We began working with Sylvan and it was one of the best decisions we made for our family's educational journey. Sylvan provided detailed, ongoing assessments that gave us clear visibility into exactly what skills our child was working on and what was coming next, no guesswork, just steady progress. The program helped them build those essential skills with confidence and consistency. A huge shoutout to Becky and Ana, they are true standouts! Their genuine passion shines through, and personalized approach made all the difference. They truly care about each student's success. We are eternally grateful to the entire team at Sylvan Learning on Slauson for helping our child. If your child needs that extra support, I highly recommend this center, it's made a world of difference for us!

My child was in the world language program 2 1/2 years mandarin and 1/2-year Spanish. They were supposed to give us the option to choose they did not. The mandarin program was not good. My child had three mandarin teacher and 2 of the teachers appeared to not want the kids to learn the language. My child advised me that the Spanish teacher did not assign work only told them to play games during class therefore the half year was a waste of time. I am glad my child is finish and would absolutely not recommend this school the school appears good, and they will sell you at orientation, but it is just a show in my opinion.

Finding Park Century School (we are currently finishing up our first year there) has been one of…read morethe best things to happen to our family. The staff, the teachers - all incredible and everyone is focused on the same goal - our daughter's academic success. She was starting to disengage at her previous school because it simply wasn't set up to meet her needs. Since joining Park Century, she has transformed. She is thriving, happy, and settling into middle school with a confidence we weren't sure we'd ever see. Middle school is a hard transition for any kid, and even harder when you learn differently. Park Century makes it feel manageable -- because they have a plan, decades of experience and a proven method. We are so grateful to have found a community that sees our child for who she is and gives her the tools, on her timeline, for independence and success. We can't recommend Park Century highly enough.

This school is horrible I went there for 2nd through 8th and if it wasn't for family conflict I…read morewould have loved to have left after the 3rd grade after the extra help I needed was reached. The school is called park century and yet no park we were promised a park the entire time I was there and I think to my knowledge they still don't have a park. There where good teachers at points but after Doug Phelps was hired he kind of did away with anything positive and made it into a helicopter parents dream it was ridiculous honestly how fast it got so bad and I had to stick around through all of it so I might just be a little extra angry quite honestly. As well i remember by the science room it would always smell bad and the majority of the school would honestly smell sort of bad which was always strange also the fact I still remember this has got to mean something as I left 6ish years ago. As well I remember the art teacher we had was horrible (Christina) and a bore that was far from insightful on anything and I mean anything artistic she would just show slides then make us make copy's of Mondrian or whatever artist she chose that week. I think this is kind of indicative of how the entire school operates, a lot of saying they encourage hands on learning but then only actually allowing a very small amount of actual hands on learning and having just endless lectures on what felt like nothing. They treated the kids as if left alone we went be able to survive for 30 minutes alone which is just silly and it's just far too much cuddling to actually allow any real experience or learning. Also everything said by other reviewers about allowing the children of wealthier families preferential treatment is entirely true. Also there was a bullying problem but that's a completely different story. Also they where just incredible ridged the entire time and made it feel like you couldn't be a kid or have any natural experience unless it went with their very very strict rules that I imagine cater to some parents with more sway over the schools wishes. At the end of the day just Dont send your children there even though there where some positive it's like so heavily outweighed by the amount of bad like a grain of rice versus the sun on a scale and if your kids are there already pull them out and demand a refund. In short the school is a joke and horrible dont send your children there unless you want to ruin their futures it's a horrible farce of place and there is nothing more to say about it really.

Disclaimer: THAT time of the month! Sappiness ensues…read more I've been caught in a sea of nostalgia these last few weeks. Mostly because I've suddenly been immersed in a literature that uses childhood as a basis for what many call pathology, but what I call strength and resiliency. It got me thinking of my own childhood traumas, loves, hates, and fascinations. Westminster Elem. was witness to my transformation from a nose-picking pre-schooler to a boy crazy 6th grader. I'll never forget any of my teachers from Westminster. While some were definitely *nicer* than others, each contributed to my growth and evolution. Here you go, teachers of Westminster. My Yelp 100th is dedicated to you! Memories: Pre-K: Lizzy - I'll always remember you in your cut off jean shorts, tie-dye shirts and rollerskates. It would be until I reached middle school that I'd realized that you were my pre-k teacher and not a cool teenager who let us do fun "stuff." I'll never forget how excited you were when 4 months into the year; I spoke my first words in class, "my mommy had a baby." You were there on the very first "best day of my life." Kindergarten: Mrs. Brown. Most things are a blur about this grade. I do, however, remember getting accidentally hit in the nose with those metal skates. This would be the inception to my accident-prone life. 1st Grade: "Oh my god, am I really going to be able to count to 100!?!?" Dear Ms. Soo, at that time it seemed as though it would be an insurmountable task. Patiently, you'd sit there with that long stick, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5..." no longer would I finish off with "dog, cat, car, mom, sister, tortilla, 5, 9, fire." You gave me the gift of counting and would you believe that in college, Advanced Statistics was one of my favorite classes?" 2nd Grade: Mrs. Harris! Good lord -- witches are real. I used to wonder why you were so mean. I never peed on myself (in class) or hit other kids in class. You were a skank and you didn't need to be. 3rd Grade: Mrs. Gurtman - You were a wonderful teacher. I remember being really upset when you pulled a handful of us aside and told us that we'd be going to the gifted class the following year. I was upset because I wanted to go with all my other friends. I almost cried, but you assured me I'd be fine. I didn't entirely believe you until I met Dr. Slaton. 4th Grade: Dr. Slaton - another wonderful and caring teacher. You are the epitome of what an educator should be like. My mother still remembers that parent conference where you told her that I was a bright child with a big heart. You took a polaroid picture of us that day. It is one of the only pictures I have from that time. I think you knew this. 5th Grade: While I'd love to call you a 'poor excuse for a human being' I won't. I've carried with me painful memories from my experience in your "accelerated" academic class. It was 5th grade and we didn't *have to* learn logic or calculus. You called those that didn't learn at the capacity you expected, "flunkies," and you'd publicly humiliate them and their test scores. Your class taught me about pain. It was the year of your husband's death, my childhood friend Blanca's death, Magic Johnson's HIV positive test results and the L.A. riots (a death attempt on South Central by its own residents). As much as I'd love to hate you for berating young children, who really just wanted to be children, I'll only feel sorry for you. Childhood traumas work in mysterious ways. I'm entering an exceptionally empathetic professional field, most of my undergraduate research was on HIV, and I have committed myself to bringing out and showcasing the impeccable capacities for strength and resiliency of South Central residents. 6th Grade: Ms. W. & Dr. Asuquo - genuine laughs and smiles were had in your classes. Not only would I re-learn sex ed through you, but I'd giggle in excitement when I'd catch a glimpse of my *boyfriend*, yet ignore him when he came close. Oh the joys of childhood dating. I'd start wearing training bras, learn how to put a maxi-pad on and say no to drugs and boys. I'd begin to first develop physically, and then emotionally. Mr. Robbins, School counselor - You came into my class one morning and asked us what we'd received for xmas. As I listened to all the nice and expensive gifts everyone had received, I thought about lying about the gifts I'd received. We never celebrated xmas bc of my mom's religion. However, my aunt did give me socks. When I said "socks" you asked me what color. I said they were yellow with white lace. You thought that was the coolest gift ever. I smiled and wore them to school the next day. You have all impacted my life. Sometimes when I try to operationalize success -money, homes and happiness (in that order) find their way into the equation. Tonight, the definition of success is to positively impact ONE individual. The program is organized so that kids learn half the time in English, and half the time in Chinese. This is "double-learning" -- they go through a full elementary school program in both languages. The school also responded amazingly well to the pandemic, with teachers taking the initiative to send daily recorded lessons without skipping a bit before LAUSD even figured out what to do, then nearly a full year of Zoom, and now in-person learning with weekly testing. Kids are happy and learn lots. Can't recommend enough!

I recently enrolled my child in the Mandarin Immersion program at Braddock. Since I did my…read moreresearch, I had high expectations of the program, but surprisingly, Braddock has actually surpassed them. Not only do I feel Braddock MI is taking the best approach to individualized student learning (CGI math, writers workshop, etc), I also *very much* appreciate the progressive, light and flexible approach to homework. They get it. Moreover, the MI program is now also an integrated STEM program. Bonus! Putting the educational quality aside though, the absolute best recommendation I can give is this: we've been to three schools before Braddock (two "well-picked" preschools and one other STEAM elementary). My LO hated going to them all. Hated school. Cried when mommy had to leave. You get the picture. Braddock is legit the very first school that my child actually likes going to. The teachers are GREAT with the kids and actually make them excited to learn and be there (between you and me, I've checked in on the classrooms... shhhhh). LO actually walks into school while waving and smiling at me. You can't ask for more than that... bilingual, STEM, progressive, individualized high-quality learning, and a happy kid who's actually excited to go to school.
