Frank McDonough moved from Chicago to Florida to escape his hay fever in 1954, two years before Light House Point even became a city. He served on the city commission from 1963 to 1968 and then was appointed mayor in 1968. He was re-elected until he resigned in 1984. In 1989 he was elected as mayor again and formerly retired in 1993 while still staying active in city affairs. In 1982 Lake Placid Park was renamed Frank McDonough Park in honor of his many years of service to the city. Frank McDonough passed away in 2001 at the age of 81. Frank McDonough Park started as a field that city recreation pioneer Dan Witt and some other fathers cleared so that children living in Light House point could have a recreation league of their own. Fifteen pallets of sod were donated so a football league could practice. Today, six acre Frank McDonough Park provides recreation to all ages in Lighthouse Point. The park has a baseball field, football/soccer field, sand volleyball court, 2 racquetball courts, 9 clay tennis courts which is home to the Lighthouse Point Tennis Center, a covered firefighter themed playground with two play area, one for tots, and one for older kids, and restrooms. Added to the park in 2020 is outdoor body-weight resistance workout equipment that includes a sit-up bench, chest press, pull-up bars, leg press, push-up station and more. This park is ideal for sports, play, and working out. The city has even staged concerts in the park in the past. Don't forget to stop by the Heroes Shrine located in the northwest corner of the park where you will find a memorial to those who serve in the military and first responders.

Too bad there is no cover over the adult exercise equipment. There are also a lot of benches but the drinking fountains aren't working very well by the playground. There are bathrooms near the tennis courts with more powerful fountains. The park has tennis courts, a basketball court, baseball field, and a general playing field. There is a parking lot nearby that shares space with a church and there might be more parking by the tennis courts. It is a great park with a lot of amenities.

They were among a half dozen sharecroppers who eventually were able to buy the land they farmed enabling them to work for themselves. Tony Mitchell helped those in his community get business loans and Cheatham Moore was the first African-American appointed to the City's Housing Authority. Mitchell and Moore were both instrumental in getting the city to create Westside Park in 1951 so that African-Americans in the segregated city would have a place for recreation. The park has now been named the Mitchell Moore Park and Community Center to honor the men's legacy. You can find the 16.1 acre Mitchell Moore Park next to Blanche Ely High School. Park amenities include a 10,000 square foot community center which has a gymnasium, arts and crafts room, meeting rooms, and kitchen. The park also has five lighted basketball courts, football/soccer field, picnic pavilion, playground area, lighted softball/baseball fields, four lighted tennis courts, volleyball courts, and the Houston/ Sworn Aquatic Center with 9, 25 yard lap lanes and 2, one meter spring boards. In 2021 The Orange Bowl Committee and the City of Pompano Beach partnered together to create a 4 million dollar recreation facility including a new football field known as Orange Bowl Field at Mitchell Moore Park. The Orange Bowl Committee's Legacy Parks program has provided over $21.5 million worth of improvements to selected South Florida parks and recreational facilities. Other improvements to the park included new synthetic turf football field, an electronic scoreboard, a new press box, shaded seating, an enhanced walking trail, and upgrades to the two existing baseball fields, and building refurbishments. Mitchell/Moore Park brings the community together. The park hosts many events. sports teams, lessons, and activities like summer dive in movies at the pool. The football field is state of the art and gives the youth in the city a safe place to practice sports and learn all the great lessons that come with it.
