If you love western U.S. history, this is the place to visit. There is no way anyone could study…read moreeverything in the museum in a day. There is a small library, pages of information to read and tons of historical relics. There are old covered wagons, a cool caboose and farm equipment. There is a rock and bone room that is quite interesting. There are displays of old western wear, quilts, old postcards, photos, and a gabillion other things. If you're traveling I-40 west through Tucumcari, I highly recommend stopping to look at the cool architecture, the museum and the town's 1960's feel.

Lol. The museum was closed when I stopped by on Sunday, August 2, 2026, yet, there was still plenty to see outside such as a caboose firehouse, a windmill, a New Mexico Air Guard jet, and a World War II-era U.S. 90 mm M1 (or M1A1/M2) anti-aircraft gun. Whew! Artifacts inside range from maps and photos to vintage everyday artifacts. This museum is near another Tucumcari gem known as the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum and Natural Sciences Laboratory. Im the past, The building later served as an army corps office, a local hospital, and a World War II glider pilot training school before becoming a museum in 1969 Perhaps someday I will be here on a Tuesday through Saturday and it will be open. While the smallish museum was closed on the Sunday (August 2, 2026) that I was able to visit, I knew in advance the exhibits they had on display: + Mesozoic Era dinosaur fossils + A 40-foot-long Torvosaurus (T-rex-like) skeleton from the Jurassic period + Casts of dinosaur footprints + Fossils from local dig sites + "Dig for Bones Sandbox" + Rocks and mineral from around the world They also have a gift shop. Admission prices - which will give you a chuckle - are currently as follows: + Children (3 and under) Free + Juniors (4-11) $6 + Adult (12-59) $10 + Seniors (60-98) $8 + Dinosaurs (99 and older) Free + Educators/College Students (ID Required) $8 + Active Military (ID Required) $8 + Call for group rates! I would have gladly paid that price if it had been open & my dog was allowed in (which she probably isn't because... BONES! Lol). TIP Closed Sundays and Mondays. There are many bronze statues that you are allowed to touch to feel what the dinosaur bones would feel and look like at that size. There's also life size dinosaur sculptures and dioramas and the museum strives to relate dinosaurs to our modern birds. There is a sizable kids area as well.
