. I remember waking up each morning and having to leave the room to use the bathroom early morning to try to get in there before others do. The stall doors were so short that anyone walking in could see the commode. That being said somebody would always clog the toilet and you would hear the noise knowing the water or the river was going to come downstream and you'd have to put your legs up or you would get wet. Some people would walk right in barefoot like it was a normal walk in the park nothing to see here. And then the mixed showering setup in the partying was way overboard. Many people had the jail mentality where they'd be showering and you'd come in there it's your towel and soap and they'd say oh there's more than enough room under one shower head. So some of us would go to the gym and then shower down there and frequenting many YMCA's this one is probably the most stuck up group of people that I've experienced. You're scared down there working out like everybody else on older machines by the way what business is it of theirs to ask what type of car you driving or how big is your house? Now they obviously knew that we were from the men's wing due to the residential cards that we had and free gym privileges. But some of the people that are stuck up tried to make people feel like they shouldn't be there. And people need to remember people stay at the y short-term or long-term for many different reasons from all walks of life The Good The bad and The ugly. And there might be the good in the bad in the men's wing but the only ugliness I seen was the comments from the people downstairs. If you can avoid this place like the plague. If not make sure to keep your feet up when the river comes running. read more

The worst YMCA in the local area, let me edit that. Things are still thrown out/stolen in fitplus. Also, apparently having a small child is a handicap now as there's parking spaces only people with small children can use. Really?? They're also perpetually empty and going to waste. Working out is suppose to uplift your day and make you feel good. I can count on this YMCA to almost always do the opposite. I've never had such a frustrating experience going to any gym. As soon as I'm able, I'm going to get a new gym membership elsewhere. The only reason I have any membership at this point is the sauna/steam room. I'm not sure why Middlesex county has such a weak selection of good gyms throughout the area. read more

I went to this Y as a teenager and went back as an adult when I moved back to the area. The prices are high but if you use the facilities it is worth it.It is an old school Y but is pretty good. This is a really good swimming gym and the pools are open almost all day with open swim when they aren't having classes with the plus of having a dry sauna in between the 2 pools. The weight room is good but crowded and they are missing some equipment like a glute machine or good machines to work your abs but overall a good gym with a good crowd. They have a lot of programs for kids and older folks which is nice. read more

Quite expensive even at the basic level, and it's annoying there is a premium price level even higher. Parking lot is pretty far from the gym entrance... I know that complaining about having to walk is silly for a gym, but if I wanted to walk outside in the winter, I wouldn't be going to the gym in the first place. Decent supply of cardio machines, and they don't seem to ever be too full. Bit of a maze to get around, since the entrance is on the first floor, the locker rooms are in the basement, the , and the workout room is back on the first floor. There is a full pool and basketball court, which are rare in some of the other gym chains (although I don't really use either.) Overall, it's a fine gym, but if there was a Planet Fitness in Middletown, I would go there instead and save $30 a month. read more

Let me start by saying I live in Middletown and I almost never go to this Y. First, the classes are not good, not great... just okay. I can only think of one instructor (Missy) who is worth going to classes for - otherwise its not worth my time. The music is always outdated in the classes, the instructors have to look at written notes (or manilla folders with notes? wtf!) and the pace is just ... not good. Second, the free weight and machine area is not well equipped. They have a decent selection of weight machines, if thats your thing. They have a handful of treadmills and elliptical... but hell any gym has treadmills and elliptical machines so that doesn't really mean much. I love to spin and for some reason (and unlike every single other Y in the region) they don't have any spin machines in their general exercise area ... like someone's going to steal it? who knows. They have a TRX system but I never see the straps around - I don't know if they are saving them for the pay classes. Third, they have a two level membership system which again... no other Y has and really just offends me deeply. For $30-ish more dollars a month you can go through a closer entrance (which I don't care about... I'm there to workout so having a closer entrance is pointless); towels and a jacuzzi. But Wheeler Y in Plainville has a jacuzzi, fully stocked TRX machine (and a sled!), sauna and a spa... and better classes. Hell the Y in Downtown Hartford is nicer than any professional gym and they give you towels, have a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and they don't charge you $30 extra for those things.. its just what you get for being a member. Whoever suggested a two level membership system at the Middletown Y needs to be fired - it is the stupidest idea and just makes them look greedy (and I've seen their jacuzzi, its not worth the money). Lastly, the place is old and its a maze. Yet its one of the most expensive Ys in the area which makes no sense. I just have my membership in Hartford and float to all of the Y's in the state (hell I can go to Y's all over the country when I travel). read more

I live two blocks from the Y, so it's a no-brainer for me to work out here. For those folks that say that any of the other gyms in Mtown are cheaper, I'll challenge that by saying a few things. 1. I don't have to drive to the gym; saving me time and money and 2. I will actually go because it's two blocks away! I have no opportunity to avoid it! 3.They have a wonderful schedule of classes, and 4. there are ALWAYS treadmills available. ALWAYS! Never have I been to a gym where I can use a treadmill whenever I want...when typically at other gyms there is most always a wait around that golden workout hour of 5:30pm and 7am. So for those of you who still drive to the gym (yes we live in America where this is reality) and are on the free weights waiting for a treadmill...think about the Y. *I don't have kids. *I've never used the pool. read more

A solid gym with an excellent sense of community. Weight lifting and cardio center is average but there is plenty of equipment. Spin classes are fun and unassuming. Basketball court is a little small but there are very good runs on Sunday mornings. Nothing about this gym in flashy but it is utilitarian and very friendly. read more

I love the YMCA. I don't know what i'd do if I wasn't able to go there and sit in the sauna late night and just relax. Everyone there is helpful and ready to assist you with what you need. read more

With 2 pools, racquet ball courts, a gymnasium, and a wellness center that has tons of fitness equipment, this is a great place to stay fit. They also have great swim lessons and family events. Members can also take advantage of the child watch or youth center, while you work out. read more

Our family absolutely loves the Y. We workout here (free child watch for the little ones during the week!), our kids take swim lessons here and now that they are older, they go to camp through the Y as well. No doubt that the Y is more expensive than Planet Fitness or WOW, but you get what you pay for - two pools, basketball court, racket ball courts, spinning, classes, the works! There are great family events on the weekend as well. read more

This is where I learned to swim (or rather, float) as a small kid. The pool was enormous and menacing and honestly it may have been the first one I ever got in. I remember the sights, sounds, and smells of the facility very fondly. If you live in Middletown and especially if you have a family this place is ideal in every way! read more
