What's not to love? Their coffee is the best. I got an iced vanilla latte (of course) and it was one of the best I've ever had. Perfectly crafted. Perfect ratios. The cinnamon twist was delicious and my brother got a breakfast sandwich -- I had to take a bite once I saw the beautiful melted cheese. It was FANTASTIC. The interior is the cutest. I love the booths, perfect for meeting a friend, and the bar area is just as perfect. This place keeps busy and you can see why.

A great cup of coffee. Hopefully you connect as well with the great people in this town too.

Food made with so much love. Be sure to try the protein bowls for an amazing treat. A great staff that will get to know you as you come back for so many amazing treats.

This is my kinda coffee shop. It only satisfies my craving for caffeine, but it also takes care of my cocktail cravings, too. When you enter, Northern Grounds, it appears to be your typical upscale coffee shop. You'll see barista's busy serving cups of coffee, latte's and baked good. To the left you'll have a small area of merchandise for retail sales. Then as you step deeper into the shop, you'll see the bar. It may not be a full-service bar, but what they offer is top quality. NG offers a large variety of wine, a good selection of local craft beers and an impressive collection of classic cocktails on tap. Cocktails on tap? Yep, and they are impressively good. The cocktails are made and kegged in house. We enjoyed two different cocktails on tap and both of them tasted as if they were hand made. The Juniper Martini and Orange Old Fashioned, both get a thumbs up from my group. The service was friendly and they offer free Wi-Fi. So I recommend you give them a try. Stop by and enjoy a cup of java or a refreshing adult beverage.

Great atmosphere! Coffee and Tea in the front, party in the back with tap beers and spirits. Complete with bakery items and sandwiches. The staff is very pleasant! This is a must stop!!

Northern Grounds is such a great coffeeshop. Located right in the heart of Ely, Northern Grounds is a perfect place to work, get catering, or have a wine tasting. Staff are friendly, wifi is strong, and the space is open and outdoor-themed. I most recently got catering from Northern Grounds for a few work events, and they did a wonderful jobs. I particularly love their sandwiches (both breakfast and lunch), cakes, and coffee drinks. Also - upstairs is a great co-working space called Society Hall Workspace. You get a lovely view of town and it's a great place to work for the day.

A super cute spot to have coffee or drinks at. We came in the evening during thanksgiving weekend and they had live music as well. We felt like we could hang out here forever with the music and the winter drink menu. The white winter was our favorite along with the massive beer and wine selections. Definitely recommend this adorable spot for any time of the day! Staff is super friendly too!

Delicious Dirty Chai Latte (score-they have Almond Milk!)

I only wish I lived closer! The almond milk dirty chai made my day after a week long, glorious, Boundary Waters adventure! The staff were awesome and even helped us covertly pay for and smuggle out a Unicorn Bar (trust me on THAT insane deliciousness!) to surprise the friend who offered to drive the 4 hours back to the airport for the group. Thank goodness we found this place to caffeinate up for that drive! Fabulous beverages & snacks all around!

Great coffee shop. Opens early! We stopped by and they were decently busy. The gal at the register let me try a sip of the light and medium roast. I went with the light roast after all. Seemed like the medium roast had a bit of a burned essence to it, which i dislike. They also have a dark roast, which i passed on. If you buy a large coffee, they let you have one free refill. There is a condiment station nearby, with everything you need. The bakery items looked delicious and fresh, so i opted for the white chocolate blueberry scone. It was very tasty. I'm not sure if they could warm it up if you asked? I perused the store a bit and saw they have a cooler and pantry area where you can pick up items and build your own charcuterie board. How fun! They also have a bar area, with beer and craft cocktails on tap! There were a ton of wine bottles decorating the store. Apparently they have flights and tastings etc. The back of the store has two unisex restrooms and a bulletin board with all the happenings of the town. There is a stairwell up to the second floor where you can sit quietly and work. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. They sell bags of their coffee - ethiopian, columbian and brazilian, in 4, 12 and 16 ounce bags. Unfortunately, these tend to sell, so they don't always have all three varieties in all the sizes. I opted for the brazilian 12, but i wanted a brazilian 4 and a columbian 4. oh well. Seating is pretty spread out. There are plenty of booths available. There are also a few tables up front by the window. Service is friendly and fast. I would recommend this cute coffee shop. i hear they have live music sometimes. parking is on the street.

Thanks to owners of both "A Stay Inn" and "Northern Grounds", Jasper Company treated my wife and I to a complimentary muffin and coffee. As you walk in your immediately welcomed with a rustic charm. The bar next to the coffee area is so elegant and love the addition of bar stools that have different backs on them. From homemade bread, honey, jams and jelly's to home made beers and cocktails, this place is exactly what screams Ely. The staff here are so pleasant and knew we were coming right from the Inn. It's a wonderful feeling to feel so welcomed back in the city. We love coming to Ely and can't say enough how we can't wait to come back. I hope anyone visiting the area will stop in and enjoy a hot fresh cup of coffee like my wife and I. Looking forward to our next visit! #schroyerfamilydaily #arrenschroyer #coffee #muffin #coffeeshop #cafe #local

Delicious coffee. Kind people. Tasty cookies. Beautiful decor. Oh! And an adorable beer and wine bar too! Cheers! I wish them many, many years of success. So happy to have an establishment like this in Ely.

Great little coffee shop with tons of delicious food items made in house as well as baked good from a bakery up the road. We had a really good pistachio muffin and I had one of their house coffees from the beans they've roasted. Plenty of seating, lots of snacks, and friendly staff. Also a full bar! Would have partaken if I didn't have to run marathon tomorrow but will stop back after!

Sadly, we weren't huge fans. I will say they did have a nice beer selection. We ordered a vegetable plate, veggies were old we also did not get very many. Pictures I've seen online made this place look wonderful, was a little disappointed.

I just love a shop that makes its iced-coffee ice out of coffee so the drink doesn't get watered down as it melts.

I recommend everything about the frisky otter, except perhaps the fish tacos…read more Which of the frisky otter because we were traveling with a dog to Ely and needed a place where they could join us for dinner. Frisky Outar allows dogs on the patio. We are a little bit worried about sitting outside because there was an air quality at work, but strangely in the Enclosed outdoor patio it was fine. The patio itself is adorable. Beautiful plants tasteful decor. We started the meal cocktails. They have a well curated selection of martinis. I sampled the cucumber lime one and it was divine. I don't typically drink martinis, but this tasted like summer with hints of lime and cucumber. I also tried the lemon drop martini, which I would be cautious about choosing. It's supposed to be a combination of three liquors, including lemon cello, but the lemon cello flavor was so dominant. I couldn't drink it. My friend and I both ordered the walleye fish tacos and point frankly were very disappointed. When they arrived, we practically had to dig into the tortilla shells to even see what fish there was. It looked like it was a chopped up leftovers from something else. Even worse, the fish was cold. We both sent ours back to Get warm fish. I think they might've just microwaved them or something, because what they brought back out was barely warm. But we just ate it anyways. Normally I would expect in a fish taco to have larger visible pieces of fish. These really just felt like leftovers from somewhere. We chose the sweet potato fries as our side, and they were excellent though. I am guessing they were pre made elsewhere and tossed in a fryer. There were many other interesting options on the menu, so I don't want to discount this restaurant. Give it a try, but just avoid the fish tacos. The servers were excellent. Very attentive, refilling our water responding to questions and also being gracious about us sending our tacos back. I should also mention they have a dog menu !! we ordered a side of chicken breast for our little goldendoodle and she absolutely loved it. There were multiple items to choose from. This really is the place in Ely for bringing your dog.

She asked us if we wanted to sit on the patio outside we said if there's availability for the patio, we would enjoy that. She gave us our menus seated us and said someone will be with you shortly While we were sitting there. One of the waiters took his time and cleaned off a table and provided the guest with their check. He continued to clean off tables and even as I raise my voice and said, could someone wait on us he immediately turned his back to us and walked as fast as he could in the other direction ! We had numerous employees walk past us, and even the manager or she could've been the owner walk past us numerous times 25 minutes later we still have not been greeted by a waiter or waitress. No one had brought us Water and no one has acknowledged us! My husband and I have been coming to the Ely area for over 45 years and we have seen restaurants come and go! I am going to predict that this restaurant is going to be one that is going to go in short order! maybe a better name for the restaurant instead of frisky otter is the lazy otter! One you have to offer something different unique that people don't usually get but in Ely, you can get a hamburger and fries at pretty much every restaurant in town! I was super disappointed after having to wait 25 minutes and realized I didn't wanna have to wait another 25 minutes for my meal to come and having to pay $20 for a hamburger! So we chose to get up and leave the restaurant not being acknowledged by anyone on our way out, but the owner or manager was hustling herself about to set up a table for a large group of people when she couldn't even take time to serve two people who had been waiting in her restaurant for over 25 minutes! Shame on you! Looks like the Dairy Queen is a better option at least when you go through their drive-through they acknowledge you immediately and their food cost about the same! If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would!

Serving food only at the garden which is great because its sunny. Found a bench we can seat on. GOT IGNORED multiple times and no signs for what to do when you want order. After 20 mins seating and looking like a thwat we manage to ask where can we order. She told us that they are not taking orders for the next 30 mins, then proceed to walk away no explanation after that. Sooooo rude!!!! Eventually we catch the attention of one of the young waitress, ordered drinks and she kindly explained why can't we order food. She said to wait for 15 mins then hand us the menu upon my colleague request. After waiting for 1hr and 30mins and finishing our drinks we decided to just leave. Felt ignore, discriminate at and very hungry. Within the times we were waiting new costumers coming in and staff are accomodating them, asking for their orders and bring out FOOD. We visit and eat here a lot before the pandemic start because of the scenery, food and staff accomodating dietary needs. This might be the very last day that i will take our person supported.
