We worked with John Nevolo to purchase our first home in '19 when he was employed at Jersey Mortgage and he locked us in at 5%. In '19. Our credit scores were excellent, no debt/loans. At the time we were mid-twenties, 1st time buyers, and thought this was a good deal because we listened to him. He screwed us in retrospect. We liked him, he had this used car salesman-type charm but also kept making parallels between us and what him and his wife did when they were our age. It was heartfelt-we fell for it. We ended up refinancing down to 3% shortly thereafter with the company John sold our loan to. Skip to Spring '24. Rates are around 8%. We have a baby and getting the itch to start looking. We finally had an offer accepted in Sept '24. Rates are now ~6%. We figured we'd give John another chance, he was now at NJLenders and he told us he had more flexibility. It wasn't a good decision, here's why: John repeatedly asked us to buy points, despite the fact John and the rest of the USA knew rates were coming down. Our final straw was when John called us to give us another 'offer' - buy down your rate from 6% to 5.675 for $9K. An absolute and utter sham. Oh and per John - you have 3 hours to think about it and I can 'lock it in'. This is one day before rates plummeted and this was the third time John tried persuading us to buy down points for astronomical amounts. It was at this point that me and my said uh oh - this guy is trouble. After the $9K offer, we asked our realtor to share his lender. When we told John why we even considered calling a different lender (because of the $9K sham) and tried being candid with him out of respect, he admitted that the $9K offer was 'a bad deal' and he 'wouldn't have taken that either'. Who wants to do business with someone like this? When we came to John to tell him the other lender offered us 5.75% clean-no points to buy down- he started with 'oh, you don't have time, you both work and that lender is likely adding hidden fees to make up for the lower rate.' FALSE. We compared the 2 loan estimates- it wasn't true. A few days go by. He calls us again, extremely pushy. Saying he will lock us in at 5.85. No points. Where did that come from? Why do we get the best he could do this late in the game? It was still higher than what we got from the other lender. We said no thank you, ended the call amicably. We tell him via email to withdraw our loan. As a last ditch effort he's really pulling for straws now - he tells my husband to ask our REALTOR to buy down points. His reasoning is the realtors are the ones that are making the money! I am not sure at this juncture if this man is sane and can't understand how he has been doing this for 30 years. I am insulted that he thinks we are this inept. We said no thanks, close our file, and ended the call amicably. During this entire process things were said that didn't sit right with me. One of them is a true issue I feel obligated to provide to anyone thinking about working with NJ Lenders, solely because they employ him, and John Nevolo himself as he is licensed in the state of NJ. When we were speaking to John and he was scrambling, stuttering, trying his absolute best to sell his 'deals' he tells us that only a small percentage of people shop around for lenders and he said as an example, he couldn't stand dealing with Indians because that's all they do is shop around for mortgage rates and that they are the worst to work with because of this, he'd rather not even be bothered. That's ALARMING. The reason why I'm taking the time to write this review is because I was pushed way too far at the end and here is why. When you switch lenders, you have to get the appraisal transferred if the appraisal has already been done. Usually this is a simple process. After following up for 3 days, John was not agreeable to transferring the appraisal to us and tells us via text to buy another one with our new lender. I absolutely lost my mind. I was so angry at this point after all of the things this man had tried to do to us while we maintained respect for him. I called him and told him how disgusted I was by him and his dealings. A person can only be pushed so far. Thankfully, our new lender used to work for NJ Lenders and knew the owners and was able to get the appraisal transferred but - WOW. It was discovered that John didn't even ask the right people at NJ Lenders for the appropriate protocol for transferring appraisal. He wasn't even trying. After attempting to screw us so many times again and again, this guy right up until the bitter end just couldn't manage to do the right thing. John has likely screwed enough people and he is so close to retirement now that I'm not sure he genuinely cares which makes him even more dangerous and predatory. I hope this review serves as an example and saves others from the headache my husband and I endured. If John did it to us twice, he'll do it to you. read more

My original call with a team at NJ Lenders was great. But when I needed to begin a process to actually pre-qualify for a mortgage and have a discussion about what I could afford, they weren't available to run numbers and have that discussion, even after they ran my credit. It took 4 days and still couldn't get a phone call from them. They were never available when I called them, either I'm sure that my purchase price was lower than most of their clients and I don't know if that was the cause for the slow response from both of them. Here's why you shouldn't use NJ Lenders. We started our refinancing with Amanda Merkle in October of 2020. Submitted all the requested documents and were pre-approved (yes, I know that means nothing). We were told it could take 3 months. More and more documents were requested and all were given. We spent $500 on PNL reports that were actually never used. Amanda made some errors in reading our tax returns. It took her a long time, which means the info given, is now outdated. She's 4 months in now and can't get it done, so she brought in Angelo Lefer. It's now February. He requested more current info and now wanted 2020 returns. I explained that my personal taxes don't get done until October due to all my K1's and investments. Angelo said, get me the business 2020 and you're done. I'll push it through in 3 days and give you a credit for all the errors. We waited until the state allowed the returns to be done in mid February. The return was submitted immediately. We get a congratulations from Joseph Chiarella. Of course that came with more requests. We're now 5 months in! Joseph requests my 2020 returns. I again explained that they can't be done until October. He requests more statements and bank activity. I download from Chase and where that was accepted before, he now wants me to walk into chase and have EVERY page signed and stamped. At this point, I know we're not getting anywhere and that congratulations you're done email, was a pacifier. I did go to Chase and I got EVERY page signed and stamped. I reached out to my accountant and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Going on 6 months with no end in sight, here's what was explained to me. HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULDN'T USE NJ LENDERS: NJ Lenders does not give you the money, they're brokers (this I knew). They don't have a buyer and they are buying time. None of my financials have changed. If we were approved as we were told, there was no change to now not be approved. I asked Joseph to tell me what changed and there was no response. All he said, is that he can not do our loan without our 2020 personal taxes. I asked how an October 2020 application could require a document that is not yet due by the government. He gave no response. The advise I got was that you should ALWAYS go to the lender directly. NJ Lenders made several mistakes, lied several times and in the end did not have the ability to get a mortgage for us. Reading the bad reviews, maybe they don't have good relationships with the banks? They wasted 6 months and demanded I spend money on PNL reports that were never needed or used. In the end, they had no response after all that time and having us submit document after document was just to buy them time, to find a lender. Had they just been honest, that they didn't have a buyer, we could have gone right to the banks and had this done. Of course, we are doing that now, but they have no problem lying and stringing you along. The banks are competitive with the rates and can have the process done quicker. Stay far away from NJ Lenders! We also reached out to the owner Steven Grossman. No response. Just blocked us. FYI, in order to write a review on NJ Lender's site, they need to approve you first. So I wouldn't trust their reviews as they are picking and choosing who can review. read more

If I could give them zero stars, I would. Dealing with their organization during the pandemic on a refinance was one of the worst five month experiences I have ever gone through from a customer service perspective with any organization in my life. However, I was able to work with my original mortgage broker a year later, get a refinance closed in two weeks, and take the holding of my mortgage out of the hands of NJ Lenders and into a more serviceable agency, so that NJ Lenders cannot continue to profit off of their lack of motivation to execute their business for their customers. I don't recommend them by any means; go and find yourself a reputable mortgage broker that handles your business in a timely fashion!! read more

I have tried to refinance my mortgage since October and have received the runaround. The customer service I have received is absolutely the worst I have experienced from any industry. I messaged the Owner, Steven Grossman and after my first message my ability to send further messages to him and my message capabilities have been disabled. The required items keep changing and the finish line keeps moving further and further. We have lost 1000s of dollars in wasted time and money. We have gone to other professionals in the industry and they say NJ Lenders requests are out of the ordinary. Mind you, we have had a mortgage over 2 years and never have had an issue. I don't normally leave reviews, but I feel that this needs to be said. I do agree with what another person wrote that NJ Lenders does have good, competitive rates, but they are the absolute worst to deal with. We started the process of a refinance back in July and after months of never hearing any updates I asked what was the hold up and how much longer it was going to be. All I ever got were constant excuses of why it was taking so long. It got to the point that I couldn't wait any more for them to pick up their dragging feet, and told them exactly how I felt about it. Well, after that discussion apparently, it was able to get done and we received our official closing date in January. Oh, but that wasn't the end. It had been two weeks (at the very least) since they told us about the closing date, and the night before we were supposed to close I NEVER heard anything about how the closing was going to be conducted. The day of the closing, my husband and I were bombarded with e-mail after e-mail requesting so a ton of documents that needed to be resubmitted. So, you're telling me that this couldn't have been checked WAY before the closing date??? Well, due to their incompetence, our closing didn't happen the way it was supposed to because even though we sent them all their documents they needed last minute they still didn't submit the information until one hour before we were supposed to close! Also, the closing costs through this company are beyond ridiculous! I feel that the rates may look good, but let me tell you, they get you with the closing costs. This was the biggest headache I have ever experienced, and I will NEVER do anything with this company again. No matter how good the rates my look, I would rather take my business somewhere else to a company I know I can trust and depend on to get stuff done in a timely fashion and not make excuse after excuse about things. If I were you, I would definitely consider other options before looking into this one to save your time and money. UPDATE: Had our closing today, and surprise surprise, had to write a check for over $1,000 for the closing costs that were supposed to be included in the closing already because the calculations that NJ Lenders sent over were not right. Seems to be a common theme with these people. I will never recommend this company to anyone. read more

While NJ Lenders offers good rates, they are highly unprofessional, disorganized, and lax with client information. Below is a laundry list of the many issues we had in dealing with them. Some of which pretty egregious in my mind... * Sent grossly incorrect Closing Disclosure. After two requests to fix, asked that we sign anyway, of which I refused. Kept pushing for me to sign, even had a conversation in which they claimed it was ILLEGAL for them to edit the CD, and doing so would result in starting the loan process from scratch. After that unpleasant conversation, I got en e-mail saying they would update.. so had to request four times for them to fix * Violated the CFPA by not sending a loan estimate before we committed (https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-is-a-loan-estimate-en-1995/). To be fair, breaking this law seems to be very common practice with mortgage companies, and most will try to avoid sending a Loan Estimate. * Sent detailed information about another borrower's loan and documents to myself, my lawyer, my real estate agent, and my title company. This was a mistake, but it shows how lax they are with client information. * CC'd my real estate agent e-mail containing detailed personal financial information without permission. * Constantly sent spam e-mails and texts that have nothing to do with the status of our loan, many of which actually confuse loan process. For example, I got at least three different e-mails staying I was approved(weeks apart), no clue why. Got another one which was a reminder to send over the signed commitment letter almost two weeks after signing it? * Poorly communicated the status of missing documents, which were almost always positioned as last-minute emergencies instead of simple requests. Several of which may have been genuinely been my fault but many of which were not known in advance. read more

I had a good experience at the time and was provided a good rate. However, two things have bugged me following the closing. One is that NJ Lenders said they would send me a gift after my closing and I never got it. I told them it never came and they said they would send me it again, but they never did and I never heard from them again. I just got ghosted. I would've rather never been told there was a gift so I wouldn't have been looking forward to it. The other thing, which annoys me much more, is that they sell your information. I get junk mail from the post office about once a week from various Home Warranty companies and Mortgage Refinancing companies. All of the papers reference NJ Lenders. They typically say "we are not affiliated with NJ Lenders" but yet all say things like "Dear NJ Lenders customer." So it's very obvious my information was sold by them which annoys me. read more

Would give zero stars if I could. Communication with this company is horrible. After weeks of requesting documents over and over again to get submitted for loan approval, was told it was getting submitted for the underwriter. Email back after that to get a time frame on how long that usually takes, few days past, tried emailing again and calling with no answers in sight. Its almost 5 weeks on now and still heard nothing from the company, not even an email to say the documents were submitted for underwriting. Mortgage rates have been going up week after week and this company couldn't care less about you wanting to buy a home. Buying a house is stressful enough, you want to believe you can trust your mortgage banker. Bob Veech, the director of FHA lending at NJ Lenders, was the nicest person initially on the phone -- promising me a seamless experience and quick recast of my loan after the sale of my current primary residence (so I could buy down the loan with the proceeds from my not-yet-sold primary residence and would not have to pay the crazy-high interest rates associated with the initial loan.) Based on these assurances, we went with NJ Lenders. Long story short -- we ended up having to delay our closing because they were not organized enough to meet our closing date and even more upsetting, the recast never happened. Their priorities were clear, it was not the interests of their clients -- it is only in their commissions. I have been itching to review NJ Lenders for months now. Months because that is how long it had taken them to get me a loan nowhere near their promised timeframe with terrible customer service and not to mention caused me to go through the following: -Default on my contract, thus; -Almost lose my 20% down deposit. -Be homeless given I had transferred my lease on my then current apartment as I was supposed to close 2 weeks prior (my closing date was pushed out 3 more times that month after I was contracted to close.) -Sob hysterically almost every night because of the above. When I first began working with NJ Lenders in August 08, they promised me they would have a loan "no problem" in the 1 month time frame stipulated by the co-op board; thus, I stupidly chose them over going directly through my bank because I thought I'd get a better rate with a smoother process to boot. Boy, was I wrong. A month turned into 2 months and countless back and forth on items I had already sent to them (that then just disappeared or could not be found) or frantic phone calls from them for items they never, ever requested in the first place. I was so far past my deadline, the seller was ready to put the apartment back on the market until I suppose the idea they wouldn't get commission finally made NJ Lenders get their act together and get me the guarantor letter I needed to submit to the co-op board for my interview. Now I understand requirements change from bank to bank so that last minute requests can happen, and I'm also not naive enough to be oblivious to the fact that there was a credit crisis going on but again, I had started the process months before and was promised a loan. NJ Lenders professional conduct let alone complete disregard for me as a client was shocking. If there were issues locking in an underwriter (which clearly there were), don't tell me everything is going to be "OK". Walk me through what you need; what the issues are and what my options are. Also, get a back-up plan. My lawyer was the one who locked in Countrywide (ironically the bank I had opted out of using in lieu of NJ Lenders) who worked with me within one week to get me a loan with a better rate so I wouldn't lose my deposit. Isn't that supposed to be your job? Oh, and funnily enough, despite telling them what I thought of them, I still get calls from NJ Lenders asking if I want to re-finance. From our first conversations, David was helpful, patient in answering questions, clear, accurate and responded very quickly to all communications. He delivered exactly what was expected with no surprises along the way. Our job was to send the requested documents in a timely fashion and David and his team took care of the rest. The only small hiccup in the process was when one the team members requested numerous documents a second time that had already been sent. Once that was pointed out, the problem was quickly rectified and had no material impact on the delivery of the mortgage. We chose H.O.M.E. Mortgage Bankers/N.J. He kept us informed and up-to-date on all the confusing details involved in this process. He really went through the whole process with us and coached us on the right type of financing for us. The processor kept loosing my paperwork which led them to have to hold up my closing twice !! Our broker didn't show up to closing and was hands off after we began the process even though we mentioned his processor was not responsive and loosing our paperwork and was causing a lot delays. NJ Lenders offers good rates but my experience with the agent Christopher Galo was worst, he say yes for everything and he does not keep his word. Got me a rate of 2.875 and started process then rates went down upon sending a request in email he agreed to do 2.75, after waiting more than 90days when the closing date came he said he cannot obey the rate he promised. He is the most unprofessional lender i ever dealt with. I cancelled my application and went to Better.com where i close my load in less than 40 days. read more

I've held off on writing a public review of our experience with NJ Lenders in hopes that they would do something to improve our experience but they've actually only made it worse so here it goes. NJ Lenders have made major mistakes at every step of the process with our loan with them (we worked with Justin Bonura, Pinar Gulu, and Michael Kelly) causing months of delays and additional costs. They have been very difficult to get a hold of when we've emailed and called, only responding after maybe the 3rd/4th follow-up. When they do finally respond, they probably only answer half the questions that were asked, which results in us having to further follow-up with them. After many months of delays, our loan finally closed in mid-February only to learn in March that they sold the loan to another lender (this is fine and we understand this is done regularly). However, the new lender seems to have no record of our loan, therefore our contractor, who started renovations when the loan closed in Feb, is not able to get his first disbursement. NJ Lenders said it should have only taken a few weeks after closing for the contractor to get paid and have apologized yet again for another mistake (among the many they've already made). We've received emails from various NJ Lender employees admitting their mistakes (even the owner, Glenn Durr) but they continue making them. PLEASE DO NOT TRUST YOUR LOAN PROCESS WITH THEM AS IT WILL BE A COSTLY MISTAKE. read more

IT HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE WORKING WITH THEM. After we submitted our paperwork to them a month before closing, we were told there would be no issues with underwriting. We followed up with them everyday and every other day: "Are there any underwriting issues? Anything we can do?" We told them that the seller WOULD NOT grant any extensions, and they reassured me that they did not foresee any issues and that everything would be alright. THREE DAYS BEFORE CLOSING, they re-pull our credit, only to find out there was an administrative error with one of the credit bureaus (thus causing issues with their underwriting). It was a minor issue that could've been handled weeks before closing (one of the credit bureau failed to update their system with my wife's married name and had her maiden name instead). WHY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH WOULD A MORTGAGE COMPANY TELL US THIS 3 DAYS BEFORE CLOSING!?!?! By that point, we'd already paid for an inspection, CCO cert, lawyer fees and taken off countless days from work to get ready for this purchase. The outcome? The seller sent us a termination notice for the sale. We lost the home, and the money we spent on preparing for the purchase - we'll never see again. I'd read terrible reviews before using them, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since the realtor highly recommended them (and our lawyer has worked with them in the past). WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T USE THESE PEOPLE! There are SO many other lenders out there who won't oversell their services only to under-deliver miserably in the end. read more

I don't want to say names but they gave me false hopes and after appraisal that took 2 weeks i had to wait another few weeks just to find out I'm denied because of something mortgage guy overlooked with his team, It took me losing $3,000.00 to find out I am not approved. It's necessary to separate the home buying process from the companies that deal with those processes. Starting out like Wil Smith: here's the situation. A lot of mortgage companies and banks wrecked the economy, and consumers eagerly went along. Blame HGTV, greed, or stupidity..in the end there is a situation much like the former convict who becomes a monk: it's an act of guilt not faith. As we all know from watching The biggest loser, or visits with our mother in laws, guilt doesn't work as a motivator..our monk will resent the self imposed good behavior. For the responsible borrower, this means the home buying process requires 1.) Phone call during work hours 2.) Enough money to pay closing costs, down payments, lawyers, inspectors, appraisers, land surveyors, astrologers (okay, I made that last one up...I think..it's all a blur) 3.) Enough time to get all the paperwork together Home buying is, obviously then, the activity someone who works all the time (so can presumably pass the test) but has enough free time to get it done...brilliant. I am young and tell people my age: don't invest in a house..invest in stocks, the circus, you brother in law's rock album, anything...you are guaranteed more success and more fun. And you will be richer. So, dear reader, if you take my advice above, you can become wealthy and donate your wealth to me the foolish home buyer. If you do not, then NJ Lenders is the way to go. Good people dealing with Dantes Inferno (if you would have taken my advice above you could be enjoying a disco inferno, but you couldn't listen could you?). I may close on my house; I may not, I may just live in some existential space surrounded by boxes representing failed dreams..but I won't blame NJ Lenders..those hosts of home flippers though..they deserve a punch in the nose. read more

I would like to give NO starts. One of the worst and stressful experiences I have ever had. Sandy Davis, the senior loan officer, and her team, had no idea of what they were doing. After promising everything to be ready for the closing day, she kept postponing for a whole week, there was always something missing and she never took responsibility of her job - she blamed me for the delay - not an exceptional customer service as she write in her business card. Her team could never answer a question, it is always the responsibility of somebody else. I felt pretty miserable during the whole process. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Great mortgage process. Refinanced my Monmouth county home in a few short weeks. Definitely will recommend them to my friends and family.

In short, I would avoid using this company if you want to prevent months of stress, frustration and minimal information on the status of your loan. It took just short of 4 months to finally get approval on a USDA home loan when we received an initial estimate of 6 weeks. (We understood from the beginning that the USDA loan would have stricter rules and may take a bit longer than a traditional loan, but the significant delay was not because of the USDA.) Three out of the 4 times that we had to postpone the closing date was because NJ Lenders hadn't even sent our application to USDA for final approval, or when they did and it bounced back due to missing/incomplete documentation. Numerous times I was asked by the processor and the underwriter for documentation I had already sent at least twice before. It also got to the point that I had to re-send updated bank statements, payment stubs, etc. because they were considered 'outdated' which again shows how long this process took. Getting straight answers and updates on the progress of our mortgage was like pulling teeth. I have countless emails of vague responses saying "they're working on it" with no other details. If we weren't persistent in questioning the status of our loan on a regular basis, we would've been completely in the dark on what was going on for the last month and a half. Don't expect any update unless you constantly call and email, and even then don't expect sufficient info. Then on the day we were supposed to close, we waited around ALL DAY for NJ Lenders to send the closing documents packet, and they never did, so my boyfriend and I wasted a day off from work for nothing. When we called our loan officer, furious about the situation, she (incorrectly) told us the packet had been sent at 3pm that day. We had to notify her that a member of her closing dept. blamed a power outage at the end of the day on his inability to complete the packet in time - so we knew more about the situation than our own loan officer did. It yet again took half the day the following day before we got the green light to meet for closing. After threatening to file a complaint with the better business bureau, expressing our frustration with the corporate manager, and even reaching out to the USDA directly to find out info on our loan status, we did receive some compensation from NJ Lenders towards our closing costs. However, now our first payment is due on Nov. 1, and we never received a statement or instructions on where to send our payment (I'm writing this on 10/26/16). I had to email them and ask for it electronically, which they don't do apparently. They claim to have years of experience and that customer service is their #1 priority, but our experience did not resemble anything close to that. read more
