I always say it's pretty difficult to go wrong with Asian cuisine. Sadly, it was here that my…read moretheory was disproven. Chingu is a Japanese and Korean restaurant located in Chinatown. I've eaten a lot of Japanese food in my time, so I decided to try one of the Korean dishes. In their defence, I did decide to be adventurous and ordered something I'd never tried before, so that could have been the problem. It sounded promising; beef, noodles and vegetables in a miso based soup. I was a little disappointed in the portion size; I have become accustomed to the extremely generous portions served at most of the restaurants in Sunnybank and thought Chinatown would be similar. This might not be a fair criticism, as I have a pretty big appetite coupled with the fact that I hadn't eaten lunch that day, so it's likely I would have been disappointed with anything less than the whole cow. I tucked in and sadly I was disappointed again. The flavour was lovely but it just wasn't strong enough for my taste. My dish also came served with a small bowl of rice, as did all the mains. I'm fairly sure this wasn't the correct way to eat it but I improvised and threw the rice in my soup, making a thicker concoction and I'm sure any staff watching me glower in disapproval. I tried some of my Friend's meals, most of whom ordered safer options such as teriyaki noodles. I would say overall about half of the group were very happy with their meals, while the others weren't. We also embarrassingly discovered that the small red circle in the middle of the table is in fact a button that sends a waiter running over to your table.

After 2 visits my husband and I are now firm fans. Even after you get over the novelty of cooking…read moreyour own food on a hot plate at the table, Chingu is great. We chose the all-you-can-eat option for $29.95 a head. There's a good range of dishes to choose from, the soy beef being my personal fave. The only criticism is I could have wished for more vegetable options. Great for a date night or dinner with friends, the cooking and the atmosphere is fun; the staff attentive.

Since I JUST moved to Brisbane, I had to rely on my fellow Yelpers. Thank you Yelpers for being there for me. I was also reassured when I walked in and it was ONLY Korean people customers. They only brought out 3 tiny dishes of sweet potato, pasta, and kimchi. I am used to a more varied selection of at least 6-8 mini dishes to start the meal off. The kimchi was fantastic though! I will give them that. I don't know if that's how they do here in Australia or just at this particular restaurant. Our meals came out in an appropriate amount of time. I ordered the Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap and it was pretty tasty. Not the best I have ever had but filled the craving. We also had the No. 22 with chicken and rice and spicy seafood soup. The ladies are now fans of Korean food! :) The water they served us was really nice and ice cold. The service will come to you if you need them but they won't really bother you. When you're ready to go, you just come to the counter and pay there. After going to eat here, my roommate and I discussed Korean food. She is a big fan and said that this is one of the top two places so yeah! Thanks Yelpers for making my first Korean experience in Australia a yelp worthy one.

Located on Ann Street, just around the…read morecorner from Chinatown, you'd be forgiven that it was a cheap themed japanese restaurant that was more flash than substance with its built in BBQ tables and vinal bench seating. Let me be the first to apologise and recommend that you dig beneath the surface and try this place out. For our first visit we ordered from the menu as we didn't have time to linger over our meal. The quality, texture and flavour of the food was sensational. My poached eggplant with homemade miso was divine with hints of green tea and something equally creamy and almost buttery without being overly salty. A mouth winner for sure. Our other choices included karage, aburi salmon, pork gyoza and edamame beans. The pork gyoza were perhaps the dissappointment of the night, but only because they were so plain when compared with the amazing flavours and textures of the other dishes. Even the condiments of homemade sesame chilli sambal and a beautiful soy blend were something we were prepared to beg the chef for the recipe to attempt to recreate at home. The amazing thing is that with a bottle of sake and 5 dishes we walked away with a bill of $50 for two. An absolute winner and we'll definately be back and perhaps next time to try out the BBQ option.

Service was fast and friendly and the waitstaff actually kneel or sit at your level not hovering over you which i always appreciate. We ordered off the menu to get a feel for the place, we both had hot stone bowls, which neither of us jad experienced before. Our meal came out neatly presented and then we were asked if we wanted oureals stired! Hell yeah, stir away! My server was quick enough to save a piece of pork trying to escape my bowl from hitting the table and my kimchee was stirred through thoroughly. Heads up if you've never had kimchee before, its spicy but totally worth it! Im usually not a fan of spicy food but in the spirit of trying new things i gave it a go and enjoyed it thoroughly. My partner who is a lover of all things spicy was impressed too! Drinks appear to be on the pricey side on the menu but once you see the size of them you quickly change your mind. It was a school night so we only had juice, but i want to go back and try saki! We walked out spending less than $40 for 2 people including drinks and a shared dessert. I'll be going back!
