Although I signed up via the CDFA website months ago, I was unable to get the ecard necessary for this year's Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). This very likely due to the new Federal Administration. Historically I had been able to get these benefits (vouchers then) at my local farmers market here in Alameda. But due to the unbelievably awful behavior on the part of a mob of seniors (!) apparently from the Asian American community out of Oakland, no one wanted to risk going through that nightmare on distribution day again - EVER. The closest distributions this year were in San Leandro and Dublin; not close AT ALL, particularly for a disabled senior. I'm old but I'm also extremely persistent, and given the rising cost of food now the SFMNP benefits are a lifeline more than ever. So, I kept asking and researching, wash, rinse, repeat over and over and over. Finally, a worker from the Oakland Center came to our f.m. last week to arrange for an educational outing for the Oakland seniors who had gotten the benefit SFMNP ecards at that Center. He told me how to contact the worker in charge of distribution in Oakland, and added that there were still some ecards left. Cue the clouds parting, the sunbeams and the angelic chorus! Yesterday, I took the local bus, hobbled down Grand Ave. to the Downtown Oakland Sr. Center and received this year's SFMNP ecard. Re-cue the sunbeams and angels x 10. This place deserves 5 stars and then some. Note: While at the Oakland Center, I noticed (in late morning) some elder women dressed wildly inappropriately in (gaudy) evening gowns, sparkly shoes & too much makeup. Eh? No, not Halloween costumes, perhaps due to the dancing going on in one large room. This was in the morning...harmless but weird. I guess when one becomes very old, fun is where you can find it. I feel like I'm part of their community too...I feel my family is welcome. My father loves to attend daily and doesn't want to miss it. He likes the food and the company and all of the attention that he receives. During the second week of August at approximately 11:00 a.m., a mystery shop tour was conducted at…read moreCenter for Elders Independence in El Sobrante. Overall, the facility was clean and welcoming, and the tour guide was professional and knowledgeable. It did take some time to receive a return call, but once contacted, scheduling the tour was easy. The front desk was a mixed experience. The young woman on the left was friendly, pleasant, and welcoming. However, the staff member introduced as Alicia, the transportation coordinator, was observed eating at the front desk, wearing what appeared to be unprofessional attire, and had no visible name badge. She was also on a personal-sounding phone conversation. Regardless of whether it was lunchtime, eating and having personal conversations at the reception desk does not present the professional image expected when this is the first area families and visitors see. The Day Center was clean, organized, and smelled fresh. Patients appeared comfortable and happy, although no activities were taking place during the tour. This may have simply been due to the time of the visit. The facility has several positive features, including an on-site clinic, adequate staffing, a full kitchen, and areas for rehabilitation and exercise. A few improvements could make the experience stronger. A visible calendar of activities and events at the front desk would be helpful for patients and families. The front desk should also maintain a consistently professional appearance, including appropriate attire, visible name badges, and no eating in the reception area. It would also have been helpful for the tour guide to introduce us to a few patients and employees so we could hear firsthand about their experiences. Overall, the facility has many positive qualities, particularly its cleanliness, services, and professional tour guide. However, the front-desk presentation was concerning and could negatively affect a family's first impression. Addressing these issues and doing more to highlight patient activities and engagement would improve the overall experience. Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

It's almost funny, I forgot that I had reached out to these people before, but I got a flyer in the…read moremail and it looked perfect for me. The kind of people they are looking for is exactly who I am, so I called I left all my information that was eight days ago. After for five days I called again left my information again. Never called back. This should be a crime, to give old people false hope. I have a feeling their scam is to demonstrate to the government that they're taking care of all these people who left their information, then the government sends them money like medical money, and then they send out some more flyers in the mail (probably at taxpayer) then get some more old people. Long time ago I had contracts with my county and the state of California, and I quickly understood that there's usually no oversight, the government doesn't check to make sure you're actually doing the service as you claim you're doing.
