We paid top dollar last Fall for Fall ball. The coach was suddenly unable to be at games, no other coaches from the organization stepped in, we barely played and if memory serves me, my son got two at bats. Parents were furious, but stayed with the organization thinking this was a one-time issue that the coach was unavailable. Fast forward to this summer. Our son was "invited" to spend approximately 40 days down south, $5k plus airfare and food, to play baseball for the majority of the summer. My son apparently had two tough games early on (this was supposed to be a learning experience!) and never played his position again. Pitched a few innings, as there were not enough pitchers, yet 21 players were brought! He got approximately five at bats the entire 40 days and benched most games. He was not the only one. In the ten years my son has played bb, I have never spoken to a coach or made a complaint until this summer with the Kings organization. They preach fairness and respect, and always tell the boys if they attend practice they will play, well no player worked out or practiced more than my son, so their claims are just not true. Besides these issues, the coach drove a van that did not have enough seats for each player, so kids had to take turns standing, the drives were long and this was a serious safety issue. With all the money each player had to pay, a safe form of transportation was the least of what should have been provided.

My three sons participated in their winter league when that was offered, and each enjoyed the experience. They also did the camps when they were little, and enjoyed themselves and learned some good drills that helped them improve.

While the camp does a good job of teaching - there were some issues. First issue was the fact that…read morethere is no running water to refill your bottles so dehydration is a possibility in the plus 90 degree heat of July. Second issue was that they only have porta potties - not ideal during a plus 90 degree day. And lastly - the older campers are very quick to bully the younger (weaker) kids. My son was threatened with violence because the campers were made to run cause he broke a batting tee during drills. The staff doesn't care about any of these issues - they have a "not my job" attitude that really turned me off. I think it's ironic that the same people that complain that kids aren't playing baseball anymore will break the spirit of those kids that DO want to play baseball.

I've played company softball on this field several times over the past few years. It used to be a…read morereally crappy field (read: torn up grass, weeds, divots, shoddy infield, pretty much dilapidated and forgotten-- conditions not conducive to a softball or baseball game) up until a couple years ago when it was totally renovated.* Now, it's totally, shall I, say beautiful? Well, if you like turf, it's quite nice. So, obviously it's a no cleats field. There is a really nice track that surrounds the one field as well. There are stands for observers, bathrooms (which is a HUGE plus for athletes. Trust me...when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. Also, the bathrooms are clean, AND they have soap and hand towels! I was amazed.**), and locker rooms, but those aren't open to the general public and are solely for students who go to MB high school. The field is impeccably maintained too. I saw one groundskeeper (no, it wasn't Willy) who actually raked the infield when we were finished with our game last night. I guess my only gripe is it'd be great if the infield was covered to protect it from rain. It was slightly muddy at home plate last night. Oh, and since it's almost directly under the Manhattan Bridge, it can get a little noisy, so you might have trouble hearing your infield. So, if you belong to a NYC softball league and are scheduled to play here, you're lucky, because it's one of the nicer turf fields in the city. *This could also be called "Verizon Field" if you want to be all corporate about it. I think they gave the high school money for remodeling. **Maybe if I knew you better I'd tell you of the bathroom horror stories at most softball fields...flies, no doors, port-o-potties, or no bathroom at all, which doesn't help if say, you've drunk too much Gatorade and can't stand and pee like a guy. Oh, I've said too much.
