Easy to find, NEA is nestled in a quant neighborhood near the Norman Bird Sanctuary and Peabody's Beach. We were welcomed by the friendly staff and curious pups. The staff made sure we were properly fitted with helmets and stirrups before we headed out for our ride. We always felt safe during our ride to the beach. Our guide kept checking in and providing us with antidotes of the Norman Bird Sanctuary as we rode towards the Peabody's Beach. The beach was serene with its white soft sand. Our guide was very accommodating and allowed me to trot whenever I had the opportunity. The two hours flew by! Would definitely recommend. Yeehaw! read more

Stacy was wonderful! Both my husband and I are in our 70s. Stacy was very caring towards both of us! The horses, the owner chose for us, were amazing. The name of my horse was Sonic and my husband's horse name was Crispin. What was magical about that is, I am a SONIC reiki master teacher and my husband is a shoemaker. Crispin is the patron saint of shoemakers! The ride along the beach on horse was on my bucket list since I was a teenager. My daughter and I just finished our two-hour trail ride with Stacy at Newport Equestrian Academy, and our experience was absolutely amazing! We're New York natives who frequent Newport occasionally to visit my elderly grandmother, and we happened to be in town for Easter weekend. My kids had their hearts set on a beach day, but it was too chilly. I've owned/ridden horses since childhood, and I remembered attending a summer horse camp at Newport Equestrian Academy years ago, so on a whim late Saturday night, I reached out to Suzanne (expecting to get her voicemail). Not only did she take my call, she was happy to accommodate my very last-minute booking request for a trail ride on Easter Sunday. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Stacy, who was extremely knowledgeable and patient with my seven year old daughter, who has very little horse experience. We were introduced to our horses in the indoor ring, and warmed up a bit before heading out. The 2 hour ride began with a 10 minute trek down a pictureseque road, lined with stonewalls and spring blooms. We then toured 3 different beachfronts, walking right along the water, surrounded by breathtaking ocean views. Stacy made sure to take several photos of my daughter and myself on our horses, too! At one point while we were on the road, Stacy's horse had a minor spook, but she handled it perfectly -- and to my relief, my daughter's horse remained completely unfazed. As a mother and someone who has grown up around horses, being able to trust that my daughter was safe on a truly "bulletproof" horse was extremely important to me. We rode on a very windy day, and encountered lots of things that I know would have triggered my own horses, lol (flapping flags, running/barking dogs, plastic bags, loud vehicles, scary shadows etc.) but our horses were absolute pros. I felt completely relaxed and safe the entire ride. Once we returned to the barn, Stacy went above and beyond, introducing us to all of the horses by name, and even let us feed them some treats. The next group of riders had arrived, and although she was busy working/tacking up horses, Stacy never made us feel rushed, and took the time to thoughtfully answer all of my daughter's millions of questions :) I'm so grateful for the memories we made today, and I highly recommend Newport Equestrian Academy! We had a nice ride on Friday morning. I am a beginner who has ridden maybe 20 times, mostly on trail rides with horses who were old enough to do the ride from memory. I usually like to pretend I'm in control of the horse but secretly am happy the horse doesn't really need me to direct it. My wife has done a lot of English riding with jumps and shows etc. she knows what she is doing. On this day my horse was great, he was tall and had a great brown coloring and was nicely groomed. He was taking direction from me in the riding barn before we headed out. Our guide was really great. She is a young kid finishing high school who wants to work with horses for a career. She was great with the animals and also was very good with the two of us. My impression of the facilities were that the stalls area was good for working on the horses, cleaning them checking their feet etc. Their stalls were large enough and they seemed eager to be eating the chow which had apparently just been put out for them. The riding barn was large and was great for us to mount our horses and get them to take a couple of controlled laps before we headed out. The office area where the humans needed to go to pay for the ride, use the bathroom and sign waivers and agreements needs some attention. I understand the money in these outfits should be invested in the animals but you can also have a member of the crew maybe clean the place once in a while. The entire ride was on the town roads. I am more used to trail rides or on surfaces that are softer than blacktop. By the end of it I could definitely feel the difference. The ride took us close to the beach but not on it. I guess you have to be here for late fall or very early spring rides to actually get on the beach. (October 1 to May 1) we missed this by only a few days. That would have been cool and might be enough of a reason to come back later this year. We were discussing doing a loop that would provide a different view on the way back to the farm once we got out to the furthest point. However, just after we turned around to head back my horse got spooked by a loud noise from a home construction site about 30 feet from the road. He later got spooked again as a truck passed us on the road. For a novice I was proud that I was able to control the horse and calm him down. The guide ended up taking the short route back to the farm because after the first time my horse spooked it was very skittish and was starting to worry about the cars passing by. I think it was a safe call by her to make sure that both riders and animals were ok. The guide was really key to making this a great experience. She was able to calm both horse and rider and never showed any worry or concern. read more

My boyfriend and I recently visited the Newport Equestrian Academy. We took a private two hour tour on a Monday, our overall experience was wonderful. The staff members are welcoming and professional. Our guide, was great, very informative. I've ridden horses multiple times before, but it was my boyfriends first time, the staff is well equipped to handle both, new and experienced riders. The horses are well taken care of. I was disappointed in the ride. When I'm told I'll be going on a "Trail Ride" I think of going thru the woods. Let me begin by noting-- THIS IS NOT A 2 HOUR RIDE ON THE BEACH! The advertisement is extremely deceptive! 80% of the riding is done on the roads; ONLY 20% is on the beach. I went during the off season in April since more of the beach is open for a longer ride along the shore. I should have read the reviews before coming to this place. The cost is $150 PLUS a 20% tip which you HAVE to pay UPFRONT. Totally NOT worth the BRIEF ride on the beach!!! From the barn, you have to ride along the road for about 40 minutes to get to the beach. Cars are flying by, causing the horses to get spooked. I was on the tour with 2 inexperienced riders. One of their horses kept getting spooked-- to the point where the animal almost threw that individual off. Our trail guide witnessed this and uttered under her breath-- "Oh Sh&#T. " The guide wasn't much help for the riders. She merely shouted out commands-- on how the rider should control the horse. There was construction. We had to get off the horses and walk them for a stretch down the road--to keep the animals steady and calm. Bearing that in mind, I feared our beach ride would be cut very short. I expressed my concerns to the trail guide-- who just mumbled under breath-- "We'll work it out." I later found out--that was the guide's way of NOT telling us--we'd be gypped of the full ride initially promised. 10 minutes in--we were turned around to head back. When I inquired--the guide curtly responded--"I go where my boss tells me to go." FYI-- their website DIDN'T mention ANY thing about riding along the ROAD for an hour and a half to get to the shore. I was extremely disappointed. When we returned-I went to find the owner to get a refund. I knocked on her door. A woman poked her head out. I asked if I could speak to her about the ride. She abruptly told me-- she had electricians at her house; didn't have time to talk and slammed the door in my face--saying she'll call me back. I had driven from out-of-state to enjoy what was billed as a great ride. So, I contacted the Rhode Island police department to file a complaint. I was informed--this barn owner is well known to police. Officers have been called to her establishment on numerous occasions for other issues. An officer was dispatched to the premises. The owner of the stables came outside and I explained to her-- the length of the beach ride is falsely advertised. She VEHEMENTLY said-- riding on the beach for 2 hours is NOT possible. And you can only get to the beach by riding along the road. I was NOT informed of any of those details-- when I initially booked the ride by phone. It is CLEARLY ADVERTISED ON THE WEBSITE AS A 2 HOUR BEACH RIDE!! She then tried to insinuate the ride is indeed longer than 20 minutes and lots of people enjoy it. NOT TRUE!!! Just read the REVIEWS on Yelp, Trip Advisor and Google--which I failed to do before booking--a consumer mistake I will NEVER make again! The reviews ECHO what I'm saying here. In the presence of the RI police officer, she gave me a full refund. I suspect that would NOT have been the case--had he not been there. read more

I took my boyfriend on a group horseback ride for his birthday last weekend and was disappointed with the experience. We were very late getting started, not a huge deal, but a little inconvenient since we arrived as early as we were told to. Then once we got started I realized that the lead guide was going to be a teenager and the rest of the guides were preteens. They were sweet kids and I'm sure did their best, but it didn't seem like they had a grasp on how much money myself and the other riders spent on this experience. They were flirting, texting while guiding 2 kids on ponies, taking snapchats, complaining about being there and being tired and hot, yelling at each other when nice cars drove by. At one point the lead guide reprimanded one of the kids for yelling loudly and suddenly while he was next to a child on a horse. I get that they're kids and there is probably very little that can be done to correct/monitor that behavior. Given that, I wished there was an adult with us. Maybe a group ride was the wrong way to go and I should've booked a private ride. But I wonder if I still would've encountered the same problems. It just wasn't the experience I was hoping for. read more

I am having the time of my life learning how to ride at NEA. I bought a groupon for four lessons online and I just finished my second lesson. My first lesson was with Karen and it was amazing! It was my first time ever on a horse and she really helped me get comfortable in the saddle to the point that I was posting the first day! I just had my second lesson with Kami, the owner, and she is awesome! She is such a fun person to chat with and has such a great attitude about teaching. The atmosphere is really laid back and she gives you great encouragement and feedback. I also asked a TON of questions about everything horse and she was so good natured and answered all my questions. There's a little area where you can go and sit and watch others ride too if you want to learn from watching after your lesson. Kami's horses are all beautiful! You can tell she really takes pride in her horses and in her stables. I'm bummed that I'm only up in Newport until the end of this month otherwise I'd be riding at NEA for the rest of my life! read more

Very disappointing experience! The owner Suzanne was pleasant until we arrived for the ride, I was told it would be just the 2 of us as we were both experienced riders. It seems 2 beginners called 2 hours before our ride so she put them in with us and then argued that was not what she told me. She also told me to arrive a few minutes before our 3:30 ride & we didn't end up leaving till 4:10 as the other people were late. The trail (let me be clear, there are no trails, only busy road going to the beach) guide, Stacy was very pleasant and tried to make the ride enjoyable. We paid $180, including 20% tip for a 2 hours ride and ended up back at the barn at 5:30 (1 1/2 hrs) . The grounds were a dump, I've had horse and for safety reasons we would never leave the grounds like Suzanne has her yard. I wouldn't waste your money, especially on someone who doesn't care about customer service. read more

What a great time!!! My wife daughter and I went on the two hour trail/beach ride and it was brilliant the owner and our guide could not have been more professional and courteous. They are very encouraging and patient with a skittish dad and first time 10 year old rider. The horses were incredibly gentle and so well trained for novice riders that I felt like John Wayne by the end of the ride feeling just as cool as a cucumber and my horse Caspian seemed happy to show me around. There is no trail...just a walk on a busy highway with cars whipping by you a foot away. They don't care about their customers. The site they have is a total lie. Called to make reservations in advance, chose a private 2 hour trail ride (recommended) and had an awesome time. My suggestion is to schedule between October and April when horses are allowed on the beach. Part of the ride does include riding on the roads to get to the beach but worth the time spent on the beach! Our trail guide Stacy was great and the horses mild mannered. BEWARE! DANGEROUS! NEGLIGENT! OWNER SUE IS DELUSIONAL, PROFIT FOCUS OVER SAFETY OF HORSES, RIDERS, AND ANY CARS ON THE ROAD! "TRAIL RIDING" SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN! Myself and three other family members (they were aware our skill level was beginners) went for a "Trail Ride", mainly you are on the road. I called the day before which was snowing to confirm if the ride would still be ok or if it would get canceled. Sue assured me it wouldn't affect the ride and we were still on. We arrive and met our trail guide Stacy who was very sweet and got us all ready to go. At the entrance of the property that we had to pass to get to the street was full of ice, not cleaned properly all the horses slipped trying to get out. We made it to the only destination we would be taken to third beach. We turned around on the beach to head back, the lead horse wasn't listening to the trail guide and was giving her a hard time. We make it to the path to head back on the street and back to the barn. Stacy the trail guide has herself and I stop to have the three horses behind us get closer so we can get on the road. Then I hear my mother In-law SCREAMING! I look back and her horse is down on the ground trying to roll on its back and she is trying to get out and not get pinned or kicked but the space was tight! Stacy didn't know what to do, she was yelling and said to me, "she didn't know if she gets off her horse to help IF HER HORSE WOULD STAY THERE!" She got off and checked on her. Now the horse is standing and she said, "Oh this horse likes the snow and wanted to roll in it. Let me help you get back on." Which understandable she didn't want too nor could she physically get back on. She calls the owner to come get my mother in-law and bring someone to ride her horse back. Now all the horse are getting spooked. Stacy doesn't know what to do, saying "I don't want to leave her behind but we need to move the horse out of here." Then tells my mother in-law to walk the horse. She didn't feel comfortable doing that. In the meantime, tells me to go to the street. While I'm going to the street my mother in-laws' horse is pushing her into bushes and she was forced to let go of the reigns and her horse took off running. My horse took off RUNNING AFTER THIS HORSE! I hear Stacy say, " jump off!" JUMP OFF? WHERE?! THERE IS DITCHES ON THE SIDE OF THIS ROAD! WE ARE CHARGING UP THE ROAD AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH I PULL ON THE REIGNS THIS HORSE IS NOT SLOWING DOWN AND IS OUT OF CONTROL! I am now heading towards an intersection with cars at full speed on this horse! MY ONLY OPTION WAS TO JUMP OFF THIS HORSE! The woman who stopped her car to check on me had more concern than the owner! Sue never asked if we were ok! The first thing she said was, " we got the horses they are in the barn; they were just walking they were tired." She and Stacy were upset my mother in-law let go of the horse and Sue said to me, "So you just decided to get off the horse?" REALLY?!!! She down played the whole thing, Said, "they put 7 year old's on the horse that rolled and it's her personal horse sometime they make mistakes too, at least we got pictures at the beach." Which one we did not because the lead horse was acting up, and are you serious?! Yes we understand they are animals but we are also trusting you have enough support on the trail just in case "Mistakes" happen, that your horses are trained and safe to be doing the service you provide. My sister in-law told Sue," I want to get off my horse, I don't feel comfortable, you need to have someone ride this horse back." Which Sue answered, "You can't you need to finish the ride!" Sue drives myself and my mother in-law back drops us off at my car and goes in her house. Didn't make sure my sister and brother in-law get back safely since their horses were spooked too and they wanted to get off and were not allowed to. Didn't care at all what just happened!! My brother in-law asked Stacy to get Sue so he could talk to her. He said to her, "I'm going to be blunt, a refund is in order!" She said, "Um, I can give you $100 back." He was outraged and pointed out all that just happened again! She said, "Um, I can give you half back." She didn't care what happened! Negligent by not having enough support on the ride, not having properly trained horses and ignoring what just happened! Forcing people to stay of spooked horses when they say they want to get off and don't feel comfortable! Trail Guides need more training to handle situations that may occur! Misrepresentation of a trail ride! An owner who has no concern for the wellbeing of her customers! read more

I've been taking ridding lessons at NEA for 7 months now (on recommendation from other horse trainers) and it just keeps getting better. All barns advertise being "drama free" because that is what they hope for. But NEA just IS. They have horses for every age, level and ability and Kammie is and excellent instructor. She builds confidence while offering the constructive criticism you need. She challenges her students while recognizing their comfort levels as well. I've also taken advantage of the trail rides and it's pretty awesome. I recommend the longer of the 2 because there is more beach time but even off beach season Aquidneck Island has awesome trails to offer. I've seen other reviews here talking about skinny horses, etc. I'm there twice a week and the horses are in great shape. You are welcome to come visit! read more

I take lessons here after using a groupon and I fell in love with the kindness and drama free environment Kami and her mom create. I love that the farm isn't high maintenance and the rates are awesome! The horses here are loved and treated really well. After reading some other reviews I think people were expecting a prissier environment! After riding western and working at ranches out west I found this to be just the right fit for me and makes the transition to English riding more comfortable! When riding out to the beach you have to ride on the road to get there but it's worth it! You're on an island with limited options, and Kami makes it as painless as possible!
