I was a member here on and off for many years. Basically, until I moved home to Sydney permanently this year, this was my go-to place to workout when I was in town.
It's a great independent gym. It has a fantastic local flair, the owner Jeremy, is always smiling and always lovely and takes enormous pride in this establishment. He's always walking around PERSONALLY putting away and re-arranging plates and weights and what not. He really works hard to make this gym the best it can be. I love all his no-nonsense rules posted up around the gym, especially the ones about putting away weights. You should always put away your weights. ALWAYS!!! *wags finger in your face*
Not re-racking your weights is a pet peeve of mine. Ahem.
The only reason I ever stopped coming here was because its very cramped and I realized I would never, ever get back to work on my olympic lifts as long as I was a member here cause theres absolutely nowhere to do them. Even just doing deadlifts, I feel like theres always someone walking RIGHT BEHIND YOU because the space is so cramped. So for me, personally, it wasn't going to work.
HOWEVER, if you love classes, this is your gym. There are a bazillion classes on there all the time.
If you want to go somewhere that is very gay and lesbian friendly, this is also your gym (they have a Newtown Gym float at every mardi gras, fyi).
If you want to go somewhere with a indy vibe where everyone seems to be kind of punk rock, or gay, or gothic or is some combination thereof, and also with a super friendly local, neighbourhoody feel, then this is also your gym.
I miss the magazine rack and the complimentary Saturday Herald!
I also miss all the hot, buff, and tough gay girls that work out here, they're motivating!!! Can we swap them out with all the neanderthal morons at my current gym? That'd be nice. read more
