I was walking around the Mercato shopping center in Naples when I spotted this art gallery. East…read moreWest was founded in 2000 on Fifth by Olga Arkhangelskaya. Olga works alongside her daughter Leeza Arkhangelskaya who joined the business in 2013. According to the East West Fine Art website, they specialize in "contemporary international artists, with a focus on Russian and Eastern European fine art." There is a list of 80 artists on the website along with upcoming gallery events. I was drawn into East West by the art of Annalu who was born in San Donà del Piave, Italy. From the bio on the website, "the major focus of her works is on the theme of water, primeval central element of life. Water is the origin of all things: everything is made of water and everything returns to water, as the Greek philosopher Thales believed. An artist disciple of metamorphosis intent to penetrate the mysteries of creation, capable of assembling incongruent elements such as resins and paper, bark and fiberglass, bitumen and sand, cement and roots, to create new realities, suspended worlds where alchemy is lightness." I am not an art critic so I am not sure what all of that means but I know I like it. Tiny colorful butterflies make up the leaves of trees while other pieces of art are colorful resin circles. Realistically it is all out of my price range but I enjoyed window shopping. If you are in the market to purchase, a Yelp check in can net net you $1,000 off certain pieces of art. I think that is the most money off I ever seen in a Yelp check in. Tucking that away for later. Seriously, these ladies are highly educated and obviously know what they are doing so if you are looking to purchase art in the Naples area, you will want to pay East West a visit.

The husband and wife team who own the gallery have excellent taste and are sensitive to price. Just last week, I took a piece to be matted and framed, and, with her exacting discriminating eye, I was given three choices of matting and framing, each beautiful but varying in price--thus allowing me to make a decision that would not crush my pocketbook. You will be more than pleased if you take your prized artwork to Calusa Gallery.

There are very special local businesses out there that see frequently, but never have a specific…read morereason to visit. For a while, that's what Piccadilly's was for me. I'd head over to Edison's for either a pizza or a beer (or both) and see this shop/gallery, and although I'd always peer through the glass to check out their window displays, I figured it was out of my price range. I mean, the word "gallery" is a pretty loaded (with dollar signs.) But I must say, on this most recent Sunday evening trip to pick up a pie, we stopped to look at the windows and a lovely young gal offered to reopen the shop and let us take a look around. Such a nice gesture, especially since we had 15 minutes to kill. And what we found was way more reasonable than I thought it would be. There are plenty of cool, locally made knick knacks and gift items, from glasses, magnets and jewelry, to more reasonably priced prints. The art was still a little out of my price range, but nothing was too crazy--honestly. I mean, I'm never going to buy $500+ pieces of art, not because I don't appreciate and love it, but because I could pay off a bill for that. But I really do think there is something for everyone here. Although we were just there for a 15 minute visit, we managed to buy two, awesome Cleveland pint glasses, a sweet magnet and a gorgeous sunrise photo of our skyline. Who says you can't do some damage in 15 minutes?

We were treated rudely when my companion was told to throw out a plastic glass of WATER he had been given at another gallery with the comment that "we don't appreciate that around here". Meanwhile the owner/manager/etc was drinking his own wine in a corner with what I assume were friends and two dogs were running around free. Total lack of hospitality- we ended up going down to a much friendlier gallery down the street and buying 3 paintings that night. Nice paintings but won't be back due to the toxic atmosphere...
