That ambiance is very pleasant along with very nice staff even when they're busy! I honestly don't have anything I can complain about this restaurant. Always quality food!

Unfortunately they put lettuce and tomatoes on it, and I am allergic to tomato's. I called back and just explained the situation, I didn't want to blame anyone just simply stating perhaps I misspoke or it didn't get written down. I was informed several times there's nothing anyone can do, and I'd have to call back tomorrow. I said I am not trying to file a complaint or even get a refund, I'd really just like to pick up a new burrito. She reluctantly agreed. When I arrived, she decided to reprimand me further about my etiquette and how long it took me. The remade burrito itself was 1/3rd the normal size, poorly made with nothing inside. If they make something this simple turn into this big of an ordeal, and then deliberately give me a poorly made burrito, almost 4 inches shorter than the standard I paid for out of spite, what else did they do to it? For obvious reasons, It went right into the trash. I would like to point out as well, after tipping 20%, this burrito was just short of $17. Whether you live here in town, or are just passing through, I would definitely spend your money elsewhere.

The building is not very handicap accessible but there is a rail to hold onto while navigating the 2 steps at the entrance. The building is a beautiful old building which we appreciated. It is a very small place but welcoming, and the smell as you walked in was magnificent. We were welcomed in and directed to the service window. There were menus there to choose from. The choices are pretty standard, but the smells in there made it difficult to narrow it down to one dish. We ordered a chicken quesadilla, a steak chimichanga with rice and beans, we picked our beverages from a cooler near the ordering window and went to sit at one of the few tables to choose from. They brought out a basket of very tasty homemade chips and pico, I asked for hot sauce and was brought 2 bottles red was hot, and green was mild both were delicious. Shortly after, our food was delivered. It looked as wonderful as it tasted. Everything we ordered was very fresh and flavorful. The serving sizes were perfect. The one thing you should know is they are a cash only establishment. We will definitely be back to try something else, the people at the table near us recommended the steak tacos.

I found this local family restaurant and had an excellent experience. I walked in and placed an order for carry out so I could take it back to my hotel. I ordered cheese enchiladas, bean dip, chips and salsa. While I was waiting for my food to be prepared I had a chance to look around the dining area. The interior decor is eclectic. Very unique collection of items on display. Service was super friendly. I could tell the employees genuinely cared about their customers. My food was ready quickly, and everything I had ordered was excellent. The chips were phenomenal, house made, crispy and delicious. Salsa was fresh and tasty. The rice was savory and beans were a good texture and flavorful. Enchiladas were very tasty. The menu is extensive with many unique entrées I will plan to return the next time I'm in the area .

I recognize they are operating in a different environment, especially being over two hours away from the competition found in Chicago. In any case, I found myself hungry in Rock Falls, so I stopped in at La Familia. I had the opportunity to try a carnitas taco, an al pastor taco, and a tamale. I also ordered an horchata to drink. The food was a mixed bag, but with some notable high points. The highlight of the meal was the tamale. The exterior was soft and flavorful, and the interior was appropriately meaty with a good, mild flavor. I believe this was my first experience with a tamale, and it was an enjoyable one at that. For the tacos, I appreciated that the proteins, onion, and cilantro were all in balance and that they didn't skimp on the meat. I am a traditionalist and asked for my tacos with just onion and cilantro, rather than their standard of lettuce, tomato, and cheese. While the meat had a mild flavor and wasn't completely bland, it needed something more to stand on its own. To be fair, there is salsa, lime, and two varieties of El Yucateco hot sauce available. However, being the purist I am, it is my belief that food should be able to stand alone without condiments. That said, with these tacos, it felt like something was lacking--perhaps sauce, crema, or pineapple with the al pastor. I'd also like to call out the complimentary chips and salsa offered at the beginning of the meal. I loved that the salsa was served in a little spouted container and that the tortilla chips were clearly homemade. They were a bit unusual, with layers flaking off (not a bad thing, just not often seen in restaurants). I also liked that they had a little bit of salt... far too many places skip that, and how can you skip the salt? My horchata was an absolute delight with great flavor. It was a tad sweet for my taste, but that's more a matter of personal preference than a technical issue. The service was a major highlight. It was very kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. The staff was also quick and efficient. Final Verdict: La Familia is very solid and respectable as a family-run, home-cooking-style restaurant. While to be 100% honest it doesn't hold a candle to some of the things you might find in downtown Chicago, Pilsen, or Cicero, that isn't the expectation. With this in mind, it does its job well. While I'm not going to come all the way back to Rock Falls just to eat here, when I find myself in town, I can't say I would be totally against it.
