I have a serious stationary addiction and I absolutely love shopping in Newington Stationers for more writing supplies which I don't need. The shop is located on busy Nicholson Street and is just a short walk away from Edinburgh University and so it is an ideal store for students to pop into to buy their stationary. As well as selling the standard stationary supplies, such as paper, binders, highlighters etc, shoppers can also expect to find art and craft goods, including canvases which are always very cheap - about £1 each. I have always found Newington Stationers to be very well stocked and whatever your stationary need, they will be able to meet it. However, the prices for some of their supplies I have found to be quite steep compared to other stores on the same street selling stationary. Photocopying is also available at a very reasonable price.

Newington Stationers are a very functional shop, selling office supplies with no frills. Stop by if you're seeking to find staples, binders, laminating devices and poly pockets. Come in on the offchance of finding some basic arts and crafts supplies, including stickers and stencils. Give it a bodyswerve if you're searching for that perfectly pretty notebook that you love looking at, but have no intention of ever using. Affordable and has a decent stock of office branded offerings, but as the reviewers have said it may run out of specifics quickly, since it's sparser than a chain stockist. I would recommend heading here before you head to Staples however, because if it's just the little things like Sellotape you need, it's very convenient.

An independent bookshop with everything you may need as far as stationary, notebooks, basic arts and crafts (nothing too specific), glues etc. The staff aren't the friendliest- merely a nod if that to agknoledge your presence, but prices are ok. I actually found an adaptor for my plug here cheaper than than the Bargain Store located a few blocks down. I usually get notebooks from here as they never seem to have the pends I quite like.

Situated in the Southside is this handy wee stationery shop. There aren't enough stationery shops like Newington Stationers. I love stationery! Seriously once for Christmas when I was a child I just asked for stationery. One of the best Christmas' ever. I digress. In fact I am surprised there aren't more stationery shops, especially in studenty areas. Unfortunately this isn't really a student stationers. Despite what others have said, when I ventured in the stock seemed to be lacking. I didn't find a wide selection of all kinds of pens, protractors and quality notebooks. Instead expect more newsagents standard. A few pencil case basics, some standard paper plus some birthday cards and other bits and pieces. Newington Stationers doess offer a handy scanning and printing services. This isn't a bad shop though, as long as you know what to expect you won't be disappointed.

Hello! When did this wee gem spring up?…read more It's not really wee, and it looks new - I'm guessing it's only been on Cockburn Street under a month. Old Town Context is a refreshing, traditional store on Cockburn Street, steering away from the style of the tourist traps on the Royal Mile to offer alternative gift ideas. They have some old English, French and American advert poster art, cards, stationery, gifts, mugs with pin ups on them, clocks made out of recycled glass drinks bottles - a very eclectic and classy selection. Its inspiration is clearly from bygone era's, and I was very impressed with their postcard range. They also have some cracking cards and original prints with cats on them. These cats are wearing kilts and rugby shifrts, quoting Burns and other Scottish poets within the print. It's a very odd idea but entirely up my alley. Overall a very enjoyable shop for the family. It's difficult to walk out of here without buying anything.

In a very different and almost vintage way, it is a souvenir shop. I say that because there were lots of prints, cards, coffee mugs of the city and various British 'things', but they are not the types of souvenirs that you would find in the every single store on the Royal Mile... yeah, you know what I mean. I loved the different prints of the city, my favourite was a very art deco-ish print highlighting the castle in a yellowy-orangish hue against a dark background. They had it as a large print, a card, and a coffee mug. I am now kicking myself that I did not buy it. If you love globes or tin signs, they have loads of them! If you are looking for a different kind of souvenir for someone... or just something for yourself, stop in here because they have some really wonderful items.

Personally I loved their tiny candles in porcelain heart candle holders - five for 2 pounds was a steal! They would be great for birthday parties or for dinner soiree's. All in all, it's a lovely shop with lots of variety, and I'm glad the name of the store enticed me in! What's a store like you doing in a place like this? Glass ornaments, fridge magnets, wall hangings. It's a pretty eclectic range. Gifts on offer here are usually of better taste (as opposed to tatty), a little pricier and probably geared toward middle aged women. Although this is a generalisation and as Marj points out in her review, there is something in here for everyone, making it very pleasant to browse in. They also sell a nice range of arty gift cards. When I was looking around the owner was having a pleasant conversation with a fellow browser who must have been a complete stranger. Her welcoming and friendly attitude was a nice touch. I expect this is the sort of place that goes out of its way to help.

The store is well laid out, making it easy to find what you are looking for which for me is a huge help, seeing as I often get lost in these type of shops, and end up buried under hundreds of little accessories or being attacked by care bears. Most of the items in this store are quite unique and can't be lumped into the one category. I guess I would describe it as urban chic - a little like Urban Outfitters, but much more unusual. I especially love their wacky jewellery that lionizes dogs, or is just plain beautiful, like their plastic heart necklaces. It's also nice to find somewhere in the UK that stocks the Gamma-Go range. There are so many great gift ideas contained in these four walls, and Present stocks the most innovative, creative gifts you could imagine.
