10-1-20 I started with acupuncture and after a several sessions, she advised me that I seemed to have blockages that were emotional rather than physical. My husband had died a year ago and I was in grief. I was angry at him, at myself and the universe so I knew she was right. I had read Norman Plotkin's book while I was in her waiting room a couple of weeks earlier and I thought he might be someone who could help me. I immediately went home and scheduled an appointment. I'm so glad I did. After the 1st session, I had a backlash reaction and was 10 times angrier than I had been. Mr Plotkin suggested that I own that. I decided to complete a series of sessions with him. His hypnotherapy i feel was very beneficial to me and my life/emotions. Norm has changed my life!! I have been dealing with debilitating chronic pain for about 15 years. It has gotten gradually worse and the last nine years have been especially bad. I decided about a year ago to find a better way than opioids or other prescription drugs to deal with the pain, depression, and fatigue. On advice from a friend, I started going to an acupuncturist and that really helped. It gave me energy and pain relief. I stopped missing days at work, but I was still tired and feeling like I was in this dark tunnel of depression. Most days after work and on weekends, I still stayed in bed. Norm has helped me deal with the root of the pain I've been in. From terrible traumas as a child and young adult. He's had to push me a few times to really let go of the pain I've been holding onto. I worked with Norm about 25 years ago and so when a mutual friend who he got to quit smoking a year ago recommended I go to him, I knew I could trust him. I have agreed with all his advice and he's given me some great insight. You have to be ready or at least teetering on the edge of readiness. I've had four sessions and have two to go. I really feel like he has had the answers for me. He made me want to put the work in to get better. My primary reasons for seeing a therapist is so that I can understand aspects of my life that I am not able to see on my own; to address my anxiety. I had never done hypnotherapy before but decided to do six sessions with Norman because he made some insightful points during my initial consultation with him. However, I only ended up attending two because I felt very uncomfortable during our first two sessions. After our first session, I felt that it was not helpful. Norman talked a lot about himself and his experiences which took away from my own. I mentioned that I had trouble being confident in social situations and worried what other people thought. He gave some generic advice and brought up how many women he was able to attract just by being confident. He mentioned more stories about himself meeting Chinese people in Tahoe, meeting his girlfriend, his study club in college. I did not take away any value from them and did not relate to them. We had a session to "connect with and heal the inner child". Norman said I should see memories from the past but I did not. I did not leave sessions feeling I learned anything. Instead I felt very confused and anxious about the situation, wondering if I was the one doing something wrong. After the second session, I informed Norman that I was terminating our services and wanted a refund. Norman refused to answer me and directed me to speak with his practice manager. The manager told me that if the package is canceled the single rate applies, therefore I will not be getting my money back. I had no desire to continue to pay the $700 for Norman to talk about himself. I believe that the quality of a therapist's work is reflected by how satisfied clients feel about his work. But I did not feel that with Norman. I am also very disappointed that he did not refund me my money. I hope no one else gets scammed by him. I strongly believe that he scammed me out of money and I am very disappointed that he charged me for time spent talking about himself. Norman Plotkin was not a helpful therapist. I have since seen another hypnotherapist who focused on my issues, did not share unnecessary stories, and guided me during hypnosis. read more

I have been struggling with impulsive picking at my fingers and nails (to the point that they bleed) for years now. I came across an ad for Norman's hypnotherapy sessions and at this point it was my last option so I gave it a shot. Today I finished my third and what's supposed to be my final session and I'm feeling great! It's too soon to give my results on it but so far the picking has stopped tremendously from when I first met Norman. He is amazing at what he does, he's very kind and the sessions are very relaxing! He treats peoples problems and issues by digging deep and finding the actual culprit causing the problem unlike doctors that treat your problems symptomatically and put a bandaid on it. And that's what I loved most! Don't do what I did and make this your last option to whatever you are struggling with! Make him your first and only option to treating your problem, you won't regret it. I plan on doing a follow up review in one week on my results!! So, I had the pleasure of meeting Norman just this past week. I have to say... I was nothing but impressed! He was extremely personable, knowledgeable in the field, and committed to helping me. My first impression was curious. His office is in the heart of downtown Sacramento, and my appointment was after dark. Needless to say I was a little anxious upon a arrival. Oh, and you cannot park directly in front of the building- but it was close enough. Easy to find, and he was patiently waiting at the door upon arrival- to let me into the building. I had never experienced hypnotherapy, so I literally had no preconceived knowledge of what to expect. He spent an ample amount of time getting to know me, my story... my past and current struggles, and I felt completely comfortable come time for the hypnotherapy. It was very relaxing. Felt much like a guided meditation with the intent of taking me exactly where I needed to go. All and all a wonderful experience. I struggle with chronic pain, chronic depression, and chronic illness... just to name a few. I knew my road to recovery would not be an easy one, and I was at a very desperate part of my life. I have tried all modalities to healthcare, and nothing has helped thus far! I am desperate for relief. The following day, I felt noticeably different. I was connected to my body and my emotions... feeling joy and sadness, which have been quite numb for a very long time. Coincidence, maybe. But I am intrigued none the less. I bought a copy of Norman's book, Master Mind, Master Life from my Acupuncture's office. I was curious and went ahead and got it, just finished it. I actually really enjoyed reading it, it gave me a much better understanding of hypnotherapy and what it could be used for in a professional, non threatening manner. I am Christian and was fearful of this type of modality but I believe if you are comfortable with the person and trust their integrity and they understand your beliefs, you will be safe on working on improving yourself through this modality and working with Mr. Plotkin. read more

I came to Norman based on the reviews here on Yelp, so I feel a duty to return with my experience, and really to warn others about who they are considering hiring. I will not talk much. I'll simply share Norman's own words and let you judge for yourself, whether this is someone you want as a practitioner of any kind, let alone someone who will have you under hypnosis. I had my first session with Norman a few weeks ago. After the session I expressed my concerns that I didn't feel a shift toward what I wanted. This was his reply: "Not to worry. I sensed that to move past the depth of these early influences would require a second inner child session and this is our plan. Lean in to the increment you felt and trust that what you felt is movement past some deep seated stuff. What you are experiencing is partly your subconscious mind a bit fearful of letting go these defense mechanisms that have helped you cope. All part of the process and a good sign to me. Trust. And let's be sure to nail down that next session as soon as possible." and "You do what is best for you. What I see is someone who isn't giving the process a chance because you have been conditioned to expect a magic pill and raised in a generation of instant gratification and as a result you are chasing." I agreed to continue on with a second session. I got sick just before and canceled with 1 day's notice. A week later when I was feeling better we had the second session. After the second session I knew that it was not working for me. Norman just reads off scripts during the sessions and it just was not getting down to the deep-rooted fear of success and abandonment I had come to him for. After the session, I told Norman via email it wasn't working and that I would need to go to another practitioner. I also said this: "Since I didn't see the effects I was expecting, I would like to use the rest of the money to hire another practitioner to try to get my issue resolved. Please let me know if you're agreeable to this." Based on the fact that he was selling results, and I got none and had already paid him $150, I felt completely justified in my request to not pay another $150 for more of no results. I expected he would either say "yes, go ahead and I hope you get the help you're looking for" or "no, I did the work Eric so please pay me". I did NOT expect this: This is Norman's reply (in full, unedited): "Hi Eric, Thanks for your note. I'm sorry that you don't see the value of the work we have done so far. I see this as yet another example of your self-sabotage. Your subconscious mind wants to hold on to the ways it believes have served you and will have you rationalize a perspective that is cynical regarding the value of what you have experienced. In my opinion you have been one of the most resistant clients I have ever worked with. Playing providers off of each other, asking if I could take you deep enough to get the work done, you set yourself up for failure from the very outset. I watched it unfold, but I held space for you because outwardly you said you wanted to do the work. But inwardly it was lip service. You hedged, you cancelled, and now this. All signs of not being serious about making progress. Good luck chasing providers until you find someone who tells you what you want to hear. As for payment, I offered you a payment plan of $150 per session if you agreed to three sessions and allowed you to pay as you go. You paid for one session, but had two and now suggest to me that you feel you have paid enough. Technically you would owe $400 and perhaps if you had paid full price you would have put more stock in what you were receiving and been more committed to the outcome. But I will honor the session price I quoted even though you are not going to participate in the third session. So as I see it, and being charitable, you at least owe the $150 for the second session. I hope I can count on you to do the right thing there. I showed up for you, was patient with you through your drama and put the time in. I do hope you will stay in touch. My personal opinion is that he is manipulative and dangerous. He's likely not even aware of what he's doing, but I am. I had been a smoker for about two years before I met Norm. The past year had been about 15 cigarettes a day, and I was really starting to feel lousy (both physically and mentally). I knew I needed to stop, but I did not have a coherent game plan or strategy in place for how to do so. I may not have even had the motivation, as I always found a reason to delay quitting. In Norm's first session, he told me he would change the way I rationalize my smoking behavior. Instead of finding a reason TO smoke, I would use my rational mind to fight the urge and see how the negative effects of smoking outweigh the positive feelings I had let my mind associate with smoking. The first few days were physically demanding as my body detoxified, but I was able to continuously reassure myself that I was on the right path. Every day, it became a little bit easier and easier to resist the cravings, and I grew proud of my progress just as Norm said I would. He checked in with me several times to ensure I was maintaining my commitment to him and the program by not smoking, and he continued to offer emergency sessions should I feel I needed extra support at any given time. Would I have quit without Norm's help? Maybe, but I don't know how long that would have taken, and I don't feel it would have been as sustainable without Norm prioritizing my values in my subconscious. Thanks Norm! read more

No option for 0 stars. I went to Mr Plotkin hoping to heal my trauma/mental health related issue. While in his office I made a partial payment for a 6 sessions plan which Mr Plotkin failed to email me the receipt for. I reschedule my first appointment with a non 24hr notice. The day of the rescheduled appointment Mr Plotkin send a text message 3 hrs before the appointment requesting to reschedule for the following week. By this time I had not received any receipt for my payment and no where in his website nor in person dis he explain any cancelation fees. The following week I changed my mind about taking treatment and canceled the sessions. After days of not receiving my refund I emailed Mr Plotkin which is when he responded to this claiming to be the receipt and noting to have charged a $175 fee for canceling without a 24hr notice. If Mr Plotkin expects to charge such fee shouldn't he note this information either on website or notification of appointment as well as applying the same conduct himself? read more

I wanted to take the time to let people know about the truly transformative experience I had in 3 hypnotherapy sessions with Norman. I am a clinician, and I do psychotherapy with a variety of clients ranging from people with acute anxiety and depression, to survivors of severe trauma. I also suffer from anxiety, myself. Though I have had many years of therapy, ranging various modalities, I have continued to suffer from anxiety. I have gotten better over the years, but have still had problems dealing with my anxiety when confronted with personally stressful or fearful situations. Recently, I had to take a very difficult exam which I had not been able to pass on 2 separate occassions. I came very close, but was somehow not able to break through. I decided to try hypnotherapy. Norman is very kind, personable, and knowledgeable, was able to speak directly to my concerns, and lay out a plan of action with me, to help me pass this exam. Stellar experience!!! I went to Norm because I have had some difficulty sleeping as a result of my busy work schedule. My goal was to help channel some positive energy towards my inner self, so that I can clear my thoughts and sleep well. I achieved all of this and much more. To begin with, Norm has a very calm and friendly demeanor. From the moment I stepped into his office, I felt a sense of calm and relaxation. Norm makes you feel comfortable and he helps focus his sessions on your personal needs. What I enjoyed was that he explains the process and asks you what it is you wish to accomplish (in my case, it was to sleep better). Overall, my experience there was great and I highly recommend that everyone try this out at least once. It is a very unique and valuable experience. I had never tried hypnotherapy before, but I am looking forward to going back. (PS: contrary to what you may see in movies, you are in full control of what is going on). I went to Norm in hopes of finding peace with an aspect of my job I despised, that being cold calling. Norm gave me an incredible amount of time and attention. We went well over the one hour appointment duration on each visit. He took the time to understand the core of my problem and customize a specific plan to help me overcome it.
