The Olive Tree - Seafood paella (?)

While the staff was friendly and our wine decent, we found the food very lacking. The spaghetti with meat sauce could have been prepared out of a can and Tesco packet, and the seafood paella (for two) was almost unrecognizable; basically cooked riced with tomato sauce and a few bits of what appear to be canned clams and a couple pieces of calamari. We tried a couple of bites but found it inedible and left. On the plus side, great view of the Castle tower outside.

We'd been forced to travel by coach due to industrial actions with rail travel and it was a bit of a slog. We'd arrived in York early evening and checked into our Airbnb. We decided to walk toward the city centre to check it out, after walking around for quite some time, as we approached the York Castle, we noticed The Olive Tree restaurant across the street from the castle. It was about 6:00 pm and the restaurant was nearly empty. The hostess seated us quickly. We ordered the Bruschetta and the Avocado with Prawns for starters and they were both very good. We had the Spaghetti Bolognese and two specials; Italians Sausage Pasta and a broiled fish dish. The food was absolutely fantastic! We'd had little in the way of expectations as we were really just looking to grab a bite (after ploughing through M & S sandwiches and Walker's Crisps on the six-hour coach journey) to fill us up before heading back to the flat. We found both the service and the food to be well-beyond our expectations -and, we noticed that food delivery services were continually coming to the restaurant during the time we were there, suspect most of the establishment's business may now be for take away.

The menu didn't have a huge variety but I find that usually a good thing as gives more concentration and focus on dishes. I had enjoyed some mussels the other night so had them as a main here and my partner ordered a chicken wrapped in ham. To supplement this a house salad was ordered. The food did take a while to arrive but I thoroughly enjoyed mine but glancing at partner's it did look uninspiring and dry. Jealously we glanced at a lady who had ordered and epic looking pasta dish which she exclKmed was the best thing she had eaten in a long time lol I really think it is sometimes pot luck aka on what you order. The ice cream to finish was lovely in kinder, strawberry and vanilla. Overall nice atmosphere but could feel the staff under pressure .

Thankfully we happened on Cosa Nostra, a large multilevelled Italian restaurant on Church Street and they had a table free! Shown to the upper levels of the restaurant, it was a good place to relax away from the hustle and bustle on a busy May evening. The menu had a decent variety of traditional and more unusual dishes from pizza to pasta, fish dishes to calzone. Not feeling at our most ravenous, we opted for two standard dishes, linguini carbonara and linguini ragu, washed down with a pint of draught Peroni, accompanied by some garlic bread. When the dishes arrived, wow, the portions are enormous at this place! Two large bowls of pasta and a generous pizza sized portion of thin crust garlic bread. The carbonara was spot on, the creaminess of the sauce contrasted perfectly with the saltiness of the bacon, the garlic bread heavy on the garlic, as it should be and the ragu full of earthy tomato flavours. Gamely though we tried, we couldn't finish any of the components, as we both were just recovering from a cold. The head waiter was so concerned with our lack of progress, he offered to pack us up a doggy bag! Reassuring him the food was spot on, we vowed to return when our appetites renewed.
