This is one of the few places to eat in DeSmet, particularly on a Saturday afternoon. The only…read moreother choices were the Subway and the Dairy Queen across the street. The menu is diner food with burgers, a Ruben, fish and shrimp baskets, chicken dinners, etc. we had burgers and an egg salad sandwich. Our food was good and our server was nice. The iced tea was giant but good and refreshing on a 90-degree day. The crowd was a mix of locals and French-speaking tourists.

Unfortunately, Dairy Queen = CLOSED. Subway = CLOSED. Other than the two gas stations, this is…read moreabout your only option, and you better be starving or on death's door to consider the place. Took my grandsons there this week and met by the ambivalent, unsmiling, bland young waitress with braids who looked like she would rather be pulling slivers out of her eyes instead of working for a few bucks. The food is the only thing that bumped this up to two stars, but it was mediocre at best. The 'Steak and Eggs' consisted of a 6oz ribeye that was maybe 3/8" thick. Why she bothered asking how we wanted it done is beyond me. It would be impossible to find a scale of rare to well done because anything more than 30 seconds on the grill would be burnt (it was that thin). No utensils and Miss Smiley was quick to chastise my 8-year-old grandson when I asked him to get some pre-wrapped ones from the counter. I told her that I was the one that sent him. Still ended up stirring my coffee with a knife. Eggs were fair; hash browns fair; bacon fair; sausage fair. Six of us eating breakfast and the bill was just a few dollars shy of $100. The 'Steak and Eggs' price is $18.95 and you're a fool if you pay that much. I was...twice. Let's talk about the 'ambiance' and the walls that are physically PEELING paint, the wobbly tables, the torn benches/seats and the overall filth in the place. This needs a John Tapper 'Restaurant Rescue' and he would probably turn and walk out again. Please, please tell your young waitress to get a personality and learn how to smile or she is going to be one miserable person to be around and live with for the next 60 years.

Wards is a very charming little place with a limited menu and small gift shop. Nice seating…read moreoutside. They serve American as well as espresso coffee. The people who work there are very friendly and helpful. However, we can't recommend the breakfast buffet. The eggs were made from powder the hash browns were soggy and we had to pay extra for biscuits. The lunch menu looks great but we haven't tried it yet. No vegan or vegetarian options that I could see.

Although the breakfast menu is small, everything on it was absolutely delicious. My kids ordered fresh toast (made with HOMEMADE wheat bread) and the ham & cheese omelette. I've never seen my kids eat so quickly! They said - "this is the best french toast ever!" and "I love these eggs I love these eggs I love these eggs!" I would agree - I had the breakfast sandwich with HOMEMADE wheat bread and it was gone within seconds - delicious! Many locals were also inside enjoying their coffee - you could tell they come here often. The prices were reasonable, the donuts were light and fluffy, the friendly staff was attentive and the coffee was quite good too. If you're in town to see the Ingalls sites, be sure to stop in, you won't be disappointed.
