It looks closed from the outside and you have to use the doorbell to get in. The drinks are expensive, but good, and made well. I ordered off-menu since I wasn't really feeling anything on it. I really just wanted a nice old fashioned and after my long day, I was extremely satisfied with the one presented to me. The ice cubes are hand-cut, and whenever a bar combined a rocks glass, hand-cut ice, and some whiskey concoction, it's a take-my-money moment for me. The Kinly is my favorite bar in Frankfurt!

If you want to experience authentic Frankfurt food then this is an absolute-must…read more It's such a traditional and charming restaurant with pure rustic accents and vibes. When we were there it was hopping busy with locals sometimes groups of 10+ having dinner. The service was great. We were treated as though we belonged and it felt great. They're known for Apfelwein (you guessed it, Apple wine). It is a flavorful, light, and refreshing wine that paired nicely with our meals. They make a green sauce that is so fragrant and tasty I started eating it by the spoonful. The food was so good. We ate everything, leaving nothing behind. This traditional German tavern was everything I was hoping it would be and then some. I am totally in love.

My German friend recommended Zum Gemalten Haus so we checked it out on a Friday evening for dinner…read moreand drinks. We walked over after exploring some attractions in Frankfurt and taking a nice stroll in the park. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The outside of the bar and restaurant is beautiful. Above the restaurant, there's an apartment complex covered in a mural. It's a welcoming start. From there, there's a beautiful outdoor patio where you'll see more murals. That's the best place to sit. There's also a small interior dining area and a small back patio if you want something a little more private. Service (3/5): Pretty much your typical European service. Not terribly attentive or friendly but acceptable. We had to grab our waiter's attention several times. Drinks (4/5): When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Germany, that means beer. The running joke on this trip is that the best cocktail in Germany is beer. I had both a helles beer and a weizener (wheat) beer. Both are quality as you would expect from German beer. Food (3/5): I had the veal schnitzel (breaded cutlet) which is served with fried potatoes and green sauce. Green sauce is a Frankfurt specialty and it's made from a blend of seven herbs. It's a little too herbaceous for my taste but still worth trying. The thin cutlet was solid and I always gravitate to veal on a menu as it's not something you come across every day. With that being said, I've had a lot of traditional German food on my trip and this experience was a notch below the norm. I'd focus on the drinks and ambiance as the highlights here.

The atmosphere stimulates good conversations and at times you feel like a visionary from the 20s... Worth the experience!

Ambiance (4/5): You may have trouble finding this speakeasy if you don't do your research prior. It's located inside what looks like the entrance to an apartment. Walk in, press the buzzer, and the hostess will greet you. Once you get inside, it's dimly lit with old school charm. My only complaint. No A/C and uncomfortable chairs. Service (4/5): At a speakeasy, you expect elevated service. And it was good here. Our waiter answered our questions, made recommendations, and had a good sense of humor. When he was asked what a popular cocktail is in Germany, he said beer. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet, and I don't think they have food anyway. Drinks (4/5): They have a long list of craft cocktails which is a plus. What I look for at a speakeasy is creativity and an interesting blend of flavors. While some of the options on their menu are basic cocktails, there are some interesting ones, too. The one I had, while the name is escaping me, had a nice fruity and refreshing profile. One of the coolest bars I checked out in Frankfurt. Prost!

Don't shame me for doing this but a colleague highly recommended the cheeseburger. So, I had to try it and it didn't disappoint. Big patty, tasty thick bacon, and great bun and sauce. Better than some U.S. places hands down. The coleslaw was excellent (but small portion). Fries weren't bad but again, small portion. Son had the wienerschnitzel. Huge portion but thin pounded cut so it wasn't that big that you couldn't finish it. Potatoe/cucumber salad was delish. On the expensive side but worth a second visit.

She recommended Apfelwein Wagner so we stopped by for dinner. Ambiance (5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The building in which it is housed has some awesome art on the exterior. Once you get inside, there's an open air area that makes you feel like you're outside but your'e actually inside. I recommend sitting here. It's lively and the design is awesome. In the back of the restaurant, you'll find an indoor area. Service (2.5/5): European service tends to be lackluster, but our service experience was a little below even that standard. We had to track our waiter down several times. Overall, quite slow. Drinks (4/5): If you can't tell by the name, Apfelwein Wagner specializes in apple wine. The largest size is served in beautiful handmade blue and white carafes. I personally am not a fan of apple wine, but it's definitely worth trying. Instead, I went with a beer or two. You can't go wrong with that in Germany. Food (3/5): They have several schnitzels (different meats) served with potatoes and green sauce (another Frankfurt specialty). You can't really mess this one up. Solid from the thin breaded cutlet to the potatoes and the green sauce made from a bunch of different herbs. My girlfriend at the other time, ordered some ribs and they were a big dud. They were rare, highly chewy, and highly fatty. She couldn't finish her meal and I don't blame her. So a bit of a hit and a miss. Apfelwein Wagner is a popular spot and I'm glad I checked it out. I'd come for the drinks and the ambiance. rather than the food though.
