After a LONG drive through Victoria's Great Ocean Road, we needed some food - like whoa. These…read moresmall ocean towns are not known for staying open late, and Austrailia doesn't have a strong Yelp scene - so we thought we'd gamble on Pippies before hitting the local Mackers if it was closed. As we walked up, we could smell the bay from the steps. It immediately put us in a seafood kinda mood. The menu was diverse and they had the local flare. Stepping in, we asked the server if they were closed -- and alas -- she told us that they had just closed for the night. Well, we were disappointed. As we were walking away, the manager ran out the door and said "please come in! We'll stay open for you!!" It was music to our ears! I ordered a glass of local white wine and my husband had a locally brewed beer. The prices for alcohol are determined by taxes, so they don't control them. Also keep in mind that they pay their servers a livable wage, so the costs of restaurant food reflects that. This was definitely a "higher end" establishment though with mains starting at around $20. The restaurant is nicely appointed and modern, very clean. There's a gift shop next door that looked nice, although closed after 8 pm. They're situated right on the bay and it would be an incredible view during daylight. We first ordered the abalone for the appetizer (entree). I ordered the seafood plate and my husband ordered the scotch filet. The seafood was incredibly fresh -- and I got to try a yabbie!! Lots of large prawns, scallops, calamari. The fish and chips were fresh and juicy. The filet was cooked to perfection. We had another glass of wine and chatted with the waitress for a while. Then, headed off to our campsite with our bellies full.

My insides get excited when I go to those locally owned places who use fresh and local produce. We booked the Flagstaff Hill dinner and show so the dinner was included in our ticket. The views from Pippies are breathtaking and the decor inside is clean, crisp and very modern. I ordered the gnocchi as an entree which took a while to come out and was a bit chewy. But the main was delicious. A good size for me but someone else might need sides or a dinner partner who will share their leftovers (probably one of the contributing reasons to why my partner stays around and takes me out to dinner). Unfortunately only thing letting this place down was the chewy gnocchi.

Brocky's on Liebig - Baked beans with smoked ham

It is just so cool when you jump in the car to go and find a place for breakfast that is open on an…read moreEaster Sunday and discover one literally around the corner from where you are staying. Yep, that place was Brocky's, and to say that they served a pretty decent breakfast is an understatement. I even broke from my routine of simply having bacon and eggs and dived in for a pancake and I must say I was pleasantly rewarded. Those pancakes were magnificent. My friend ended up having the poached eggs, but I really couldn't get any more than 'yep, there good' out of him (though if they weren't I would have been sure to hear about it). Oh, and they also gave us a massive pot of tea with a side of water, with made the fact that they had simply dumped the tea leaves into the pot not as annoying as it normally is. This is definitely a place that I would recommend to people down this way.

There's a case of inviting looking pastries and sandwiches, and a large room with plenty of small tables. At the back are more loungey spaces. The whole place just yells "breakfast", although perhaps if I'd stopped by at noon it would have screamed "lunch" as well. You don't feel crowded, though: the place is quite large, with high ceilings, and you're not packed in like some breakfast cafe nooks are. The ladies running the show were friendly, took our order, and promptly brought out some tasty coffees and a great brekkie. I had a big bowl of baked beans with smoked ham and a slice of toast (one of my favourites); they had a few types of beans in there, mixing things up. My wife had mushrooms on toast - in fact, one giant, grilled mushroom cap, which she reported as being quite good. If you find yourself on the west end of the Great Ocean Road you could do a lot worse for breakfast.

The staff was attentive and even got us drinks at the bar while they were setting our table. The entrees were mid priced but decent portions. The American Ribeye was good, the bbq bourbon rub added great flavor with a hint of spice. The mac and cheese was just ok. We also ordered the surf and turf which had a yummy garlic sauce with really tender prawns on top. The lamb was also good served with beet chutney and vegetables. It was well cooked with garlic stuffing served inside.

I was staying at the Best Western that Clovelly is attached to and was pleasantly surprised to find that Clovelly is rated one of the top restaurants in Warrnambool. After walking into the city from the hotel to find dinner and checking various websites, we walked back to Clovelly to give it a shot. The dips with Turkish breads was delicious and worth getting as an appetizer. The smaller sized quartet of seafood comes with 2 of each item, perfect for sharing for two people. Each type of seafood was well cooked and comes with paired sauce. We also got the spaghetti and meatball daily special to finish things off. The noodles were cooked al dente and the sauce was good but a little watered down, I'm assuming because the noodles weren't drained all the way. Service was nice and attentive and there was live music from what looked like a neighborhood band. Good experience overall.
