Situated in China Town near to the Gate, it often goes unnoticed sat quietly on the corner. However, Yuet Ben is not like the majority of other Chinese restaurants in the area that stay open til 4am and cater mainly for drunks. Yuet Ben offers gorgeous food at good prices and it is obvious they take pride in everything they do here. The sense of family extends to the customers, even if it's your first time here, and it is somewhere you always mean to go back to but, if you're like me, you keep forgetting. With a fair few celebrity fans as well, this Chinese stands apart from the others and is worth looking into on the odd occasion you might actually want a proper Chinese meal and not a pissed-up beer quencher.

The takeway or eat in restaurant is open 7 days a week, so not much chance on finding them shut, although don't rock up on Sunday lunchtime because you will be very hungry by the time they open at 4.30pm. Mind you I am not sure I would want Chinese for Sunday lunch - nope - roast all the way. Food Express is really nice and clean and for all the times I have been to eat their, it has a great smell coming out of the back kitchen. This really gets your taste buds going! There is a range of seating. For those just wanting to hide away and devour your chinese (or english) meal then you can sit on the breakfast style stools at the left of the restaurant. For those wanting to spread out and sit with friends there are good sized tables to sit around. The food - delicious! As with other chinese restaurants, you can choose from the long list of dishes, banquet menus are also available. If you can't be bothered to go to the restaurant, then don't worry. They deliver for free and if you spend over £15 you get chicken and sweetcorn soup or prawn crackers for free. Delivery starts from 4.30pm though, so don't think you will get your lunch delivered because you won't. Moderate prices also, which just makes everything just fine and dandy.

Going for one though is a rather lazy option in my opinion, just pick and chose your own. There's 17 soups to choose from, 34 appetizers....I know!! 34!!!!! I've eaten at Mei Zhen several times. No single dish has stood out as particularly noteworthy or…read morememorable. Their "spicy" dishes could use a little more excitement, and, for all the apparent variety on the menu, the different noodle dishes I've tried have all tasted more or less the same, albeit with different meat and/or vegetable combinations - as one might expect. The king prawn tempura was greasy and underwhelming; the wonton soup is above average; the hot and sour soup, with its gelatinous texture and distinctly ketchup-like flavor, is best avoided. Beverage-wise, I believe they offer bottled beer, and they brought me coconut milk when I asked (not on the menu). I would be ambivalent about recommending this place were it not for the price. At £5-6 for a sit-down meal, friendly service and good-sized portions, one could do far worse. One potential downside is that this superb value seems to make Mei Zhen popular with the binge-drinking crowd, so those looking for a quiet dinner on a Friday or Saturday night may want to try elsewhere. You can't go wrong for a quick, budget-friendly lunch, however. Recommended.
