You are missing out big time if you don't take the slight detour to Jugiong from the main highway…read more Food, coffee and jams etc are excellent. Today we had the minestrone, Aussie Turkish and of course coffee. Now, the browsing of jams, sauces, biscuits etc Once the relatives know you are going past Jugiong they expect delicacies brought back so you have to buy double I have subscribed to emails from here over the last few years and they are a good read with recipes.

After reading a few great reviews of this place, I decided to stop in for a lunch pit-stop after…read moreenduring 5hours driving on the Hume Highway boring death roadtrip that is Melbourne to Sydney, and what an absolute pleasure it was! Seeing countless small towns with service station diners and fast food restaurants, Long Track Pantry Cafe is an absolute haven for anyone looking to actually have a nice relaxing time on their roadtrip. The cafe is split into 2 rooms, with a selection of tables & chairs and a long bench seat, as well as tables & chairs outside on the leafy covered front patio. It's an exceptionally cute store, with a very rustic feel to it. Apple & pear shaped decorations, a big branch hanging from the roof, wooden noughts & crosses on the table etc. The menu itself is quite small, with about 7 main lunch dishes (served until 3pm), but you can also get an assortment of toasted focaccias and pastry items up until they close (4pm). Most of the dishes feature one of the homemade jams or chutneys that they also sell in store which are absolutely delicious. The food itself was great, trying to get home before dark we quickly wolfed down one of the toasties, but the bread was lovely and crispy and the salad dressing was great. The whole meal was very filling and very well priced for what you got as well as the peace & quiet of the place (note that we had lunch at 3.30pm - I think it gets very busy during peak hour). The shop also sells a number of country style knick knacks including tea-towels, milk jugs, cushions, books and plenty of other things - absolutely perfect if you need to pick up a last minute gift for mum / grandma. The perfect location & timing for a pitstop if you are driving Sydney to Melbourne (3.5hrs from Syd) or coming back the other way (5hrs from Melb). I definitely suggest you push through if you're getting hungry along Hume Hwy until you reach this place. I certainly had to eat my words after complaining non stop to my road-trip buddy about wanting to stop off and eat at Hungry Jacks in Gundagai :/

Phoenix Cafe - GK's bête noire

Phoenix Cafe

See the photo of the Piazza D'Oro screen outside Phoenix Cafe?…read more I tethered GK, our JRT / Meerkat cross to this thing whilst Keeno and I waited for my chicken kebab and Keeno's orange juice. I had stopped in for a kebab earlier in the week because Tumut Golf Club couldn't feed us and I was about to drop dead from malnutrition. Great kebabs, really great kebabs and the next time I was in town I wanted another one so I could try the chilli sauce version. Proper Lebanese food in Tumut! A bloody miracle. I didn't see anyone using the hookahs in the front window but this is Tumut where the most exciting thing that happens all year is the 'Festival of the Falling Leaf' and the bi annual "Palindromic Towns" competition which Tumut always wins. Anyway GK fixed the lack of entertainment ...and how. Keeno's orange juice is finally brought out and the first thing she does is knocks it onto the ground where of course it virtually explodes in a shower of glass. GK thinks the end of the world has come and takes off. GK can really shift and, with a massive black monster following right behind her (she was towing the sign), she really stepped on the gas but as fast as she went her bête noire kept up with her. Keeno is now terrified she will run onto the road and wails a shriek of unmistakeable blind panic, and gives chase which only serves to spur GK on and bring out all the good Burghers of Tumut, and some of lesser value. So one of the spectators goes to stop GK from her attempt on the dog land speed record and so she runs between two parked cars which has the effect on the sign that a water skier experiences when the boat turns. Its called a whip, and now the sign is traveliing at warp speed straight for our own car. Someone, I didn't see who because I was reluctant to abandon my kebab, stopped her finally and Keeno was literally given an ovation by the townfolk of Tumut. One wiseacre told me that for $50 he would stay schtum about the ding on the car. I had to tell him it was mine. No, he didn't think that was funny...at all...much. Great kebabs, I'd steer clear of the orange juice though.

How this cafe managed to be open a year before I found it is incredible to me…read more Important things first- best coffees in Belconnen, hands down. How do I know this? Well, apart from my own taste, it's not uncommon to see owners of other local coffee shops, whose businesses close on weekends, frequenting chatterbox on Saturdays. The food is excellent and very well priced (surprising given Canberra's overpriced brunch market). Friendly staff who remember your face and order round this out. Bonus- some staff also work at Mingle in the city during the week, and as such if you're a city worker, you can check out Chatterbox on the weekend and your coffee will be known!

Parked in a closish Wilsons, and walked to final destination. First impression was how popular it seemed. Waited in line for just a short time - there is lots of staff & 2 cashiers operating. That was good - hate waiting to order. Plenty of tables available. Used the toilet - clean and comfortable. A good sign. Ordered a fruit toast and a muggaccino. When I returned from the loo my table was set and bottle of water available. Nice touch. Generous portions of a very nice fruit toast with sides of butter & jam also in generous amounts. Coffee very nice. Highly recommend for its friendly staff, it's amenities and of course it's very nice food
