This place was recommended by a friend. Drove 20 minutes with my child to try them. According to their page, they open at 9 am and close at 2 pm on Saturdays. We got there at 9:50 ish. There were about less than 10 people inside, that's including their staff. As soon as we entered , this lady said they are all booked up for the day. I thought no need to reserve, walk ins welcome?! So I let them get long lol Well I was told this place in Mukilteo nicks barbershop was good and only $8 OMG I have to try !!! So I made an appointment for my 6 year old and it's in a nice area easy parking and fun atmosphere!!! Great friendly neighborhood barbershop without a trace if weird Seattle politics. However, the ridiculously low price has made it impossible to book a haircut and they seem to have problems keeping barbers on staff. $12 was the price of a haircut in the 90s, I suspect they've made themselves a target for cheapskates who don't believe in tipping. Best barbershop around for men's, kid's, and women's hair!! Nic and the other workers are consistently friendly, fast, personable, and great at giving haircuts just like you want them! Although the shop is a bit out of our way, we go here for our entire family (even our out-of-state mother loves to go here) since the price and friendliness can't be beat! This is a simple female owned business, doing a great job, in a great community. Nic is a supportive, loving, and talented barber. Knows and gives back to her community, and treats everyone EVERYONE with respect. There is one particular older employee who has had her fair share of medical challenges, and smells like a smoker, that unfortunately impact her acceptance as a barber to others. However, I simply ask for or wait for someone else as there are usually upto 4 chairs going on a weekend. Haircuts are done to order, and everything is $8. I can't recommend this place enough. Overall it was a positive experience; however, I will likely be avoiding this barbershop in the future because it's not very gender inclusive which makes me uncomfortable as a non-binary, trans-masculine person. For starters, the sign on the window says that everything is 8$, but then the sign inside the shop has prices listed as Men's 8$ senior 12$ regular Women's 12$ senior 14$ regular It doesn't make sense to me why women are charged more just for being women. What if they have short hair? I exclusively go to barbershops, not salons, for short hair haircuts (and specifically so I can get short hair haircuts that aren't "pixies," but rather traditionally "male" hairstyles) and it doesn't make sense for me to be charged 14$ instead of 12$ when I have the same starting haircut a cis man might walk in having. I would really encourage Nic's Barbershop to start labeling prices in accordance with hair length, rather than gender (i.e. the "men's" haircut could be changed to haircuts for people who have hair shorter than their jaw or something like that). It's not just exclusionary but it's also a somewhat misleading marketing strategy when the appeal of coming here is the 8$ pricing. It's not the biggest deal, but I also got addressed as ma'am or otherwise misgendered multiple times by staff, and I think customer service would be improved if they made an effort to not make assumptions about people's gender identities. Again, overall the people working were very kind, and it was a good haircut, I just think this is an important thing to be thinking about. read more

I did come to Nic's a couple of times before while visiting my parents and it was usually a good experience with the barbers and all. However, today , I had a rude experience with the barber, Connie, as me and my wife came to the barbershop for a haircut. The way she proceed to cutting my hair was that she was expecting me to know what I already wanted and that I have known how do things go at the barber. I can see that she was irritated and looked at me like I was a dumb person. The problem was that I was cutting my hair for my brother in laws wedding, and I wanted it to look nice. I am not a hair person and tried to be very sensitive to how things are run. I had told her that I was from out of town visiting and tried to make small conversation to break the ice. However, her replies were usually very short and curt as if she was ready to be done with me. By the time she has finished my hair, I had my wife check my hair out to get the ok. (Happy wife happy life) Connie looked irritated when we asked to make adjustments to the hair. From what I can see in other posts, she might be the same person who other customers left a bad review about. I would recommend the owner to train her in customer service skills. Customers would usually ask the owner to fire the employee, but I will give Connie the benefit of doubt to improve herself. But she would need to held accountable for her actions as she is a representative of the business. read more

I was fortunate enough to walk in when it wasn't busy and get my haircut by Nic, what a wonderful woman. I told her about how my wife and I had just had a baby shower for our first child and that we were visiting from out of town. She congratulated me and immeaditely began giving me advice she said she was happy someone gave her once upon a time. The haircut only lasted 15 min but we chatted the whole time. I have lived in the Mukilteo area for several years and never saw a sign for 8$ haircuts until one day. I saw the sign for Nic's 8$ hair cuts so I decided to try it. Best decision I had made in a long time. Found the shop and upon entering there was Nic (the owner) and Tony ( only three chairs at the time). Nic told me it would be just a few minutes and to have a seat. As she finished up with her customer we began to chit chat and I found her to be warm, friendly and very knowledgeable. Tony was also interjecting comments and I found his humor to be very enjoyable and funny. A personality like mine. The haircut was great. Exactly what I asked for and I have been a customer every since. A lot of times Nic is busy. I have tried the other barbers and find that they have the same personality as Nic. Warm, friendly, humorous and confident in what they are doing. I always interact with Tony because we have the same course sense of humor. I think one review I read said one of them was disrespectful in an answer. I think it was just Tony being Tony with no offence meant. I love Nic's and I hope they reopen soon so I can see that they are all OK and made it through this pandemic safely. read more

My husband has gone to Nic's for a while now, and normally, he has a great experience. Today, he went in and was notified by the owner that there was a hour to hour and a half wait. He asked if there was a better time to come in (meaning different day). One of the barbers commented "Yeah, look at your watch and figure our when an hour and a half is from now and come back." My husband thanked them and walked out. They will not be receiving our business anymore with employees who talk to their customers like that. It was extremely rude!! Avoid this place. They do not have actual "barbering" skills. I had been growing my hair out for months setting up the foundation for a bun. I need help for someone to line up both lines on the sides of my head, and this lady would not listen and kept talking over me. Very loud and belligerent. The WORST hairstylist/barber I have ever been to. I wish I could remember her name. She was an older woman, which concerned me cause was afraid she would not understand what I wanted, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. The worst part I told her not to cut the back of my hair, which I had been growing for almost a year, she she literally took her clipper out and cut if off first thing. I was like "did you just cut the back of my hair?" She then says that she hadn't heard me say that, when that was the first thing I told her. I am SO BUMMED I went here and they messed up my hair that I have been working so long to grow out. NEVER again. What a horrible place. PS. this is not an actual barber shop. Girls - don't be afraid to come here - they do great women's' cuts for $8 as well! I came in on the raving recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. Parking/location - A couple blocks off 525/Mukilteo Speedway, it's tucked into a quaint town center feel with ample parking along the streets. Ambiance - Tons of sport paraphernalia and flat screen showing something sports related. In the front of the shop they've got a cafe type thing going and in the back half is the barbershop, the back wall being a garage door that rolls up. They've got about 4 or 5 chairs. Service - Very friendly, casual - FAST - about 15-20 minutes for trim and tidying up layers. It's as good as some $40 haircuts I've gotten elsewhere. I'm pretty sure they don't take reservations - just walk-in, but they are super fast, so I don't think you'd be waiting more than a few minutes. Recommendation - This is my new regular spot. Awful. I asked for a number three on the side, straight up, and a similar amount off the top. I stated specifically I didn't want the top rounded over. Nic, the barber, states 'three high' and then proceeded to give me exactly the haircut I didn't want. I have had my haircut many times, and have told other barbers the exact same thing and gotten what I wanted. I don't understand barber lingo, nor should I need to. Nic seemed more focused on a quick haircut rather than taking them time to understand what her client actually wanted. When I asked how next time to ask for the haircut I want, Nic's response felt like she thought it was my fault. Won't be back. read more

DO NOT TAKE SMALL KIDS HERE!!! I came in with my 2.5 year old son and specifically asked if they do toddler cuts and was told yes- however the lady who tried to cut my sons hair was absolutely horrendous with him. She ordered us to a chair (no greeting) and told me to remove his coat and put him in the chair. My son is shy so he was reaching out for me when she looked at me and told me he was going to need to stop. Maybe if this woman treated my son like a PERSON and introduced herself to him he might not have been so scared. She was barking orders at both of us. I looked at her and asked if she was not okay cutting kids hair because this is a pretty NORMAL response for a child when a stranger touches them without any sort of introduction. I grabbed my son out of the chair and left. I did contact the owner and she said normally she does kids haircuts, however, the staff must not be aware of this as we were told to goto this lady. I chose this place bc it is close to us and I grew up in Mukilteo and know a lot of people who have come here (and some even took their kids)- however, we won't be back nor will I recommend to anyone. read more
