Awesome for a wide selection of lunch/dinner options. I also really liked how it's on a quieter street which makes pick ups and drop offs less chaotic. Overall this was an excellent choice for me and I plan on returning next summer when I have my next appt.

If you know me, I love sneakers, hip hop and everything that is the culture! The decor speaks specifically to Philly icons -- Will Smith, Meek Mill, The Roots, Jilly from Philly (Jill Scott), etc. Whoever was the interior decorator did a great job with honoring those icons and the hip hop scene. The staff are welcoming and will bend over backwards to ensure that all of your needs are met (within reason). For example, I needed to print something out in order to be fully prepared for a training I was in town to conduct. When I asked where the nearest kinkos was, Dan, the manager, said don't be silly, I'll print out what you need here! What a life saver. There are co-working spaces like wework and industrious with a lot better amenities and atmosphere but smaller private rooms. I chose the yard in spite of seeing obvious cleanliness issues only because I liked the sun-facing room. I was ready to compromise with the amenities for a better room. I was told that the room was not ready not when I signed the agreement but when I arrived with my stuff. I was given an ETA of 2 weeks but the room was not ready in 3 weeks. Moreover, the 5th floor where my room was situated was very untidy. The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes for the whole 2 weeks and I had to go to a different floor to get cups and cutlery. The bathroom bins are always full of tissues. The office is about a quarter full and I have not seen anyone except 2 other people on my floor, it is not difficult to keep things clean. There is constant machinery noise on the 5th floor and it is a migraine hell if you don't have good noise cancellation headphones. I asked if a standing desk was available and I was given a faulty one with a slanting keyboard counter with missing screws, I raised this and the community manager just checked, fiddled with the counter and never got back to fixing it. I consider myself a low-maintenance person but my experience in the first 2 weeks was of shockingly very low quality while I was paying upwards of 1000 dollars per month. The "head of experience" was looped in my exit email in which he was supposed to gather feedback and see if I could change my decision, he never reached out of course! This office is less than a quarter full and I know at least 10 people who are looking for a good co-working space, the yard can do a lot better business if they get their shit together!

There's an open co-working space in the middle, and then offices of various member companies around the perimeter. They use a lot of cool techniques for separating spaces but making it feel large -- glass walls, hanging ivy for walls, etc. All the basics were well covered too -- internet was fast, the coffee and tea was free, and there as a fridge, two bathrooms stocked with some amenities, etc. Definitely will be back next time we visit Philly.

The Red Owl Tavern and the Stratus Lounge were very lively and great spots to hang out at. They do offer valet parking for a daily fee which we did utilize. Arrival: Late in the evening. It was quite rainy and windy out. No valet help was offered. Front servicemen/doormen just stood and watched as we exited Uber and struggled to enter front door in the rain with our bags in tow. (No bellman or offer to assist with bags to the room either.) 2. Had to continually call for service, either new towels or in-room coffee refills. One day, called 3 times over course of the day and they just never performed-never even cleaned the room; 3. A $9 charge per water bottle in room? For Kimpton members? 4. Upon exiting our room one morning, a friendly house cleaner asked when we would be returning and whether we would like cleaning service. He then relayed this info to another house cleaner (perhaps his superior) who was unprofessionally lounging with her phone on a bed in a room adjacent to ours. She immediately began to loudly upbraid him right in front of us. The poor man responded and she escalated her tone and upbraiding of him. The two proceeded to loudly argue as we moved down the hallway; 5. The damage and the final straw: Here was the most unprofessional and consequential aspect of our stay! I have type 1 diabetes and travel with a cooler pack for insulin that requires refrigeration (or it spoils and becomes ineffective). In more than over 40 hotel stays (over the course of many years and in many different countries) I have NEVER been denied the ability to put my ice pack (for refreezing) in the hotel kitchen or bar freezer. (The cooler pack needs refreezing for the travel days, while my medicine stays cool in the room refrigerator during our stay.) The guest reception worker flatly refused without adequate reason or apology. With surprise, I politely explained about my insulin and told her that I had never had this problem before. I very kindly asked to speak with a manager. Perturbed, she sauntered away seeking out another worker. The other worker came out and equally without apology or adequate reason gave me the same flat, uncaring refusal. The result was twofold: My medicine was not refrigerated for the 8 hour+ travel period home--likely now spoiled. And, I had to throw away my unfrozen cold pack at the airport (because it was a liquid not frozen.) All this for being a "valued" Kimpton member? No, thank you; not for this price and unprofessional lack of service.

It is kind of hard to rate a place like the Mellon Center, as it is pretty much just a building…read morewith a few shops in it, but hey, five stars, why not? After all, the building is rather convenient to pass through when it is raining, or if you feel like chilling out in a not often used, clean, indoor public space. Underneath the city of Philadelphia is an extensive network of tunnels, which generally connect modes of transportation, and a lot of the Penn Center buildings (which were once upon a time owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad). The Mellon Center at 18th and Market is one far extreme in this network of tunnels, allowing you to traverse underground to City Hall and beyond, which can be rather convenient in the winter and during a rainstorm. (Note that the connecting concourse to Suburban Station seems to close at about 7pm on weekday evenings and may be closed on weekends). The shops themselves are convenient - there's a gym, a cafe or two, a UPS store - but my favorite part of the building is the public space with tables and chairs that is nice for having lunch or hanging out for a bit while passing through. I'm not sure if there is any specific name for it, but I've heard to it referred to as the "winter garden" or the "arboretum" - but in some ways it resembles a greenhouse, with tons of windows to let light in, and a small fountain in the back. I've met my husband here several times for lunch, and it is a nice, often quiet spot, rarely full.

We also bought breakfast with our room, but we were charged for that as well, so we had to call twice to dispute our bill after we checked out. Frustrating. The bill was corrected although they said we only got one breakfast instead of two.
