New York University School of Professional Studies - NYU Lobby

New York University School of Professional Studies

    (23 reviews)

    Union Square, Greenwich Village

Note: This review is for the Master's in Professional Writing (MSPW) program. This is a…read morefully-remote (in the sense that the classes are asynchronous) program. Hypothetically, if you're based in NYC, you could take full advantage of all student amenities (library, dining hall, events). Otherwise, this program is ideal for anyone living anywhere around the country (or globe) who wants access to the prestige associated with NYU without the commitment of being in NYC full time. If you are a: working professional looking to pivot fields, advance your career by adding on an impressive degree, or want a challenging yet low-commitment (sans relocation) program, this is for you. The MSPW program focuses on giving young professionals the tools they need to hone their writing skills in a professional setting. This is not for creative writers nor academic writers-- you will be learning how to write from the POV of a business. You may have an inherent 'talent' or 'voice' as a writer, but this program asks you to hone that style to where it both sounds like 'you' and communicates your message the most effectively. From corporate comms to social media writing, grant writing, writing for finance, graphic design for writers, technical writing, and more, this program is a 'choose your own adventure' style; you can specialize in a style of writing or broaden your horizons. The effort you put in is the reward you get out of it. This program allows you to be as much or as little involved as you please; want to join SCRIBE (the writer's society) or any other 'council'? Sure. Apply to special grants, opportunities, or scholarships that allow you to work more closely with professors? Great! Work a low stress job and want to focus all of your time on this program? Amazing. Juggling a million different responsibilities with less time to dedicate? Take it at your pace and expect a supportive faculty. The application process involves an essay and a letter of recommendation. Once you get in, classes are small (~15 people), as each cohort is typically only 30-40 writers. Although it's rarer to meet your classmates, I truly did bond with a few students and liked the small-scale feel of the program. I got along with another student so well that we ended up meeting at graduation and hitting it off (as I knew we would, since we'd been in constant communication for the past 2 years). There were a few classes that I absolutely LOVED and truly changed my life. Style & Rhetoric with Raul Sanchez. It teaches you though intense exercises and valuable feedback how to best communicate in a concise and globally-conscious way, and has made me incredibly nit-picky about my phrasing/word choice/paragraph and sentence structure. This course allowed me to unlock a whole new 'writer's voice' and I can't recommend it enough! Additionally, for anyone looking to work in Comms, Business & Organizational Writing is a must. It teaches you the ins and outs of corporate comms, and introduces you to the world of B-Corps, too. Writing for Digital Media is fantastic for those who want to work in social media/marketing in a writing capacity! You are able to finish the program in 2 years with 3 classes/semester (or some variant of that). I strongly recommend front loading your course load before the final semester, in which you write your thesis. The thesis has to be 40-50 pages long and is due in your final semester. They strongly recommend getting an internship while in the program, which counts towards course credit if you time it correctly. My enrollment in this program and the courses I selected landed me a year+-long internship with Yelp that completely changed the course of my life! That social media job landed me my current Marketing role, effectively "pivoting" my career from Nonprofit Development (do not recommend) to For-Profit Marketing and Comms. With the NYU brand name comes the NYU price tag; while they are generous with loans, the amount I had to pay per semester is truly, utterly ludicrous, especially considering that the program is remote. You're paying for the professors and for the ability to put NYU on your resume, plus an alumni network and job opportunities, but I believe that the program should be discounted given its fully-remote status. Additionally, the graduation ceremony (Convocation) at Radio City Hall was rushed, impersonal, and disorganized; no one shook my hand or handed me a diploma--bleh. However, the faculty (and select professors) are great-- super friendly, organized, and do their best to make this remote program feel like an in-person one. Dr. Rodriguez-Kerr specifically is an amazing mentor! This program was exactly what I needed, and truly changed my life (obscene loans and all). Highly recommend to those interested in comms, marketing, and copywriting!!

After taking a for-credit class, I saw that the education is not rigorous nor is it even thorough. Everything was just googling and self teaching. The professor was not even qualified. The school takes your money and on day one of the class you are unable to withdraw without losing it. The workload is extremely intense and most business professors are not interested in helping the students. There are many technical requirements that are not posted in advance and you are left on your own struggling to figure it all out. I have found that many professors are highly unorganized, unable to spend time helping and don't take the time to learn the course they are teaching or learn English/proper grammar. Currently, I am taking a Statistics class. I just spent 8.5 hours completing the first test had a technical error and failed to count all my answers. Instead of reviewing my test and the answers, my lazy professor's response was "Just take it again." Sure, I have another 8.5 hours to redo this! Thanks for nothing. Also, the technical requirements for this homework are incompatible with my computer's software. I am 6 classes away from graduating and fear this is the end of my road here. Very depressed. Lots of time and money are wasted at SPS. I am beyond disgusted with this institution!

The good: This degree is respected by employers and other educational institutions. This is…read morecritical because many online programs give useless degrees. I have been interviewed by large companies for entry level positions in customer service/business development nobody judged my worth based on the degree. Most of the professors are good. They also have virtual extra curricular activities which allows you to make connections and network. The bad: I did not receive adequate preparation for an actual job in the media industry. I did do a journalism internship, but the school did not focus enough on teaching students to use specific styles of writing. The career center should be more familiar with what types of jobs alumni end up taking. The financial aid department needs to be on top of their game. Suggestions for the school: The curriculum would have been more useful if we had classes on topics such as a 3 credit course on SEO (instead of one week unit within a course) or a 9 credit concentration on web design with at least one or two coding courses instead of a 3 credit course that barely scratches the surface. Spend more time developing an alumni network and make sure career services and financial aid are on top of their game.

I am not surprised to see that there are only a handful of negative responses. I am also not surprised at the generally shared themes contained therein. I WILL say that I know people for whom this service worked (at least for a while), so just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile to others. Hence, not o no-star or 1-star. Additionally, the self-development/personal improvement space is highly varied and there are higher odds that most voices or programs will not work for most people. It's a pretty personal pursuit. Only one has to resonate. Paying thousands of dollars up front, though, is an absurdly high cost of discovery. And then you get hooked into further courses to stay on track. That's not an investment in self- it's a revenue scheme. Anyone not aware of such things would be easy prey. I was gifted access to I guess the Basic/beginner package. Years ago, early 20-teens. I went in open minded and did the thing, participating, sharing, doing the exercises. It was quickly dawning in me that at the time "this just isn't for me." So, I waited (LONGGGG) for a break and dipped to the coat room to get my things and leave. I didn't want anything except to leave and be done with it. They basically weren't having that and tried to prevent me from leaving. First it was the team member who was by the (guarding the) door. Nothing I was saying was registering. It was like talking to a programmed phone menu. "Hey, I'd like my jacket and my bag back do I can leave. That's all." Next thing I know, there are three, then four people in this small room all pressuring me to stay. One dude literally got between me and the door (I'm bigger, faster and probably a lot stronger, so that was a bad idea from any angle.) I laughed at the dude and was like "bro- you're moving and I'm leaving. Or I come back up here with badges in tow. Please get out of my way." This whole scene took about ten minutes to transpire and ended up with me uncomfortably taking the fire stairs (I wasn't getting in any elevator after that fiasco), followed by the door-blocker and some other lil goon as if I needed escorting (also funny- staircases: not good places to follow too closely), then, they locked the office building doors behind me. It was surreal to say the least, comedy enough to remember. Maybe they've improved things, I can't know, but my evening at this place hinted at some super aggressive, cult-like practices that a buyer ought rightly beware of.

I think the program works well for individuals who struggle with motivation, commitment or focus. I also valued the feedback method, where your peers from all walks of life tell you how you are perceived. Downside to the program is that it can easily devolve from your peers providing feedback to direct pressure to take certain actions, some of which may be inadvisable. Examples from my courses include suggesting that some students were using psychiatric meds as a crutch, providing well intentioned but misguided relationship advice and encouraging students to quit their jobs in the name of forward progress but not also considering the secondary impacts. In a nutshell, momentum, but not necessarily of the positive variety.

I emailed back and forth with Customer Service about a half-dozen times. Vincent finally called me. He is very nice. He signed me up for a subscription and sent me a link that actually worked so I could view the lecture. Then he offered me a $12 refund for all my time and trouble. I never got the promised refund. Before issuing the refund to my credit card, he charged me again for the lecture, voiding the transaction. I emailed Customer Service many times and called once before giving up. My advice is not to buy stand-alone lectures, just subscribe, which gives you easy access to all the online presentations. And here's some info for new subscribers on how to use the Search feature at onedayu.com: Video Library, Search Videos. Then enter words you hope will be in the title of the presentation. There is no option for searching for lecturers. I found the rest of Robert Watson's lectures by googling him and finding newspaper stories about in-person presentations he did for One Day U that listed the title of his lecture. I then entered words from the title in the search window. I can't believe this information is not on their website.

My student advisor confirmed in writing (via Slack DMs) that my final two payments would be canceled and not charged. Weeks later I received an email saying they planned to charge me anyway. They also deleted my student account and removed me from their Slack, which blocked me from accessing the very messages that confirm the cancellation. My request for a copy of those DMs was ignored. I immediately sent a formal revocation of payment authorization and notified my bank because these attempted charges could have overdrawn my account by $1,000+. Fullstack cited a "no refunds after 6 weeks" policy, but in my case they are using it as a loophole to demand money after telling me in writing I wouldn't be charged. This has caused significant stress and wasted hours of my time. I've filed complaints with the CFPB and the NY Attorney General. Policies aside, trustworthy schools honor their written commitments and provide students access to their records. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this program. If you're considering it, get everything in writing and be very cautious about autopay authorizations.
