The technician came and hooked up a pressure gauge and an ammeter to take some readings. He came in the house and measured output temperature and told me I could use a 'head cleaning'. He also told me that I was low on Freon. He quoted me $1265 to top off the Freon (plus tax). I looked up the price of the refrigerant to find retail price is $75 to $300 for 25 lbs and my system 'needed' about a half pound (it only takes 3lbs from empty) which reasonably means that I needed as little as $1 worth of R410. A quick internet search tells me that it's a 5 minute job to put the refrigerant in. So, I paid $200 for a 'tune up' that did nothing to tune up the system but rather was just a 'foot in the door'. And I got a quote for topping off Freon that was more that you can buy a mini split system components for new (uninstalled). That's my experience with these guys.

Although it was off-peak hours at night on a weekend, when we called up Ace Oil to report a complete outage, Dave really responded. Although he was ticked that he had to fill something on an out of oil call from his home to the store to pick up the truck to come and fill our tank in Dutchess Co (something not many companies would do because of the bridge toll in between during inflated times), Ace Oil came through. It took about 4 voicemail calls and about an extra 45 minutes of waiting for them to arrive, but it was better after the visit. Although Ace Oil has had their prices higher than most companies during this inflation, the day they came out, the prices seem to have been cheaper - and when you factor in a Special delivery fee for out-of -oil call and a HEAP credit on the account at the time, this place was there for us when most companies would have told us "oh well." Dave came in to reset the furnace and even though our driveway isn't exactly the world's best, he managed to reset it communicating to me what needed to be done to get the furnace working again. He pardoned our house and driveway's mess and continued to take care of things as planned.

The technician came right away but he called the owner even though I had specified to call me as person on premises waiting. Technician was friendly and knowledgeable and fixed the issue in about 2 minutes. It turns out he installed the unit and had been out the year before for the same thing (there is a safety that often goes out in very hot weather). This could have been done over the phone. Nothing about it in the manual. I was charged $95 just for him to pull into the driveway, and another $98 to push the button. I was never asked if I wanted him to light the pilot or was informed of the charge. I felt a bit blindsided. Very nice guy thought and quick response; I would have them back but will get the charges on the table next time before anyone touches anything.
