Overall it's a good time. But don't expect to have any communication with the people who run this. Worst communication I've ever experienced from any sport organization. We sent emails, texts and phone calls and still never got a response. Don't let that deter you, this was a fun experience for our kid. The coaches and refs were great and the kids were good too. I don't like to give 5 stars very often because I'm afraid people will have authenticity doubts, however, 4 just was not enough for these guys! I have NEVER been a sports mom, in fact, this is the very first sport that I've allowed my son to sign up for, figuring he's 7 now and I can't fight it anymore. However, we've had such a good time, the entire family (and several friends) get so excited every weekend about going to my son's game. And he is beyond proud and having the best time. So now, I'm sports mom crazy! :-) The organization's staff are so nice and helpful, it's a friendly yet professionally run environment. And we've been delighted with the coach/dad who volunteered for our team, which is the same I've heard from other teams as well. I can't say anything bad about this league. It's very organized, the fields is nice, the refs are great in terms of stopping play to explain what happened, the coaches are patient and the kids are having fun! As a parent I worry about some adults taking it too serious and no one is like that here. I also like that it's 6 on 6 so the kids really get learn the basics of the game. In our experience, even in the PeeWee league, coaches are playing to win - better kids get more playing time and touch the ball more, etc. This is fine if your child is a stronger player, but it's disheartening to not even give some kids a chance to touch the ball and have them sit out most of the game at even the younger levels. During one game, my kid's coach and the other coach go into a fight and were yelling and screaming at each other. I am so disappointed and sad that my young child had to witness this type of ugly behavior from adults. Our coach walked off the field mid-game (!) and the kids were left standing there, confused as to what was happening. The other coach was physically restrained by another man - abhorrent behavior at a kids' game. While the commissioner came over, parents never received any further communication, apologies, etc. Also, there was no further information as to how the coaches would be disciplined (which they were not). As a result of this occurrence, this league no longer felt "safe" for us to have our child in. While my child did have fun playing, for this to happen and for us all to witness made us very wary of continuing on in this league. read more

This is an excellent flag football league. My boys have been playing for several years now and they have learned so much and have developed a love for the sport. Coaches' styles and personalities differ from team to team but we were lucky enough to land with a coach that is absolutely perfect for my boys. I also love that girls' participation is encouraged and utilized on many teams. The commissioner runs a very organized and efficient league, and is very kind and helpful. Great learning experience for first time kids trying a new sport and also great experience for kids who have already played but want to improve in football. Everyone involved with this league is positive and friendly and my son loved the cool jerseys they get to wear. They play at a beautiful park in Playa Vista where siblings can enjoy the park area while you get to watch the game at the same time which personally is a big plus when you have multiple children but only 1 set of eyes. NFL FLAG LA is a great league for kids of all ages, ethnicity, and gender. I have a daughter who plays on the teams I coach. She has a blast running around with the other kids tearing the flags off the players, running past them and scoring td's, throwing, and best of all the snacks at the end of the game. It's a great opportunity for kids to learn team chemistry, listening, following rules, and learning what the game of football is all about. Poor coaching, great uniforms. The good part is your child will love the way they look. The bad part, the coaches are screamers or apathetic. Nothing in the middle. There needs to be a coach training program before this is a good value. On one of my sons' teams I witnessed children being dressed down to the point of tears. Yelling at children, blaming them for failing, benching children to teach them a lesson. Someone stop me. On my other son's team, the coach is more often a no show than at practice. When he does show up, he doesn't say hello or sorry to be late, he opens a lawn chair and waits for the kids to find him.... read more

I had some concerns with one of my sons playing in this league; he has some special needs. I brought these concerns up to the coach and commissioner. At first I didn't feel my concerns were being heard. But after the second game, the coach was wonderful! Turns out the coach has taught in other leagues and organizations with kids with special needs. The coach then really helped a lot with my son during the games. You should have seen the smiles on his face every time he was on the field. Turns the commissioner also some experience with kids with special needs. Although, if your child does have special needs then highly recommend speaking with the commissioner. Ask the commissioner who he recommends what team your child should be placed on. Not all coaches have experience with kids with special needs and this is important your child is placed with the correct. Also, some of the teams are very competitive so check with the commissioner if you want to be on one of these teams or another team Just remember, its about the kids and have fun! read more

The league has great competition and its very organized! The only knock is practicing an hour before the games, but that's only bc its so bright and hot at the field! My son has played in this league since it's inception, nearly 6 years ago. The coaches have been great, Tony Son, the commissioner is always there to address issues too. My son looks forward to playing every season. He'll continue until he ages out. If you have a child, boy or girl, expressing interest in team sports, this is a great League to try! read more

There isn't a concept of "balanced" teams. If you happen to be on a good team with a good coach, great; if not, you are stuck with a severely unbalanced team. Players and coaches can stick together through the seasons/years, which gives a (huge) advantage to those teams. Also, the season is very short if you don't make playoffs. Only the top 6 teams make playoffs; so your season will be 7 weeks if you don't make playoffs. When there's 12 teams and you don't even play every team once, it is frustrating that not everyone at least gets a chance at the playoffs (like they have in AYSO soccer, etc.). So 6 out of 12 teams will have a 7 week season and won't make playoffs. I witnessed two coaches going at it with each other at a recent game. The behavior of one coach in particular was appalling - I am so disgusted and sad that my child had to witness this type of behavior. This angry, screaming, yelling coach had to be physically restrained by another man. I felt safety was an issue until he eventually calmed down. (Two coaches of two opposing teams disagreed on a call which led to the disagreement/argument.) The commissioner had to come over. However, parents never received any further communication, apologies, there was no suspension of any coach, etc. I am so disappointed that this happened and that my child had to witness such ugliness; this is supposed to be a fun, safe environment for the kids, and in that particular situation, it was most definitely not. Also, I was extremely disappointed (and shocked) in the lack of response and communication from the commissioner/league to the parents. There was no repercussion that parents were made aware of. Also, I witnessed first hand how kids do NOT get equal playing time at all. Better kids play longer and get more plays. The coach decides who to put in, how long, etc. and there are no rules governing that, which is fine, as long as the league were up front about it - it is NOT about competitive play and learning, in my experience (obviously depending on the coach), it's ALL about winning. I have seen coaches berating and yelling at their own kids/teams. I would equate this to a "club" culture under the guise of a "rec" league. Since the better teams stick together season after season with the same core group of players, of course those teams will be the better ones. As a result, this league doesn't really foster competitive play. Which is fine - just be up front about it. However as I mentioned previously my biggest complaint is seeing such ugliness and absolutely no communication or response from the commissioner/league. My child has played in many sports and different leagues, etc. and not only was the screaming coaches' behavior despicable (at a kids' flag football game for goodness' sake), the lack of any response or communication from the commissioner/league was truly disheartening and disappointing. "Don't come back". Those were the words of NFL Flag LA commissioner Tony Son, to me, the father of a 9-year-old boy in the Junior division of this league: "Don't come back". I didn't berate the refs, and I wasn't that parent who gets out of control during a game. I simply asked the commissioner, Tony, why a pass interference call was made during our playoff game, and I asked what he was going to do to prevent kids from getting injured because of certain rules, and Tony got heated and he told me "Don't come back". Is this what you want to hear from the commissioner of your league? Of course not. Our family has been in this league for 5 consecutive seasons, and this was the first time I spoke with the commissioner. He chose to respond by telling a parent that they can just leave if they don't like it. Is that the kind of league you want to invest your weekends in? Of course not. The league is dominated by the refs. Another Yelper here posted a similar comment regarding the refs trying to make themselves bigger than the game. Several parents I know (not just on our team) have complained that the refs throw flags on any big play. Case in point, in a Pee-Wee division playoff game - not even our division, so I had no rooting interest - a little kid broke away for a long TD run, only to have it called back on a "blocking" call because his teammates were running down the field with him. I saw the whole play, and none of the kids could be considered doing anything but having fun running alongside their teammate celebrating the moment. One of these little kids, probably 6 years old, yelled in anguish as he ran back to the other side of the field. Is this the kind of anguish you want your kids to go through almost every time they make a brilliant play? Of course not. Our team was called for pass interference on a ball thrown high into the air which resulted in an interception. That type of play in the NFL would be a non-call because both players were going for the ball. The last interception of this year's Super Bowl would have been ruled pass interference if these Flag refs were officiating. But this is exactly the type of erroneous call that has been made repeatedly in each of our son's 5 seasons in this league. More importantly, the likelihood of a child getting seriously injured is a real possibility because of the rules and the interpretation by the officials. The strategy of some teams is to not pull flags, but to stand in the way of a runner in hopes of getting a blocking call. Another parent confronted the commissioner about it, only for it to fall on deaf ears. I also asked the commissioner about it, and that's when things got heated and he raised his voice to tell me "Don't come back." If a parent can't ask the commissioner to look into these things, then the parents have no voice in the league. Tony or the NFL Flag LA league will try to paint this review in a negative light, but as commissioner you can't get yourself into an argument with parents. And you certainly can NOT say "Don't come back". Parents and fans will always get passionate and emotionally invested in their teams fortunes. The commissioner should be above that, but clearly it doesn't take much for Tony to get argumentative and tell a parent off. It's unfortunate because the kids and the parents are great. "Don't come back" is Tony's advice. And after 5 seasons, we won't be coming back. I highly suggest that anyone interested in this league to look at this and ask yourself: Is this the kind of league you want to be a part of? read more
