I brought my mom's jewelry in for an informal appraisal, not looking to sell anything. I had a sense that the jewelry wouldn't be worth much, but I wanted to know more about each piece so I could share that information so the family recipients could make their own decisions about the piece they inherited.
The man working there was only interested in the value of gold, didn't care about the stones or settings, told me I should sell all of the gold pieces. He then broke a piece while trying to determine if it was real gold - no apologies. Of course it was the most valuable piece in her collection.
Adding insult to injury, his parting words were something along the lines of that it was a shame this is all my mom had to show for a lifetime of jewelry.
