So, limited options, but I would recommend going even if it's a movie you've already seen. It's an experience. The building is old and visiting the theater is honestly like stepping back in time. It was built in the 1930's. You buy your tickets at the small window outside (with cash!) and enter into the one-room theater. OK, everything is dated, and not fancy like the mega-plex theater you are used to, but it is soooo cool! We go to see a movie here almost every time we visit Tryon and my kids think it is a real treat. The concession stand in behind the theater seating, so if you need to get up for a snack you can keep watching the movie, that's cool. The bathrooms are teeny-tiny, which is kind of neat, and has never been a problem with long lines. This past week we saw the Lego Movie. Which came out in regular theaters around December maybe? So it takes a few months for movies to get here. Despite that they still charge $8 a ticket, which seems a bit steep for a movie that has been out so long, but I figure the cost of operating this place in a small town must be pretty high, so I'm ok with that. Overall, cool, cool theater. If you are in the area I highly recommend it.

When they became available, my wife researched the terms for the visit and feeling comfortable with their requirements due to Covid-19, purchased the tickets. It cost her almost $100. The day before the event, she got an email stating that a negative result from a rapid test is necessary to attend or proof of all vaccinations. There was no mention of this on their FB page, only that masks are required. I told her to just get a refund, but she discovered the tickets are nonrefundable. How convenient for TFAC. We love our little town of Tryon, but TFAC sux!

Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

We spent almost a year touring preschools in Los Angeles and then almost another year getting accepted into one of the best ones, which was in extremely high demand. In Asheville, there were fewer options comparatively. We toured several schools that had been highly regarded by different friends but as soon as we went to Roots + Wings School of Art and Design and met Ginger Huebner, the founding director, we were sold. The school was not only the perfect fit for our 3 year old and our family, but after attending a semester, it easily exceeded the ridiculously hard to get into school we were excited to attend in Los Angeles. Roots + Wings is a beautiful blend of creative art driven education with just the right amount of structure, set in a truly wonderful space to learn and grow. Throughout his first semester at Roots and Wings, our son grew so much - emotionally and intellectually. By giving him a comfortable and positive space to explore art and his surroundings, he learned problem solving, interpersonal skills with other children and teachers, and became much more independent. Most importantly, he had a blast doing it all. When we picked him up from school, he was always so excited to show and tell us all the amazing things they'd done that day. The kids created incredible art projects, had animals in the classroom, played music and had plenty of outdoor time. Our teachers were incredible - it's clear that Ginger is very careful when selecting who will be working at her school. The classrooms themselves are also beautiful. Tons of natural light fill every corner, the design and choice of every element in their classroom from the furniture to the wall colors to the flooring is spot on. Roots + Wings feels like a school you'd read about in Sweden (to be fair, the décor at Roots and Wings is Scandinavian modern). Ginger beautifully conceived our end-of-semester celebration, with all the kids artwork and projects elegantly displayed and a sweet and poignant ceremony. Overall we couldn't be happier with Roots + Wings and if you're looking for a creatively stimulating environment with just the right amount of structure for your preschool aged kids, I'm sure you'll love Roots + Wings as well.
