Georgia was once full of covered bridges, most built between the late 1700 - 1800's. Sadly decay,…read morefloods and even purposeful mutilation have done away with most of these treasures. There are less than 20 remaining in the state, but in 1997 the County of Rockdale boldly decided to add another to the numbers. Probably more popularly known as the Rockdale County Covered Bridge, it spans a full 150 feet over a historic ford where Mill Rock Creek is located. Jack Turner Dam was to be completed in 1998 to form a reservoir by impound the water from neighboring creeks and rivers. Engineers calculated the creek would swell from just a few inches deep to several feet, thus a bridge would be required. Nearby is also an old historic mill house, a general store, the old mill site and a blacksmith shop according to the Rockdale County website. However, the only visible buildings I saw south of the bridge were clearly marked with no trespassing signs. There is a trail on the north side of the bridge that allows for better side view pictures, but vegetation has grown enough to block most of the view except the very center of the span. FINAL THOUGHTS The County spent almost $900,000 completing the wooden bridge and designed it to look similar to other Town & Lattice styled bridges from the 1800's. It took 248 cubic yards of concrete and 31,000 lbs of steel to form the base columns for the bridge. It utilized Georgia wood and labor in hopes of promoting new timber bridge technology. But after 17 short years, I could see some obvious wear on the bridge floor and need of repairs. Still, it's a marvelous structure, even if it's not exactly historic.

There is a strong chance they might have the show or movie on DVD! DeKalb County Public Libraries have now extended their DVD loan period to 3 weeks, same as books, which is much appreciated. I actually came to this Clarkston branch since they had a particular disc that I was looking for; you can check the online catalog to see what's available. The main parking lot is behind the library, and the entrance is to the side. The driveway to the lot is narrow so drive slowly. The building shows its age and it's not the biggest location, but it's still a pleasant library. The restrooms were clean (though there were some empty cigarette packs at the back of the building), and the other patrons were well-behaved. It was easy enough for me to locate the DVD area and find what I needed. The guy at the circulation desk wasn't the friendliest, oh well. Don't forget your mask since they're required. If you are a monster who doesn't like books, periodicals, and multimedia (kidding), you still should stop by the Clarkston Library to admire its enormous stunning hibiscuses! Whoa, gorgeous.

Nice library! I came…read moreto the Dekalb county Public library in Clarkston to study on a Friday afternoon, and this was one of the better libraries i've been to. Nope, it's not as technologically advanced as other locations, but it is clean, there is space for studying and it's actually quiet! If anyone has kept up with my reviews on libraries, my biggest beef has always been someone was loud and disruptive, but on this day, I was relatively undisturbed....outside of the guy next to me who asked me if he could borrow a pen. The library isn't the largest one i've been to, but there's a respectable amount of books and computer stations, both immediately in front of you as you walk in, and to the left of you. The entire right side of the library is the children's area. All the way to the far left there's about 5 cubicles for studying, as well as a few chairs as well. Several Tables are also found while walking to this area. On this day most of the cubicles were empty, so I was able to take a spot in the padded chairs and get to work. One cool thing about the cubicles is they all come with their own individual lamps, for the late night studying ( only mon-wed...they close at 5pm thurs - sat), a nice little touch I haven't seen any other library branch do yet. 30 minutes before the library is to close, they alert you via loud speaker, and continue to do so every 10 minutes until it closes, so you don't have to worry about not being alerted of it's closure. Parking at the library is interesting. There is a parking lot to the left of the library, but the actual "library only" parking is at the rear of the library itself (turn right into the library lot and follow the road around). It's a smallish lot, being able to hold less than 20 cars and likely less than that. Getting in or out of this lot in either direction isn't too tough. I definitely like this library. It's small, not the most technological, but it does what a library should do....keep a quiet atmosphere and for learning. What can I say? I'm a fan!

Unexpected to find this name in this place but here it is. It is in the center of Madison, on the…read moresquare with the county courthouse. It has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Oliver Norvell Hardy, of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy, lived in the Turnell-Butler Hotel which once stood on this corner. He was born in Harlem, Georgia, on January 18, 1892. The family was in Madison by that February, and may have moved here earlier. Mrs. Hardy later opened a hotel in Madison named The Hardy House. Oliver began his education at age six at the Madison Grammar School. Mrs. Hardy and her children left Madison in October 1898. Oliver Hardy died in 1957 and is buried in California where a plaque reads: "His Talent Brought Joy and Laughter To All the World."" Hardy was born Norvell Hardy, taking the name Oliver later to honor his father, a Confederate veteran who died less than a year after Hardy's birth. Though he began formal education in Madison, Hardy was restless and drawn to performance. He attended Georgia Military College and later Young Harris College, but his real passion was music. He studied voice in Atlanta and sang in theaters for modest pay, sometimes skipping lessons to perform. Hardy's entry into film began in Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked as a cabaret singer and at the Lubin Manufacturing Company. He was often cast as a villain in silent shorts, and before teaming with Stan Laurel, he had a prolific solo career, appearing in dozens of films under the name Babe Hardy. Hardy married three times: first to Madelyn Saloshin, then Myrtle Reeves, and finally Virginia Lucille Jones, who remained with him until his death in 1957. He is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California This is marker number 104-1. It was erected in 2002 by The Georgia Historical Society and the City of Madison. I came to the Hairston Crossing Library on a Monday afternoon for studying, and quite honestly, I…read morehadn't been here in more than a decade, but it looks like several renovations have been done since I last stepped in. Computers are available front and center as you walk in, and there are tables for studying, large ones that can seat 4 people at a time. There's also smaller tables that line the walls that seat two people at a time. Each table has its own outlet if you have your devices that need powering, and while I did hear some beeping noises from time to time, it was pretty quiet. An entire section in the rear of the library houses a children's book area with a table for kids. Of course throughout the library are several rows of books and staff were on hand to help anyone who needed it. The parking lot is decently sized, having no problems finding a parking spot. While the parking lot was easy to find a space, it was a bit challenging to find a table. Library computers were all being used at the time of my visit, and every table had at least one person sitting at it, so sometimes you have to share, which is what I did. Smaller library with limited books, but it does the job for me, especially when i'm just trying to study. I'd happily come back.

You can park in the plaza to visit the sign. The Civil War had many battles and skirmishes here in Atlanta. This marker points out some of the local troop movements that took place during that time. The marker reads the same on both sides, "July 19, 1864. When it became apparent that a wide gap existed in Federal troop deployment along Peachtree Cr. between Peachtree Rd. & this, the old Williams Mill Rd., two divs. of Howard's 4th A. C. were sent S. E. from Buckhead to this vicinity to close the gap. Stanley's div. marched via the old Cheshire Bridge Rd., camping at the County Line. Wood's div. followed Stanley the next day. Both columns moving E. on the present LaVista Road turned S. here & crossed S. Fork Peachtree Cr. at Durand's Mill - a shift of troops incident to the Federal advance on Atlanta." Hiding in plain sight, this marker stands on what was once the public square. The obelisk was…read moreunveiled in 1856 and is one of the oldest public memorials in the city and commemorates Benjamin Braswell, a local figure of significance. Benjamin Braswell (ca. 1749-1817) was an early settler, farmer, and philanthropist in Morgan County. He was part of a widespread family network that settled across upper Georgia after the American Revolution. Though little is known about his early life, records show he participated in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery and was living in Franklin County at the time. By 1808, he had purchased land in the newly formed Morgan County, where he established a modest plantation focused on corn, wheat, cattle, and hogs as cotton had not yet taken hold in the region. At his death in 1817, Braswell owned more than a dozen enslaved individuals and was remembered as a quiet, generous neighbor. His most enduring contribution came through his will, which left his estate to Morgan County for the care and education of orphans. This act of generosity led to the creation of the Braswell Fund, a public trust that continues to operate today. His reconstructed grave, along with that of his wife Emily, is located in Braswell Park near the Morgan-Walton county line, protected by a wrought iron fence. Located in the heart of Madison's original 1809 town plan, the monument stands on what was once the public square.
