My friend has been going to Southpaw for a couple of years now. She finally talked me into going to…read morethe 6a class with her. The signage for the gym is hard to find. I didn't notice it out front. There were a bunch of foodtrucks in the lot that was confusing. Luckily I saw my friend's car and parked near the back of the building. There is a sign on the door but it is a non-descript building. Inside is a cute simple gym space. There are bags, a small ring, some clothes for sale, a place to put your items, and the front desk. The instructor was really nice and showed me the basic punches that we would be working through. The class was great. I felt like I got a great workout even if I didn't get all the combos perfectly. The instructor came over and gave helpful advice and was attentive to the class. I am glad I got to experience this gym. It was fun and gave off a great welcoming vibe for newcomers.

Southpaw has been so welcoming and encouraging to me, the owner, Eric knew me by name the first class and all the trainers are constantly helping and encouraging. I've never been made to feel guilty if there's something I can't keep up with, they give us alternatives so we keep ourselves moving. Always an awesome workout and feel so proud of myself when I'm done! Highly recommend!

I've been training at Ronin for a few months now and I'm absolutely addicted to it. I'm studying…read moreBJJ and Muay Thai, and I occasionally get a workout in there. I've also started my older son in kids BJJ. I wanted to wait a few months before I reviewed. Below are a few high points of my experience at Ronin in no particular rank order. 1. Family atmosphere. Everyone there is welcoming and warm. I've been utterly shocked at how helpful and friendly everyone is, from the staff and trainers, to my fellow students. It's a tough thing to walk into a legit fight gym for the first time. It's also extremely humbling. My experience at Ronin so far in just a few short months has already positively impacted my mental health and the way I approach life. It's quite unbelievable. 2. World class instruction. BJJ is where I spend the most time. How truly lucky is Columbus, OH to have Vitor Oliveira, a world champion Jiu Jitsu competitor, teaching here? Vitor is a machine on the mats in competition and has dedicated his life to Jiu Jitsu. But he's also a fantastic coach. However, the culture he has instilled is what stands out to me the most. A fish out of water if what it feels like the first class you attend, but every single student of his has been welcoming to me, non-judgemental and extremely helpful. Everyone is truly interested in each others progression. Laurah Hallock, who manages the gym, is the only female black belt in Columbus, and she is also a fantastic instructor. For women considering BJJ, they have a womens only class once per week and the other classes are coed. BJJ is the ultimate equalizer to strength, so women considering self defense should consider it first and foremost before anything else. For Muay Thai, Aaron Bogg's class has the same feel. Aaron has a knack for instruction and he's also serious about his students progress. He made me feel comfortable within 10 seconds of my first class. I'd love to have more time for Muay Thai. The same culture is prevalent in his class. 3. Kids BJJ. I've started my older son in kids BJJ and the instruction and class format for the little ones is perfect. If you want your kids to learn discipline, patience, impulse control and be able to truly defend themselves in this crazy world, look no further than Jiu Jitsu. They sort the class by age group, so the little ones don't get mixed in with the bigger kids. Sarah, Des, Sal and others do a great job keeping it fun with games and drills that develop important skills and knowledge at the same time. They're putting in showers right now which is a bonus. They also have a weight training area, a boxing ring and an MMA ring. Boxing classes, Judo, Yoga, Kids Wrestling and a Ronin Fit class are also taught at Ronin. If you have any doubt about where the best train, visit Ronin and see for yourself.

There are a number of top ranked competitors that train here. I was involved in a number of Martial Arts systems up into my 30s but I hadn't practiced anything since. Now being in my 50s I got the itch to get involved again but I wasn't interested in competing again. I wanted a more practical self-defense system to learn. I chose Krav Maga and I'm so glad I did. I have learned so much and had so much fun. Casey Boyer is an excellent instructor and the Krav team is a very friendly and fun group. The Krav Maga classes have really hit the spot! If you're searching for a training center, then I'd give Ronin a try. I think you'll be impressed too.

As we walked in, I started to get a little anxious. I saw the big heavy bags, gloves, and medicine balls...what was I getting into?! But Eric gave us a warm welcome. He explained the workout and get us going right away. 9Rounds is a boxing, kicking boxing, and circuit workout. Each stations is marked 1-9 and has a white board with an exercise listed. There's one timer for everyone that sounds at 2:30 and then at 3 minutes. And there's always a coach there, offering support. You workout individually, one person per circuit. One thing I loved: no set class time. Pick any time they're open and come on it. Now who can't make that work?! We made an appointment since it was our first time. But as a member, you can go in any time. You just hop in at the beginning of the next round and off you go. Since it was our first time, Eric spent some time showing us proper form. After two rounds, we put on gloves and got to hit the heavy bags. At 2:30 the timer sounds and you go all out. Then at 3 minutes Eric called out an exercise for everyone like high knees, jumping jacks or plank. We did that 30 seconds then moved on to the next circuit. Three minutes felt like eternity for some circuits. But I pushed myself and kept going. At the end, I had some a sense of accomplishment. Not only did I learn something new, but I got a great workout too. If you're looking for a challenging workout, personal coaching, and even nutritional guidance then this is your answer.
