The Niagara River is about 35 miles long, making it a pretty short river actually. It flows North from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Of course along the way it has Niagara Falls. But it also houses the largest fresh water island in the US, perhapsd the world, Grand Island. So the river splits around the island.
The rivers power provides hydroelectric power to the area and far beyond. It was the first river used for this form of power.
Driving along the river is terrific, on both sides. The roads run more or less along the river (most of it anyway) and many areas have pull offs for picnics and the like. Well worth the drive or bike ride where you can.
