The Niagara is a rare example of a classic country diner with a largely original interior, complete with wooden booths, vinyl seating a grand counter. Sadly, I think the owners have given up and simply run the place for the sake of making ends meet. All the shelves behind the counter were stripped bare and there was no menu board which you'd traditionally see behind the counter which presented a rather empty feeling. When I arrived during lunch, the diner was around half full. Lady at the counter tells me the kitchen is closed because of a backlog of orders. I asked how long the wait was, she advised it would be 45 minutes. I was happy to wait so she took my order. I kind of feel like she was attempting to discourage me from ordering because they couldn't be bothered making any more meals. The steak sandwich was actually very decent, I'd rate it a 4/5; fries were average though. This place has huge potential for drivers seeking a unique, original alternative to the boring roadhouses, especially since Gundagai is only a 2 min detour off the highway (look at the huge popularity of the pub in Jugiong). Its a shame the owners of Niagara are so indifferent and put in such minimal effort. read more
