This park is located on 155th St and Frederick Douglass Blvd. You can get there on the C line but when going East on 155th St you need to take stairs down to get to Frederick Douglass. I wanted to see what kind of pickup was going on but there was what looked like a HS summer league game. Not sure what league it was. Overall court looked good. I love that I've been here so many times and never really knew that it was a big deal. An old flame of mine used to host/attend/play in the tournaments held here. They were big events that would draw huge crowds and were generally preceeding infamous Harlem parties. Although it seems like yesterday, that was like eons ago. The middle school kids here can school me in b-ball. And they are all pretty ripped and cut. I love it when African American stereotypes are reinforced yet again. (i.e. All blacks are buff and are genetically inclined to excel in basketball and have a predisposition toward trash-talking. Oh, and they love to spend 85% of the time arguing a call and 15% of the time actually playing basketball. This clearly demonstrates the undeniable FACT that they are further genetically inclined to be highly volatile and disagreeable in temperament.) I kid, I kid.... I really don't believe that at all. One time me, Cosmo, Lomez, Corky Ramirez from up on 94th Street, and my cop buddy Doug were grabbing some food down on 1st and 1st (nexus of the universe) before our league game at Rucker. We were arguing whether Ray's pizza is Famous Ray's or just Original Ray's. I said it was Famous ORIGINAL Ray's but Lomez quickly corrected me and said it was just Original Ray's. The court is named after Holcombe Rucker, a local teacher and a playground director for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Rucker started a basketball tournament in 1950 in order to help less-fortunate kids stay off the streets and aim for college careers. This place is very legendary in the urban community. Rucker Park has been featured in lots of movies and television over the years. Such as:He got game, Above The Rim,Hallowed Ground. Uncle Drew, and even Marvel's Black Panther! Just to name a few. Peewee Kirkland was said to be one of the best basketball players to ever play the game. He came right out of Rucker Park! This place is respected all over New York and the world as being the go to spot for the most competitive and exciting places to enjoy the game of basketball. Also this park is located next to the old location of Polo grounds. Yes; where the New York Giants used to play!!! Talk about historical landmarks! WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?! This used to be the most anticipated Summer event site in NYC but now after a well publicized shooting and dwindling ad sponsors it has become a shell of it's former glory. I remember my first time here, barely able to fit in, having everyone scream or get amped up by the host running around with wireless microphones making fun of the players and or audience... Now, it has the feel of watching people in your local park play basketball with uniforms on. No big stars compete here for the most part anymore just locals trying to get a slick nickname... 55th exit, damn, already we home. This place isn't what it used to be. For the ballers, the times that I've come back to visit there haven't been enough good games to run in, but rather few people here and there shooting around or playing 21. EBC was the premier summer league, and it seems that with restrictions to NBA contracts and the fear of injuries things just haven't been the same since KD dropped 66 at the Rucker. During the summer they bring out wood floors for the league to be played on, so that definitely is a plus. It seems as though the sponsorship of Nike has really put Dyckman on the map as far as media goes. Either way, if you are visiting make sure to stop by and take in the beauty of the courts and take a stroll around the park too. read more

I am from the area and I can say that the city has definitely cleaned up the park 1000% and has stepped up the security by adding NYC police officers on game days. During the summer when they EBC host their famous Basketball tournament, they install a really cool wood floor court which are easier on the player's legs. The teams and competition aren't as good as it use to be 10yrs ago when you had rappers, Jay Z, Dipset, Fat Joe, P Diddy and Mousey's Dream Team fly NBA players to town to play on their respective team for the day. I feel you had more well known HS and College basketball players from NY who also participated in the tournament as well. I think the drop is also contributed to the traveling And 1 teams and Ball out teams which show case a lot of street ball talent. If you drive, get there early to get parking or use the overpriced parking garage across from the park.
