Woohoo! As good as it gets! That's really what this restaurant is. I've been to this place like 3-…read more4 times already. So I'm just gonna do a overall summary here. Authentic Malaysian cuisine. Trust me. I've been trying many places in Adelaide looking for familiar taste, something that brings back the fond memories of the past. And nowhere else in Adelaide can you find someone that cooks better Malaysian food than this place.. . So far I've tried Nasi Lemak, Beef Hor Fun(wide rice noodle) , Wanton Noodles and Laksa. I've also tried the drink called "Cham" which is actually a mixture of soybean milk and glass jelly. Although there are some 'modification' to the ingredients, like the Wanton noodles, the Wanton are not actual Wantons, but Dim Sim; most dishes I tried are true authentic taste of Malaysian food. It's common to see a long queue in the restaurant. You have to make your orders first and get a table number from the counter. The restaurant settings feels like the 80 to early 90s. Definitely my favorite. Be sure to try the Beef hor fun if you do visit.

Some of the dishes on offer are Curry Chicken, Beef Rendang, Char Kway Teow, Indian Mee Goreng, Laksa , Roast Chicken Rice with Noodle Soup, Lor Bak, Beef Hor Fun with additional Crispy Roast Pork, Lor Bak and Hainanese Chicken Rice. It is very busy most days as it is only open for lunch. A lot of university students also frequent this place. You can usually get a seat upstairs with ten minutes waiting time. My favourites are the K.L. Hokkien Mee and Curry Chicken. Customer Service - Star rating 1 star only What a pity that the woman/owner behind the Bain-marie counter is so rude. She doesn't value having customers in her restaurant by not being pleasant. I asked for certain pieces of curry chicken from the Bain- marie and was told a straight out NO! As a customer I want to be able to buy what I see. I don't want the scrawny chicken legs! When I questioned why not, she replied that if I want the thigh pieces, I would be charged $3 per piece. Too bad that this was such a tasty Chicken curry. Overall good food - terrible customer service, but this doesn't stop the customers from coming back.

But, when you find a Thai Restaurant that creates modern versions of Thai and fusion food, you have a winner. Would you believe that this place is open from 7am to 9:30pm (Mon-Sat). They will cater for you from Breakfast to Dinner. The chef gets the restaurant in the wee hours of the morning to make in-house pastries (from scratch) and prep for the day. Did you hear that? Pastries from scratch in a Thai Resturant! Now, if that doesn't grab your attention, well... you obviously do not love food as much as me. You got to love the enthusiasm in this restaurant. You will be given full table service and the staff are so excited to explain why each dish is special. We had to order the Chicken Wings (Thanks Ngan Q. for the fab mouthwatering photos). And yeah baby, they were so good. Five a serve is clearly not enough, I want twenty! The scallops were really fresh with some beautiful minced lemongrass ontop. Very pretty and tasty looking morsels. Another thank you goes out to Ian L. for the recommendation of the Hide'n'Seek Chicken skewers. They were bang on BBQ Chicken with a soy based dressing. Lovely flavour and will be another crowd pleaser. Order then Finally the Som Tum platter is fresh and great for sharing. The idea is to grab the ingredients and create a wrap with the lettuce provided. There are little sausages, beautiful papaya salad, noodles, cabbage, fresh herbs and some steamed veg. Lovely dish and great for the health conscious. I am sincerely excited to try a breakfast here. The menu looks great!

At first, I thought the name was rather peculiar for a Thai eatery, but not so much for a bar. When it was explained to be by one of the partners, Apple, I can see where they are going with it. The name is derived from its 'hidden' location, thus implying the fun of having to seek it out, once found, punters will find the food both rewarding and unique. The vibrant space is cheerful and contemporary due to the bright décor and ornaments. Multi-coloured commercial pendants hang from the ceilings adding to its vibrancy. The bright orange and very long couch takes pride of place along the wall where most of the downstairs seating takes place. The high ceilings provide a greater sense of space, also giving it a very airy feel. Acoustics is not an issue on this particular evening even with an almost full house, excluding the use of upstairs space. It would be interesting to see how it holds up with a full house. Perusal of the menu saw us appreciating the different items being offered such as Som Tum platters, grilled scallops with lemongrass butter, far removed from the typical offerings that seem to dominate most Thai restaurants and cafes. Recommendation was made and we ended up ordering a feast. Som-Tum was ordered, so was the scallops. We also added chicken satays, chicken wings, Tom Yum Prawns soup, cabbage rolls and fish skewers. It was the perfect assortment to get a real feel for the type of cuisine they were trying to bring to Radelaide. We learnt that the dinner menu was created to reflect the different dishes from the different towns and cities of Thailand they the partners originated from. While the ex Sous chef of Madame Hanoi's creativity allow her to put a contemporary spin on the breakfast and lunch menu. Three unique menus were borne, with a weekly specials board. Every single dish we had was delightfully Moorish, especially the chicken wings. I could easily have devoured a bucket of those. It was a perfect combination of sticky, crunchy and fresh flavours. The grilled scallops with lemongrass butter were also divine. Tom yum soup made sense for cold wintery nights so, was very welcoming indeed. Not a massive fan of the cabbage rolls, as I found it rather beige, however the sauce was awesome though and made up the slack. Chicken satays are served with small triangles of toast and a cucumber relish. We both thought that was interesting, but it appears that is how it is eaten in Thailand. Our evening was most enjoyable. We had great food, great attentive service and very informative staff who were more than happy to enlighten us on how each dish came about. We rolled out of there with a big smile and a very happy tummy.

They make everything on site and you can appreciate the taste of chillies and lemongrass in the various dishes - although there is not chillies in everything so if your palate is not one for hot food don't despair there is plenty for all to select from. I particularly like to Beef dishes because you always get a decent serve on either steamed or fried rice, but there are things like Thai Chicken that are also very tasty. It is a heartening sight to see so many International Students lined up waiting to be served and the place is almost always pretty packed, so you just know it's good. It doesn't take much brain power to work out the quality of the food when you see the amount of people waiting; I've never waited so long I passed out from malnourishment either. This whole area on Pulteney Street is becoming a bit of a hub with the arcade right next door opening a range of international kitchen style vendors - so even if you don't fancy what Knoodle have to offer it's only a short walk to select something else for the more conservative palate. You can stop for crispy spring rolls over the counter in the street or come on inside for a larger more substantial meal. Not very expensive, and did I mention the full time student (with ID please) discount?!

Perhaps the most popular option for students is the three-choice lunch menu. You can pick up to three different kinds of meat/vegetable selections, along with rice or noodles. Though I tend not to go for this kind of thing with other vendors, Knoodle Junction hits the nail on the head with all of their selections. They also have a wide range of a la carte dishes, including Chinese, Singaporean and Malaysian dishes. Their laksa noodle soup is delicious, give it a try. Plus, if you're a student you get a discount upon showing your card. For this reason, I'm a little crushed that I just graduated!

The cashier was helpful and friendly, explaining the different dishes. I ordered Chicken Laksa and the Pork Fried Rice- and a BEER! Most of these types of places don't have beer, but Honki Tonki does! I sat down, poured my beer, and within minutes, my soup arrived- piping hot and oh so good! The broth was perfect! I love Laksa, and it's hard to find in the US. My fried rice arrived- and, my god, this was some of the best fried rice I have ever had! So tasty, and such a great mix of ingredients. Again, it's not a fancy place, but the food is so good, so much so that I came here on my last night in Adelaide! Plus, it's open until 10 PM!

An amazing array of top quality, affordable lunch options with a bunch of banging sides to boot. Bonus points for the beautiful bounty of bevvies on offer too. Alliteration aside, I had a great lunch - bbq pork dry noodles with a side of pork dumplings. The dry noodles come laiden with a sprinkle of uber tasty minced pork. The quality of the food is fairly high - around the table we had, inter alia, an array of quail eggs, laksa and teriyaki chicken. Everybody seemed happy and well fed. The lovely folks at HT also stock their own line of delicious chilli oil at $7 a jar. Bargains galore! In fact, the true satisfaction test came 20 minutes after I walked out and realised I was feeling really full. A nice feeling when you drop $15 on a meal for lunch. Happy days. I popped the top on a lovely hills dry cider so my bill was bigger ($9 for a three oaks Adel hills cider) than a regular work lunch but today just happened to be one of those "treat yoself" sort of days. Glad I did. Honki Tonki. Get amongst it.
