Driving along 6400 South, I spied a sign for Homestead Nursery. The whole road is lined with…read morehouses, clearly a neighborhood, but there it was. I pulled into the long driveway, and after a few moments a home appeared on my left with another sign out front, and an open gate. Huh. It felt strange and not a little awkward, and I vacillated between checking it out or just driving away, in fact I got out, then sat back in my car, but thought I might as well have a bit of an adventure and marched right through the gate. There was a wooden shed surrounded by shelves of flowers: peonies, clematis, dahlias, impatiens, ice plant and more. As I explored, a young man turned the corner and cheerily greeted me, explaining it was their first day open for the season. After chatting for a bit, he headed back the way he'd come, and I realized the whole back of the garden was filled with lines of bushes and even some trees! I immediately snatched up a small Black Tower elderberry, as I have a bit of an obsession with elderberries. Other plants that caught my eye were a variety of hydrangeas, especially some espaliered specimens, huge blossom heavy apple trees, and pink lilacs. Everything was healthy, and reasonably priced, no more than a big box store like Home Depot, and in some cases, less. They take credit cards, and will create an account so you have a history of purchases. It's run by a sweet family, and the two sons I spoke to were very helpful and pleasant. You can tell they put a lot of care into these plants. The selection is not huge, but it's impressive for a "backyard nursery," and while basics are covered, I also noticed some goodies not available elsewhere (at least I haven't seen them, and I go to ALOT of nurseries). Check 'em out!

My visit to Westside Nursery was actually a failed attempt at visiting Winchester Nursery. You know…read morewhat's stupid? Winchester is smack in the middle of two spaces for Westside, and even though there are signs everywhere, they only serve to confuse matters more. But never fear, I'm here to provide some much needed clarity! On the East corner is Westside's main nursery space, filled with all the perennials, annuals, a few vegetables and herbs, groundcover, succulents, roses, and most of the smaller plants, though there are some trees and bushes here too (through which a charming stone walkway meanders). A register is located in a small shed-like building, along with garden accessories and fertilizers. Now, if you're seeking a larger variety of bushes and trees, you'll have to exit the nursery, walk past Winchester's chain-link fence and entrance, and then go into the OTHER section for Westside on the West side (hahaha) of this whole strip, where the bulk of these plants are housed. Despite the frustration accorded by their wonky set up, Westside was a really nice lil' nursery! The employees were really great. Every single one I interacted with was just cheery as can be, so helpful, and truly and honestly passionate about gardening. There was one gentleman that was just running around, lugging customer's purchases to their vehicles, and all the while so smiley and kind to everyone. The prices were in line with comparable businesses. Parking is iffy - you pretty much have to grab a spot along the street, and it's dang busy! Just be careful and stay safe. It's worth doing at least once to check out Westside.

I live within a mile of this little greenhouse that's tucked away behind a shopping center, and…read moreonly just managed to check it out. It looks quite tiny from the front, and while it is a little bigger once you get inside it's still pretty small. They have some perennials in a strip outside (I noticed coral bells, lupines, clematis, canna lilies, portulaca, and delphinium), but the majority of their plants are annuals. Inside you'll find maybe 20 or so varieties of annual flowers and some decorative grasses. I don't buy a lot of annuals so I didn't pay as much attention to them. They had a teeeeeeeny section of herbs, and then an okay selection of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and squash. Maybe 3-5 varieties of each type of vegetable. The quality was decent, but not amazing. The perennials seemed to be in the worst shape, although it really just looked like they needed a good watering. Customer service was kind of meh. I could only see two employees working. When I was ready to make my purchases I had to wait at the register for several minutes. One employee was outside, and the other was just kind of wandering around inside, but she didn't seem very concerned about checking if anyone needed help (and it wasn't clear if she actually worked there). When she finally made her way over she wasn't rude, but also not entirely friendly, either. This isn't a big deal for a business like this, but it is something to consider. They are definitely associated in some way with Quality Flowers & Plants off of 3300th S, which is about quadruple the size, at least, so I'd probably go there first. If you only need a few plants, however, this is certainly an option. Their prices are the lowest I've seen anywhere (and seem to be the same as Quality's), so if you aren't picky and just looking for the most bang for your buck they have enough options that you should be able to leave pretty pleased. I vacillated a bit on my rating, and while three stars isn't great, and I don't have any strong complaints, they definitely aren't a four star business. And really, it is pretty average, so in the end entirely appropriate.
