Last night in the Philippines. Last chance to eat Filipino food prepared by full-time Filipinos. Last chance to blow local currency before hitting foreign shores. Everyone in the area tells me to go to Resorts World Manila, but it all sounds like an overpriced tourist trap, so I do my research and figure out there's this other mall nearby with lots of restaurants in it. One I particularly want to try called Recipes is in the 4th floor of Newport Mall.
Nobody knows this mall exists so asking around won't work. Looking it up on Google Maps took me to the Shrine of St. Therese, and that won't do neither. So here's what you do: walk the direction of Resorts World Manila (henceforth, RWM), and when you get there, go inside. Newport Mall as it turns out is the commercial (read, non-casino) wing of RWM. So skip all the usual Vegas bawdiness and follow the signs until you reach an atrium that reeks of a different flavor of Vegas bawdiness. Very high-end shops of the kind very few purchases happen in (one wonders how they cope with overhead). There is a cinema with four theaters. Most of all there is a really great selection of restaurants (similarly overpriced but, in keeping with the Vegas theme, pretty darn good). read more
