A country pub, we come in, it's a little more expensive. We came in on a long weekend, flat stick. We're a table of 14.... With kids. We order in dribs and drabs. They tell us they won't process the order until we've all ordered, they want to make sure our meals come out at the same time. We sit, talk, drink, the kids go down by the river with some family, they run and play. Do usual kid stuff without being policed. Our meals come out, delivered by smiling staff, they make eye contact, they speak to us, like people. The food comes, we swap forks full of food, muttering and sighing. No one is jealous of what the others have eaten, because it's all amazing. We eat almost silently, vague awe and reverence. Forks clattering, voices, views... Views to live for, views you wake up for. The owner runs this place like it matters, like we matter.... A big group with kids.... Rib eyes, 450gm babies. Parmas, not your usual crap. Kids meals... We hovered hoping they wouldn't eat it all. There wasn't an empty plate. This is a day when they're flat stick, standards could be excused for slipping. They didn't. You're made to feel like you're local, you have the good word, but we're just randoms. A weekend away has become a memory to cherish.Keep wearing no shoes Simon, you run an amazing business, you have amazing staff. read more
