Newport Academy, MN IS A SCAM. PLEASE read this to the end ESPECIALLY if your child has special needs! I contacted NA Minnesota because my 16-year-old child on the autism spectrum was struggling with severe depression. My child, who NEVER wants to be away from me (a single mom due to my husband dying), agreed to get help at a residential facility. I was VERY clear that J had autism from the moment I spoke to anyone. I repeated this again and again because he needed intense care where individuals were properly trained to assist my child on the spectrum. I was told although I was making a difficulty decision, it was a good and right one for J. I was interviewed. J was interviewed. My child was accepted. I was told children typically stay from 6-8 weeks and the amount of $4000+ was what I would owe. NA MN graciously offered to help getting my child there by paying the expense of the flights for us to get to Minneapolis and for me to return home. I paid to rent a car from Minneapolis, MN to drive to St. Cloud. During the first meeting I had with the woman who was to be his individual therapist told me she did not have the training to work with children with autism and wouldn't be able to help. I was SHOCKED. The ONLY person who consistently communicated with me was the woman who was the family therapist. At 19 days I was notified my insurance would no longer pay. I was told a meeting with the insurance agency to advocate for a longer stay to assist J was being held the next day. On J's 20th day I was informed insurance would no longer pay and I had to get my child THE NEXT DAY. My brother and I took off work and drove the 20+ hours there and back to get my child. Upon entering the facility, my child was with two staff members who I never meet and seemed to simply have the roles of escort. There was NO ONE who had worked with my child there to assist with the transition of leaving. J was sobbing. My child wanted to stay because my child knew more help was needed. It was HEARTBREAKING. It gets even better though. I received a bill with the amount quoted for the 6-8 week stay. THIS is when I was told the amount owed was for ANY amount of time present there. NO adjustment was made due to the fact my child was only there 20 days. I received no follow-up reports from anyone who worked with my child. No academic, therapeutic or behavioral reports were ever sent to me. I have NO idea what my child learned. I was given no information as to the activities or academics in which my child was involved. I had to rely solely on what my child told me which was very limited due to memory challenges but included this information, "I was the only one in my house that wasn't there because I got in trouble." Six months later, I am being told I owe MORE than the amount that was reflected on the bill I received each month. According to this bill I have been overcharged. This experience offered NOTHING for my child and has (and is) causing me distress financially and emotionally. Again, NEWPORT ACADEMY MN IS A SCAM! read more

My child went there in 2024, I encourage parents to look elsewhere, but I would also make sure your child has a safe word to use no matter where you send them. Practice it with them before sending them, it could impact their lives greatly. Newport employees a pdf file at their St. Cloud facility and without having cameras in the hallways where the singles rooms are, that person was able to get away with what they did to my child. On top of this Newport blocked the investigator to where a search warrant was being discussed. Weeks passed before the scpd could access files, allowing for any corrupt company to alter documents. The safety and innocence of your child is worth continuing to find a safer facility. read more

They were very good. They helped me when I was at my lowest. They worked together to distract me. I awoled a lot, people probably say I was supposed to go there but I did. They truly helped me. Our teenage daughter was a patient at Newport Academy in Spring of 2024. Overall, it was a worthwhile experience for our family. The therapeutic approach helped us to repair ruptures and rebuild our trust and communication patterns. There were definitely ups and downs, and a few things that had to be worked through...but in the end it was a very positive experience and got us all moving in a better direction. Newport provided me with a great experience. I put myself into newport, and got placed in cottage 5 in the adolescent division. I got a lot of help from counselors, and had an amazing RS and Therapist. the four combined taught me new skills, used new forms of therapy, and helped change my mindset. a big part of newport though is putting in the effort. I saw other clients who were forced in and they weren't open to receiving help, which tells me the people who will actually get more help out of this program are the ones willing to be here. I personally loved my time at Newport, but of course reviews will vary per person. read more

I really enjoyed my time at Newport. I was offered plenty of support and therapy options, including speaking with kids my age. My clinical team truely did care about me. Which made my therapy sessions much smoother. I was out before day 80. Food is great, staff are great, care is great. The only thing that could be better is post-discharge. The Alumni program is probably the hightlight of that. After i discharged there was little help from newport with getting me my medication, or even new therapists. Overall, I recomend Newport to struggling teens. read more

Amazing staff, very nice accommodations and facilities. Food is handmade and tastes great. Didn't provide adequate medical care after my group got into a van crash, but other than that the quality of care is awesome. Staff is very understanding and will help you out with whatever you need. With Michigan not having the Residential level of care for teens, having our neighbor Minnesota with this great resource is a gift! I had toured this facility and felt the "Harry Potter Hogwarts Academy" vibe and knew it was a special place that teenagers would love. The staff was passionate about teen mental health and the environment was amazing; the Rock Wall for climbing was impressive, the individual pods for small groups was warm, roomy and comfortable, well designed and fun colors. The food was amazing and the chef quite impressive with her options for the milieu. The school setting was better than the HS I attended! Large classrooms but limited in the number of students per classroom to allow focused individual attention was impressive. All this is great, but then when I put them to the test with a very challenging teen girl, they demonstrated how their "show and tell" was far more. They walk the talk and this family is doing well as they work through their multiple challenges. Newport restores hope where hope was lost. read more
