    The bike I learned on!
    Jo W.

It's been 2 years since I passed the motorcycle training class here in May 2023, and I'm very happy to say that I'm still riding and also commuting on my motorcycle! I took and passed the beginner's class in May 2023. The location in the Southland Mall parking lot in Hayward is very convenient, and they have motorcycles to accommodate shorter and petite riders like myself. You have to request it in advance so that they can save one for you. I had never ridden a motorcycle prior to taking the beginner class here, and I really appreciate learning the basics. On my first day though, I fell while trying to shift gears and the clutch broke. I had to be rescheduled to come back another weekend, which thankfully was free of charge. It was kind of a pain to be on standby, especially when they don't have class at the Hayward location every weekend, but I was able to come back 2 weeks later and came early enough to join that class. That weekend, I barely passed by 1 point! Instruction-wise, Alfonso is fantastic! He was there the first weekend I was there, and he was so patient and able to explain things that help beginner riders like me understand certain concepts of riding and handling a motorcycle. Sadly, he was only there the first weekend I was there. The other instructor, Dale, was there both weekends. He's okay, but his method of teaching is yelling out what you're doing wrong and to do something, which honestly isn't very helpful. He's otherwise a nice guy, but not the most effective instructor. But at least I passed under his instruction. The admin, Taylor, is super helpful and communicative over both email and phone. After passing the class, I was able to go to DMV to take the written test so that I can get my driver's license to reflect the M1 license. I now have my own motorcycle, and wish there were intermediate classes held at the Hayward location too.

It was time to renew my driver's license, so I decided to get my M1 endorsement while I was at it. I signed up for the Basic CMSP Course at Norcal Moto, which includes a 5-6 hour online classroom portion and two hands-on motorcycle training days. My instructors Marcelo and Horace (Instructors on 10/11-12) were great. They were informative, helpful and very experienced. I had zero prior riding experience and had never been on a motorcycle before. I do drive a manual car, which helped me understand clutch control and shifting, but riding a motorcycle is a completely different challenge. You're balancing, counter-steering, and managing the physics of two wheels. During one of the exercises, I stalled the bike, lost my balance, fell off the bike and dropped it. This one experience itself was super valuable. I came into this course with no idea how to ride, and I can confidently say I left it feeling comfortable to operate a motorcycle safely, while recognizing and understanding what I need to improve and work on. I highly recommend anyone interested in riding to come take the course and learn in a safe, controlled environment with knowledgeable instructors!

Lineup of rental motorcycles and gear.

Never rode a motorcycle before, but came out after 2 days feeling confident in my new abilities. Rental gear and bikes were new and updated. Dale and Marcelo are patient instructors who provide useful individual feedback, even in a 12-person class. Highly recommend, and I will be coming back for more!

My main instructor was booked out and also went on vacation, so I thought I would miss the chance to take my test. I found Bay Hill on Yelp and decided to book them for two things: 1. A two hour crash course in preparation of my test. 2. Vehicle rental for the test + 30 minute prep before. The two hour crash course was perfect. My instructor was calm, gave great instructions and made it so easy to feel comfortable behind the wheel. He was able to frame things that I needed work on in a way that I was able to process and internalize. By the end, he had me Feeling confident going into my big day. The day of my test, I met with JP at the DMV 45 minutes before my appointment. He walked me through the car I rented and what to expect for pre-test check (which was exactly how it went down, so I was well prepared for it.). Then we did some practice runs of the test route while JP very detailedly pointed out things I need to do and what examiners will look for during the test. Then he lined up with me until it was my turn. The entire time, he patiently answered any questions I had and it's clear from my time with him that he loves what he does and genuinely does his best to make you feel as confident and prepared as you can be for your test. Long story long, I passed my test and JP and the Bay Hill Driving School team deserve credit even though I only took two lessons with them. As an adult going for their license, you deal with way more self-doubt and anxiety than your younger counterparts, but these guys were able to quell a lot of that in the brief time I worked with them. I can't recommend them enough. Great instructors and even better people. Thank you JP and team!

She would smack gum, eat food, and generally had an attitude of not caring. Only until my last class did she run me through a couple of rules but I never really learnt anything under her teaching. It was high pressure and everything I learned was like being tested without knowing there was a test or what the material was on. The only saving grace here is that the people at the office are great, they kindly signed my second permit and gave me another learning certificate for $25 when I lost my first one. I would shop around for a better driving school before settling on this one.

After the second one she was able to drive on the highway. The third session was used to practice routes that a typical DMV behind the wheel test does.. that was helpful to understand and I was able to take my daughter a few more times to practice before the actual exam day. At the end, her driving test was successful and she was able to get the license. We will definitely recommend the school as the owner, Sheri, is very responsive and they offer weekend classes too.
