Meh. Good service can't really make up for average/below average food. Doesn't matter that there's a huge quantity of it, won't be back

Tulum is a hidden gem in a rough neighbourhood. Though Tulum appears to be named after a city in…read moreMexico, it is actually a Turkish restaurant. Make a booking as it gets pretty busy on a Friday evening. Free street parking available after 5pm on a Friday night. The menu offers small and large mezze with all dishes designed for sharing. Don't let the word mezze fool you. You don't receive a platter. Dishes are small and tapas sized - even the mains. So I recommend going for the 6 courses menu. Between us, we had the following 1. Kuzu lamb - slow cooked Lamb with smoked aubergine under grilled capsicum - smoky in flavour and delicate lamb 2. Fava bean - two squares of almost cheesecake textured fava bean topped with berries, peas and some herb. Very uniquely flavoured with a slight citrus flavour. Unique. 3. Pilaf with mussels - two small mounds of deliciously flavoured Rice with mussels in some oily souplike substance. Quite buttery 4. Barramundi in yoghurt sauce. - who knew barramundi went well with yoghurt. And safrron flavoured too. Yummmmm. The food was so good that we had to try dessert. We went for the Jerusalem artichoke crumble with plum. Tasted like a cinnamon rice flavoured pudding with crumble. So many flavours and quite sweet. The Turkish coffee is quite strong and comes with some dark smooth Turkish chocolate. Service is great. Each dish is introduced and explained when it arrives. Food is served quickly. Each dish comes out one at a time giving you time to enjoy each dish. Plates are cleared after every dish; So you can enjoy the new unique flavours of each dish. Split billing provided. For bigger heavier portions I think next time my friend and I will go for the Turkish pide or the cheese dish. Fancy venue. The cocktails look delectable with great attention to detail. Definitely a great place for a date. Definitely expensive so be prepared to spend 70-80 per person excluding drinks.

It's slightly out of the way and not amongst any other nighttime restaurants, but definitely worth looking for. We started with the meat cigars and stuffed vine leaves, then shared an enormous grilled fish that was more than enough for us two hungry people, and wrapped up with baklava and yummy Turkish coffee. We enjoyed everything, except the pine nuts really overpowered the fish and after a while that was all we could taste. Even so, we had a great late-night dining experience for a reasonable price considering the quantity and quality of the food we were served. The staff were extremely friendly and did not make us feel the slightest bit rushed although we were the last to leave. I'd love to come back here with a large group some day.

Fair warning that sitting in a restaurant surrounded by these tantalising, exotic beauties definitely improved by food appreciation more than any illuminated fish tank or origami vegetable cuttings. So the food. It is amazing. Primarily because of value and only to a tiny degree less on quality. I always get the Mezza which is 30 dishes of pretty much everything Lebanese cuisine could ever have claimed to cook. I'm big enough to be a bouncer and I can never even finish half of it. The Lebanese sausages, fish with tahini sauce, chicken cinnamon rice and FILO fingers are my favourites. The coffee and dessert is as good as it gets. $42 for all u can eat and BYO for $5 a bottle. Best Lebanese restaurant I have been to anywhere in the world and with that many courses just find the ones you like and they will keep bringing it out until you're rolling on the floor begging for your mama. I knew it would be so good I deliberately planned a 3km walk there and back. Are you convinced to come here yet? I'll be back within two weeks.

I wish I had any idea what I ate but I literally just pointed at what looked good and had them dish it up. I'm going to make a guess on what I ate , here we go : izmir köfte - Turkish meatballs and potatoes, simple and sweet, packed with flavor, not spicy, awesome. Kisir - Turkish bulgur wheat, this had some spice, great flavor and my new replacement for rice, it tasted like Spanish rice with more of s kick, made with tomato, onion, and red capsicum (red bell pepper). Sarma - lamb stuffed cabbage roll, I could eat this all day, it was pretty big and was packed with rice I think, could have been more bulgur wheat and minced lamb, not gamey at all, perfect ! Börek - spinach and cheese börek is exactly what it is. Spinach and cheese inside of delicious bread. Now I might have this name wrong because I think börek is in filo dough, crispy and flaky, and this was more of a soft flatbread. Maybe Gozleme ? No idea, but I loved it. Oh ya all above cast $24.50, so much food , couldn't eat it all, definitely will have food for later. Im giving the 5 star review because this place is truly delicious. All the items I got I loved, I usually can complain about one of the items and I can't and woon this one. Also the lady who helped me was super sweet and helpful. So far the first and best Turkish food I have had and what a great introduction. Thank you !

It has a balcony out front with seating for a dozen or so people, and as it was pleasantly warm I ate out there. In a cocktail sort of mood so started with a Tides of Beirut - Arak, Cointreau, Ginger ale and lemon juice. Very refreshing and the Arak gave it a real licorice kick. Good value at $14. I'm definitely a grazer when it comes to food so rather than ordering a main I opted for two entrees. First up was kibbeh which is one of my favourite Lebanese dishes - delicious little footballs made from minced lamb, cracked wheat and pine nuts served on a bed of rocket with a side of yoghurt. Wrapped up in a piece of pita bread, this makes for great finger food and with three pieces for $12 good value to boot. Next was Zaa'ter calamari, grilled and served on more rocket with fresh pomegranate. This was quite good but nothing out of the ordinary. I was hoping for something a little spicier. Generous serve for an entree and I wasn't able to finish it all. Overall, good value for money, good location and the lady who served me was attentive and friendly. Worth a five minute detour from Chapel Street if you're in the mood for Middle Eastern cuisine.

As of this month, my prayers were answered in the form of Zurouna, the newest Middle Eastern addition to South Yarra. In a word, Zurouna is sensational. It is authentic, diverse (representing Levantine but also North African cuisine as well), elegantly but accessibly fitted out with Middle Eastern lamps and mosaic patterns, and accented with really lovely staff. A rundown of what we ate: Moutabbal - smooth, smoky eggplant dip perfect for scooping up with the fresh and fried Arabic bread that is constantly replenished. Za'atar calamari - coils of tender, za'atar-sprinkled grilled squid, with rocket, simple lemon and olive oil dressing, and fresh pomegranate seeds. Perfectly cooked, not a hint of chewiness. Ma'anek - lean Lebanese-style lamb sausages with olive oil and parsley. Not greasy, gristly or gamey at all, just how they should be. Lamb shank with freekeh and yogurt - there was no shank that day, so we had shoulder instead which was sensational. Exceptionally tender lamb with nutty toasted freekeh (green wheat) and garlic yogurt. Middle Eastern home cooking at its best. Chermoula prawns - four chargrilled king prawns, marinated in North African chermoula (a beautiful garlic, coriander, parsley and cumin sauce) topping an equally aromatic cous cous salad. Chicken tagine - tender chicken breast simmered in a spicy harissa tomato sauce with plump olives, chick peas and peppers. Served with almond rice on the side, this was my husband's and sister-in-law's favorite of the night. Baklava, turkish delight and fairy floss, plus mint teas for dessert. They have very authentically added a cinnamon stick to each glass of mint tea, a classic flavor combination of North Africa. Let the mint steep in the pot, then swirl your cinnamon stick around gently for a minute to infuse. Remove and drink. I was NOT expecting this when I saw the "coming soon" sign a few weeks ago. Traditionally this particular property has been filled and abandoned by lackluster restaurants. Zurouna is beautiful and here to stay, the kind of place that makes me so proud of my culinary heritage.
