A very good French restaurant. Started with French onion soup, which was good but not the best…read moreever. I found it a little sweet but it did all the basic well and is probably the best onion soup on the island. My main was a special of the day and definitely the highlight, dover sole grilled in butter and garlic. They had offered to prepare it however I liked but the waitress suggested it in this manner and I loved it. The fish was very tasty and the butter and garlic were great. Had creamed spinach with it that was also very good. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse. Nice strong flavour and relatively light dessert after three courses. They also had a good, reasonably priced wine list. Finally, found the service quite friendly and French without the bad parts of French.

I have wanted to go here for a while as have heard very good things. I am pleased to say that the…read morefood was very good and it was very reasonable as well. The french onion soup was excellent. Think about it. It's the 27th of June, i.e. mid summer and in a packed restaurant everyone is eating piping hot soup even as sweat beads are building up on their foreheads. The right amount of cheese to soup ratio. Cheese and onion perfection. We also shared some garlic snails and they were good. I only wish there were more of them! For the main we had the chateaubriand (the tenderloin fillet) and it was good. It was originally served rare when we ordered medium rare but this was quickly corrected. The staff were very attentive and service was good. The chateaubriand came with sides of mushrooms, fires or potatoes, veg and onion rings. We decided to instead order sides from the menu and got creamed spinach ( very good and you should order this! my wife raved about this.) fries ( crispy and salty as they should be) tomato salad ( It was ok but nothing to rave about) mushrooms ( again, ok but not something to go crazy about) and baby potatoes. (surprisingly they didn't charge us extra for changing our sides. Very impressed with this as I expected and was prepared to pay for this.) We wanted to have dessert however I was too stuffed! I will come back again for the soup and to try the creme brûlée. The wine list was also very good. We had the pinot noir and it was nice and generally we felt that the wine was priced very reasonably. Downside is the layout of the restaurant. Its very tight and you should try to get a window if you can ( i asked for this with the reservation but did't get this even though I was promised it.) My wife could barely avoid the guys ass next to us when she stood up! Thank goodness he wasn't one of those silent farters you get on airplanes! The tables are also too low and not wide enough. If you are above 4 foot in height and more than 150 lbs then you need to be aware that this restaurant is not built for seating comfort. Still, will I be back? You bet I will. The food is a 5. Good atmosphere and staff. Just a shame about the seating / table and it being too tightly packed. I will be back for the creme brûlée. It is calling me!

We don't get to go here as often as we'd like, but that only helps to make it more of a treat. Its…read moresuch a lovely spot. The decor is quirky (without trying too hard as sometimes places that try to be quirky can be) and ambiance is lovely. whether you are seated in the backroom which is the cosiest I think, or one of the front areas, where you get a lovely view of the bay, it is a pleasure just to sit here. The staff are always friendly and pretty fast and so great to engage with, but I think one of the stars of going here is the food and coffee. The menu is inventive and will have something to please everyone, and so delicious for the most part. I tend to gravitate towards a favourite that they do... eggs in purgatory... but anything Ive tried has been great!

Wow. This place is a hidden gem…read more I only went for breakfast but they also do a bed and breakfast service. The customer service is next to none. The guy that welcomed us is eccentric and so friendly. The front door was opened before we even reached it and we where very warmly Welcomed and led into the dining room to sit at a table with an amazing view. The food was great and the you had plenty to choose from off the menu. I would probably go for the French toast next time as it looked awesome. Staff continually ask do you want coffee refills. They have a wee shop out the back selling gifts. Parking is on street and easy. A great place to go for breakfast and walk along the sea front. It's like being in another world. So good to be away from the pace of city life. Can't wait to go back.

I remember from my youth that this site used to be home to a little Chinese restaurant that always…read morelooked quite dark and dingy, even when it was open, as if there was something going on inside that they didn't want you to know about (maybe some Yakuza bosses were having a meeting inside, who knows). Thankfully, the Chinese there has now been replaced by a lovely little French restaurant called Bistrot Verite (who'd have thought bistro in French was bistrot, hey?) Named after it's owner (a highly reputable chef in the area, I'm told), this cosy little restaurant is placed not far from Birkdale station, making it perfect to hop off a train and venture in for a good meal and a bottle of wine or two before hopping on the last train back home. Their reliance on fresh local produce means the dishes change from time to time depending on what is in season but this makes for an excellent variety of food ranging from lamb to tuna steak and salmon and asparagus pasta. The staff there are friendly and engaging, contributing to the warm and pleasant atmosphere making for a great dining experience. C'est bon (GCSE French in practice, there).

Quite what the difference between a 'bistrot' and a bistro is I have no idea, but if anyone out…read morethere is far more cultured than me, answers on a postcard please. What we do know it does is successfully bring a taste of France to the wealthy suburbs of Birkdale, and what better to put these affluent types in the mood for their next jaunt to gay Paree? (I did phonetics there, I'm sorry. Oh, I mean... ferneticks.) With a reputable chef at the helm and a flair for innovation stamped all over the menu, you can't go wrong with this place, and its location in such a well-to-do area between Southport and Liverpool means that going wrong in the land of Birkdale isn't really an option, and the restaurants follow suit. The mussels are absolutely staggering; the French do throw them together very well and I was most impressed with the almost slurp-worthy white wine sauce. The seasonal dishes are cooked to perfection and presented very prettily, and the accompanying wine list is most impressive too. The service can't be faulted either, and for staff who must be starstruck on a daily basis by sporting heroes and actors, they're extremely down to earth and most of all, friendly, accommodating and helpfully informative with the menu, and to be honest, the prices aren't all that bad for the generous portions you get given Salut, as they say on the continent.
