"Smells vaguely of weed and malcontents."…read more Jealous Gallery's second outpost (the other is in Crouch End) took up residence near the intersection of Curtain Road and Great Eastern Street a few months back. Since this time I've been meaning to make a stop in (always looking for new and interesting art) -- and finally this Sunday the stars aligned. Their cheeky "0% off SALE" for January was amusing and I came on the very last day. IN reality some of the prints (framed on the walls) were marked down a bit, but I enjoyed the crash course in marketing as well. Well done, Jealous. The woman sitting behind the computer was not interested in being social but was not impolite (impolite by omission? I'm not sure). She did bid several groups adieu in a nice manner but I did not feel as if I could ask her questions about the art or frames, for fear of disturbing her work. The art itself is quite varied -- in style, price and availability. It's definitely in the style of East London, edgy (see: malcontents), anti-establishment. There's some funny child-like art with funny words. All interesting and nice to poke around. As I've been banned from purchasing anything to hang on the walls for our home without prior written consent from my roommate (husband) -- (Sheesh -- 1 ill-fated art spree at John Lewis and and all goes to hell), so I didn't pick anything up. But I'll definitely take him back. I particularly liked the world map drawings and some of the featured artists. The selection rotates often. Jealous Gallery is also doing screen printing and other services, but it's a great shop to pop your head into to see if something might catch your eye. *some odd trinkets on offer as well.
