Melbourne has some of the best examples of art-deco architecture, its easy to forget to look up and appreciate the innovation and beauty of these inter war buildings. Newspaper house is a classic example of the deco style and features an intricate mosaic by one of the leading artisans of the times.
The mosaic is a scene of transport and technology, trains, ships, cars etc which reflected the periods technological advancements and modernist influence. "I'll put a girdle round about the earth". The mosaics text summarises the periods technological influence and its shrinking of the globe, specifically communication and news.
The buildings facade was designed and built in 1933/34 (if you look closely you can see the date in the mosaic) for the then owners 'Herald and Weekly Times ltd'.
Apologies for going all eccentric art historian, I just think its a cool artistic/historical statement that locals and tourists should understand and enjoy. Next time you're on Collins take a gander. read more
