Even before the first Nicole Bridger store opened in Kitsilano on May 7th, 2011, there had already been much media buzz. Having established herself as an eco-friendly designer who uses renewable resources and ethical manufacturing practices, everyone anticipated how she would translate sustainable fashion into environmental interior design.
The gallery-esque white retail space, painted with non-VOC, all-natural pigments, is punctuated with a natural wooden touch. Floating Douglas Fir shelving units were re-appropriated from an abandoned church on 41st and Oak.
Panels pop out from the main wall, resembling blank canvasses only to be vibrantly filled with Nicole Bridger garments. The brand's slogan, "I AM LOVE," can be seen behind the cash wrap, which is a centerpiece of the store. "Nicole Bridger" is written in white on a black surface on the front facing side of the cash desk. A third of which features a wooden detail, as many of interior designer Kate Cannata's designs incorporate a bit of New York's east coast flare mixed with the warmth of wood. Overhead hangs an eco-resin chandelier made by Vancouver-based Propellor Design, which employs 40% post-consumer recycled materials.
The store stays temperate with radiant floor heating, a system of water pipes that flow beneath the floor allowing heat to radiate upwards, saving nearly 40% in energy costs. Even sustainable lighting, which is difficult in practice, was designed into the store. There are three different layers of backlights track and feature lights that staff can choose to turn on according to the seasons.
And for the clothing itself, the fabrics are rich, luxurious, and mostly natural fibres, such as bamboo. The Nicole Bridger aesthetic is comprised of draping over women's curves. The overall affect being easy yet sophisticated. The looks end up having a graduated West Coast elegance. Be sure to check out the store yourself. read more
