Black Chasm Cavern - View of the lake from way above

Our guide Addison "Addie" was very knowledgeable and funny. Glad I finally saw it after many years of living in the area. Highly recommend!

I loved that this tour includes some amazing and beautiful natural wonders as well as a little bit of history. The place was very easy to find and a quick 30 min or so drive from Jackson. There is a lovely little store to check out before or after your tour as well. The chasm is a cool 58 degrees which was nice on this 90 degree-ish day. It is a little on the steep side with lots of stairs and a few areas where you definitely need to duck from the rocks but was worth it! The limestone cavern is just amazing with breathtaking stalagmite, stalactite and very rare helictite formations. These helictites look like they defy gravity and grow in amazing curling directions. Incredibly, there is a blue lake at the very bottom of the cavern that can be seen from way above - unfortunately we are unable to access that far down but man I wish I could! We learned the lake has tiny little shrimp that live in the pure crystal waters and the only place they are known to exist, mind blowing. Our tour guide was great and shared so much knowledge and history. History: The chasm was discovered in 1854 long after the Miwok people had already lived in the area. Of course, the discoverers wanted to try and cash in on their discovery so they began charging folks and would literally lower them by rope into a hole in the ground with some candles precariously balanced on a plank of wood. Luckily we have stairs and nicely built platforms with cave lighting to see this amazing magical national landmark. Definitely worth the visit!

Southern Pacific Railroad Superintendent House - House

The Southern Pacific Railroad Superintendent's House is yet another one of Historic Folsom's spots…read moreon the National Register for Historic Places. While the address is technically on Oakdale Street, the house is actually visible from Folsom Blvd. It sits just behind the Folsom Parkway Rail Trail, in front of the old rail yards between Natoma and Bidwell. A sign outside the house reads: "Southern Pacific Railroad Superintendent's House This house was built around 1915 for the railroad section superintendent and his family. From here, the superintendent oversaw Folsom's junction railroad operations until the late 1950's. The superintendent's house is listed on the National Register for Historic Places." To be honest, it's not the most interesting landmark I've come across in Folsom. I had to read the application for the NRHP to find out what was even special about it. Apparently, the architecture is unique. Also, the Southern Pacific Railroad had some very interesting housing hierarchies for its employees, housing them in everything from bungalows to box cars. This landmark is one of the best remaining examples of how a high-ranking employee was housed. For more information, I would recommend reading the NRHP paperwork, which is currently available on the NPS website at: https://bit.ly/3kR2ukh There is no parking near the landmark, but it is within walking distance from either the Historic Folsom or Glenn lightrail station via the Parkway Rail Trail.

Last night the stars aligned and I FINALLY got to check this restaurant out. I loved the decor in there! It was rustic and fun. Mismatched chairs, barrels, chandeliers mixed with industrial looking string lights.. it was great! The menu had a lot of options and the prices looked very reasonable. I opted for the Brisket sandwich for $18. It came with two sides and I picked the Smoked Cheddar Mac N Cheese and the Creamy Potato Salad. Each table had a few different BBQ sauce options too. My food came out quick. The Smoked Cheddar Mac N Cheese had good flavor and a great creamy texture. The Creamy Potato Salad also had great flavor and a great texture. I really liked it versus the potato salads that I have had at a lot of other BBQ places because often they are "eggy" and that is not what I prefer. The brisket was amazing. GREAT flavor and so tender. I ate 80% of it before I realized that I needed to try the BBQ sauces lol. I tried all three of the sauces on my table... Original, Sweet & Bold, and Hickory Smoke. All three were good but Original was my favorite. While eating an employee stopped by my table twice to make sure I did not need anything and that everything was good. He was very friendly. Now my biggest dilemma is figuring out when I can go back! This was the best BBQ I have found in awhile outside of Houston!

I ordered the brisket sandwich, baked beans, and creamy mashed potatoes. It was all fantastic! The price was very reasonable and the amount of food is perfect. I really enjoyed the fact that the sandwich wasn't sloppy and just covered in sauces like some barbecue places do. You could really taste the flavor in the brisket. The baked beans were also wonderfully cooked and full of flavor. My order was taken quickly and the food arrived in a very timely manner. I'll happily return the next time I'm in town.
