Badrutt's Palace Hotel

$$$$
We stayed at the Badrutt's Palace as part of my milestone birthday plans with my girlfriends…read more I'm sad to say, Badrutt's Palace turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the trip. We spent about 7,500 CHF for two connecting rooms for two nights in the basic category rooms. And these are the reasons why I am giving the Badrutt's one star: - When we arrived, at about 330pm we were told one of our rooms were not ready, because of a 'technical issue'. The official check in time was 3pm. They told us to expect the room to be ready by 530pm. Meanwhile, they offered us "complimentary tea at the Grand Hall". - The complimentary tea turned out to be a frame of small bites that was too little for the three of us, so we ordered one club sandwich and also some water. We were charged for the sandwich and water which turned out to be 75CHF. - At 530pm we went up to check into the room that was ready, as the connecting one still wasn't ready yet. It turned out that the 'technical issue' were guests who hadn't checked out. I saw the service staff cramming clothes and belongings into bags while they tried to clear out the room. - The rooms were really small. This I had heard and I thought it was acceptable considering the location of the hotel. What I did not expect was the general shabbiness of the place. Furnishings looked worn and tired. And the carpet wasn't clean. I do my nightly stretches on the carpet, and found myself cheek to cheek to some dirt / soil. I was hoping that it came from the last guest in their hurry to check out and not some vintage dirt from winter 2022. - For the next two days, we found the staff generally distracted and too busy to attend to us, whether it be a request for a kettle, a charger, soft boil eggs at breakfast, water to the table or an ice pack. Things either never materialized or you needed to remind them three times before they arrived. - On the last day of our stay, I encountered a small crash on the slopes and tore my ACL. After making it back to the hotel, I called the front office to inform them about the injury, and potential need for alternative arrangements for dinner. Their reply was, "There will be a cancellation policy of 200CHF per person if you decide to cancel dinner" - I wasn't prepared to pay 600CHF for no dinner and to mooch in a small room so I said I will go ahead with dinner, but could I please have a wheelchair to bring me to dinner. They said, of course we will bring it up immediately. We waited 1.5 hours for the wheelchair which never materialized. Finally I hobbled to the front desk to find out they had "lost the wheelchair". I was puzzled why we were not informed any earlier. I feel extremely cheated out of what I thought was going to be a luxury experience. We are not un-used to paying high prices for 5-star accommodations but for this price, this level of service and general standards of the property are unacceptable.

The spa/bains area is extensive and immaculate. There were 9 rooms and several relaxation areas as well both indoor and outdoor. Gorgeous pool which is also well sized. The breakfast is really well done. All the indulgent options (bread pudding, bacon) and healthy options (fresh juices with ingredients of your choosing, poached eggs). Concierge is very helpful for hikes, tours. The e-bike was so much fun to take around the town and neighboring silvaplana. Only downside was any request sourcing from the front desk seemed to get lost in translation to Housekeeping, not sure why but it happened 3 times. Second, aware it's a mountain town, but it was hot..our room was too stuffy and only way to cool down was to open the windows. However we faced the front so it wasn't feasible due to noise. Lastly, we didn't really conduct our research on location, but note the Kempinski is at the edge of town, so it wasn't as convenient to simply walk everywhere like at the other well known properties. There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel.

The rooms are functional and a plus is certainly the huge closet with plenty of hangers (one of my pet peeves is that a lot of hotels have about three hangers, where are you supposed to hang your clothes) plus the big full length mirrors with good day light. I absolutely love the breakfast room with view on the frozen lake and the selection is quite good. The quality of the food in the buffet is great and I love you can have your eggs cooked by the chef. But most importantly the service is always great, the team is always friendly and willing to help. Only downside I would say that it get's pricey on busy weekends and that the room has no iron (but they offer reasonable priced and quick iron service in house). Would recommend!

Crystal Hotel

Staff was nominally helpful and certainly tried to be helpful, but we had so many issues that we…read moreended up giving them only a two-star rating. Let us list the defects: 1. Room was consistently HOT at night, mostly due to warm sun on the west wall on our floor. Sadly, the only way to cool it off was to open the windows (no ceiling fan), which then meant we were effectively "sleeping on the sidewalk" with every drunk noisemaker, truck, and car sound coming right into the room. No or very poor quality sleep makes for cranky guests. 2. Among other issues, our bathroom door would not latch (stuck latch, and missing screw). Staff came to fix, but didn't actually have a fix . . . and it never got addressed despite a promise to return, and a nearly two week stay. Unexpectedly poor service for a supposedly 4-star hotel. 3. Bathroom exhaust fan was on some "automated" schedule, according to the same repair staff. Thus, it exhausts fumes from the bathroom whenever it feels like it. Really?!? 4. Our included breakfast was EXACTLY the same breakfast--for nearly two weeks. Not only does that get old really fast, for those with an environmentally sound, no animal, lifestyle, the massive number of meat, animal milk/cheese items, and VERY limited number of vegan items, suggest it's still 1970 at this hotel. Just jaw-dropping at how far behind the times some can be. (Amazingly, most F&B managers have no clue on this--see the UN FAO report from many years ago for details: cowspiracy.com/facts.) 5. No pool or hot tub was sort of a downer, but this is likely an older facility/building? In closing, while the staff was pleasant and tried to be helpful, this hotel is far, far behind the times. Recommend you look elsewhere if you expect 4-star standards and have any sort of concern about the environment. Sadly, this St. Moritz hotel just feels way, way behind the times.
